I think the tables will turn if and when gas prices get higher. Then, a lot of the "edge suburbs" will become ghost towns and eventually get turned into low-income housing by default. People with decent incomes will be paying money under the table to live in housing projects with good access to public transportation.

I would think there must be some value in the metal used on the body of the shopping carts. I'm surprised some industrious folks have started collecting them and selling them to a junk man.

Mount Laurel was a disastrous public policy which fueled suburban sprawl and did little to create genuine low income housing. Often the result of the "builder's remedy" was sprawling McMansions with a small portion of "senior housing," which of course was great for all the suburbanites who now had a place to stick their aging parents.

The government should not be in the business of encouraging unsustainable lifestyles, and encouraging low income housing in suburban and quasi rural suburbs is unsustainable.

Doesn't matter if it is more expensive for people who need affordable housing to live in the burbs. Whole point is that RCA's was a HUGE loophole in the Mt. Laurel decision and allowed the "not in my backyard" mantra when it came to affordable housing. As a result many nj burbs remained or became even more segregrated.

If I need affordable housing and there are laws on the books requiring towns to build units, I should have the choice of whether I want to live in the burbs and pay the extra dough to commute or in a city close to public transportation, etc. The town, any town, should not be able to exclude me simply by deciding not to build affordable units within its borders.

Curious to see how this plays out.

Just wondering if the Whitlock Mills development is finally back on track.

While there has been lots of buzz about what's been going on at The Beacon and Canco Lofts, I haven't seen much on the Whitlock Cordage renovations in awhile.

Has anyone out there heard any news about it recently?

I guess with the teenagers involved and the use of the term student it made me think of a non adult. As far as the teens they could have been age 18. Whether they were students or not doesn't change the situation. In today's world it doesn't make any difference who you are affliated with. Also at that hour being out one should have their guard up........at all times.

A student had a $900 laptop stolen after being assaulted during a street robbery in Jersey City early Sunday morning, police reports said.

The 28-year-old man was walking home near Poplar Street and Kennedy Boulevard at 1:15 a.m., when a couple of teenagers punched him from behind, knocking him down, police said.

Witnesses said the teen robbers jumped into a white getaway car parked nearby.

The Kennedy Boulevard resident was treated at Christ Hospital for a swollen left eye and abrasion to his nose, reports said.

Jersey City gets state grant for 911 response center

Monday, June 30, 2008
By KEN THORBOURNE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Jersey City is $2.2 million closer to its goal of creating a state-of-the-art 911 emergency response center, officials announced last week.

The $2.2 million grant from the New Jersey Office of Telecommunications will be used to buy equipment for the combined police-fire-medical services 911 center the city plans to open at Bishop Street and Cornelison Avenue early next year, officials said.

The equipment, including computer screens, phones, switches and cable lines, will give the city one of the highest levels of integration among its police data base, phones, and closed circuit TV systems in the nation, said Police Officer John Tkaczyk, the department's senior systems administrator.

So, for example, a member of the public who takes a photo of a crime in progress would be able to email the photo to the police, as well as a text message.

Police and other emergency responders would have the photo, the text message, as well as "real-time" closed circuit video and data about the individuals involved or the building where the crime is taking place, Tkaczyk said.

The capacity of the police department to field 911 calls will also leap from the current 8 to 9 positions to a total capacity of 52 positions at the $20 million center, Tkaczyk said.

"Together with the Jersey City Police Department, we are strongly committed to equipping our police officers and emergency services personnel so they can best protect our city and residents," said Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy.

State bigwig: Healy kept city from tax

Monday, June 30, 2008
By KEN THORBOURNE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A state legislative bigwig has credited Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy with getting a huge chunk of Jersey City exempted from a commercial tax that's part of the affordable bill passed last week.

The bill, which takes away the ability of suburban towns to pay other municipalities to pick up their affordable housing obligations, slaps a 2.5 percent tax on commercial development to help raise money to build affordable housing units.

But Healy felt strongly the commercial tax would hinder development in Jersey City. So he phoned the bill's author in the state senate, state Sen. Raymond J. Lesniak, D-Union.

The end result: a half-mile radius of PATH and light rail stations is exempt from the commercial tax, which according to Healy, exempts 40 to 45 percent of Jersey City from the tax.

"He (Healy) was the only one to call me on it and (he) was very persistent in arguing the merits of excluding transit hubs since we passed legislation for using tax credits to encourage development in those areas," Lesniak said. "He made a persuasive argument that made a lot of sense."

Besides Lesniak, Healy thanked Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, State Senate President Richard Codey, and Gov. Jon Corzine for getting the exemption adopted.

"We wanted to make sure there wasn't this huge obstacle to keep commercial investment from flowing into our city," Healy said

Besides Jersey City, Hoboken is the only other Hudson County municipality out of nine in the state that qualifies for the exemption.

Car & Driver for Jersey City School Superintendent Epps

Drivers are among perks for supers
Monday, June 30, 2008

MOUNT LAUREL - School boards in some New Jersey communities, including Jersey City and Union City, still give perks to their superintendents that would make almost any employee envious and any taxpayer mad.

They include picking up $500 worth of health bill co-payments each year for Upper Saddle River superintendent Joyce Snider and giving Long Branch superintendent Joseph M. Ferraina $9,000 per year in a car allowance.

A handful receive cars for their personal use or car expense payments big enough to lease a vehicle.

Jersey City's Charles T. Epps Jr. and Newark's Marion A. Bolden, who retires today, are provided drivers when they are working.

State Education Commissioner Lucille E. Davy said the drivers are justified because it can be so hard to find a parking space in the state's largest cities.

Since word got out in May that Barbara Trzeszkowski, the school superintendent in tiny Keansburg, was retiring with more than $740,000 in special payments on top of her $115,000 per year pension, state education officials and lawmakers have been scrutinizing the contracts of school administrators and proposing benefit curbs.

Most of the superintendents get 20 to 25 vacation days a year and at least a dozen sick days, plus bereavement leave and some personal days.

But Union City's Stanley M. Sanger could get up to $150,000 for unused sick days.

More Jersey City schools' water have lead

Monday, June 30, 2008

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles T. Epps, Jr