There are probably better options at that price point than Newport.

Don't do it ! But if you do at least you're only renting so any negative discoveries will prompt you to run for you life. It's not so easy if you own, just watch your pennies.

Hi all,

I'm thinking of moving into the Newport complex (either the Pacific or another newer building). I've read a lot of posts online about problems with bugs and bad service. Can any of you speak to these concerns?

Thanks!

The Manhattan rate for the Courtyard Marriott (on the West Side) is about $100 - $150 more per night. Manhattan hotels are routinely $500+ per night now. They took a lot out of the market for condo conversion over the last 10 years and so you have a supply problem now.

Re: Where are all the BJ shopping carts coming from?
Home away from home
Home away from home

A couple of weeks ago, my brother was in town with his car delivering a large stack of heavy boxes that I had been storing at my dad's place.

The only legal parking space we could find was way down at the other end of the block.

Then I spotted it right there on the sidewalk -- yes, it was an empty BJ's shopping cart!

With pride, I piled my boxes into it and down the block I went.

It sure made it a lot easier before having to carry the boxes up a few flights of steps.

I figured "When in Rome!"

I did get a few disapproving looks from people who walked past us on their way to work that morning (not to mention an amused reaction from my suburban brother).

Heck, I know it was wrong, but it felt so right!

In answer to 2. I was told it varies not day to day but week to week.

New York Presbyterian is one of the best hospitals in the country. I see Sandra Hall-Ross, and I really like her.

Though no one wants to hear this, you should pick and visit a doctor when you are well, not when you have an emergency. When they know you and your history they have a better shot at giving you great care. Dr Hall-Ross even saw me once when I got my calendar screwed up and went on the wrong day.

Anyway it's a schlep up there - 68th and York, but we live in a place where a short train ride will get us to some of the best medical care in the country.

Re: ox restaurant

Home away from home

Actually, I may have answered 1 of my 3 questions by digging around on the Hudson Restaurant Week site.

I just found this:

3-Course Dinner: $30 (excluding tip, tax & drinks -- menu subject to change)

**First Course: (choose one)**

Ox Tail - Pan Fried Polenta, Shallot Jam & Parsley Emulsion
Blue Hubbard Squash Ravioli - Sage Brown Butter
Bibb Lettuce Salad - Roasted Asian Pears, Dried Cherries, Gorgonzola Dolce & Champagne Vinaigrette

**Second Course: (choose one)**

Braised Rabbit Pappardelle - Pearl Onions, Wild Mushrooms, White Wine & Tarragon Creme Fraiche
Cornmeal Crusted Skate - White Bean Puree, Tuscan Kale & Red Wine Reduction
Grilled Flat Iron Steak - Smoked Cippollini Onion Whipped Potatoes & House Steak Sauce

**Third Course: (choose one)**

Chocolate Terrine - Hazelnut Anglaise & Fresh Raspberries
Meyer Lemon Mousse - Cardamom Tuilles & Blackberry Jam

Sounds fantastic -- I'm guessing this July 28 through August 8 tasting menu is the one that they are currently using?

(Or maybe not, given that GrovePath's post mentions a four-course tasting menu and the Hudson Restaurant Week tasting menu only features three courses?)

Still, any feedback from JCListers about their experiences with the tasting menu would definitely be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the tasting menu tip, GrovePath.

Have any JCListers out there tried the Ox tasting menu yet?

If so, what did you think?

Sounds like a great way to sample the restaurant's fare.

Three questions:

1. Is the tasting menu posted online anywhere? (There is no mention of it on the restaurant's website.)

2. Does the tasting menu vary from day to day?

3. Is the tasting menu a limited-time sorta thing (a la Hudson Restaurant Week) or something that they plan on keeping around for awhile?

Hudson Restaurant Week is just around the corner -- from July 28 through August 8.

It's always a good excuse to go out and dine. :)

Re: Court For JC Speeding Ticket?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Last year, I got a ticket in Newport going 58 in a 25 zone (Washington Blvd. around 11 AM).

A 5 point ticket because it was 30+ MPH over the limit. I told the cop he was right, I was speeding and there was no excuse. All true; I was wrong.

He said he appreciated the honesty, and because my record was clean, he dropped it down to 54 in a 25; 1 less than 30 MPH over the limit and 4 points.

Went to court and took the plea. Paid the $350 in exchange for a drop to only 2 points.

So I went from 5 points to 2. Additionally (and shockingly) my insurance (Geico) has gone down by $50 for each of the 6 month renewals since the ticket.

What you all need to understand is that the prosecuter is not acting in your best interest! He is acting in the courts best interest. How can they make more than $150 on a speeding ticket? Simple...Give the defendants a $350 pardon...does that sound like extortion to you? It does to me. The best thing to do is to take it to court if you can spare the time, it may be possible that the cop doesn't even show up. If you're really smart you will use the method of making the cop prove he/she was trained properly with the radar, when the radr was last cllibrated and serviced and at what time was his/her last summons issued using said Radar. If the Officer can not prove most or all of these the judge will either dismiss or lower the fines and points.

I agree that Dr. Mirza is a good walk-in option for run-of-the-mill illnesses, like if you need a prescription in a hurry or an antibiotic.

It's an odd little office that sure could use a renovation, but the staff is polite and helpful.

The hours rock too!

At last check, they were open 6 days a week (closed Thursdays).

The office opens at 11am (though the doctor doesn't come in until 2pm... not sure how that works).

The doctor is in from 2pm-ish until whenever they decide to close -- which is usually between 7:30 and 8pm.

In the past, it's been a great after-work solution for me when I've been ill, though it's been quite awhile since I've needed to swing by there (knock on wood!).

Here's a link to his Superpages Listing (which includes the languages he speaks, his phone number, his e-mail address and all kinds of other good stuff.)

Good luck and feel better!

El Saraya - JSQ
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

I'd seen this place before and finally made my way over for lunch today. (Vroom, just off of Bergen Ave. Look for the red tent.)

OMG.

Get thee there.

Given all the bumbling and uncertainty that came with ordering food, I started to think that maybe they didn't really serve food at all and that they pretended to in order to secure some other license (they do hookah). :) But once the food came, it was fantastic.

Their falafel puts Ibby's to shame, imho. The hummus was phenomenal. Turkey/Czechoslovakia soccer game on TV outside. And lots of hookah, if that's your thing.

There were some weird moments to be sure, a lot of which can probably be attributed to a (large) language barrier; iced coffee came in the form of a piping hot coffee. No iced tea with mint left, so we were offered peach iced tea...which was Snapple. (I guess I can't really complain since technically, Snapple peach iced tea is what it is, but given the juice menu, I was expecting something homemade.)

Lunch for three came to $30 -- three Snapples, three bottled waters (not ordered, but whatever), a generous side of hummus, a big side of eggplant and garlic (with a HUGE pile of fresh pita), a falafel sandwich, a lamb kebab sandwich and a chicken kebab sandwich. The sandwiches came with a side of assorted pickled vegetables. We certainly could have gotten by much cheaper, but our eyes were bigger than our stomachs.

I'm must psyched to have found a good lunch option near my work.

Anyone else ever been?

Jersey City lotto customer wins $1M

A customer at Grove News, 119 Newark Ave., won $1 million from an instant scratch-off New Jersey Lottery ticket this morning, store manager Arif Patel said.

Patel said a woman started scratching off the $20 ticket for the $1,000,000 Fortune game in the store and her husband started asking questions about the game .

Re: Court For JC Speeding Ticket?

If you really want to fight this, there are several things you can do:

Write the police station and ask them for (this is your right, but give them enough time to honor the request):

1. A photocopy of both sides of the ticket, the cop usually makes notes on the ticket to remind him of that particular stop. You may find something to challenge.

2. Certification that the radar has been tested and calibrated properly.

3. The officer's certification that he was trained/qualified in using the device.

If any of these are not current, the judge has to dismiss the case.
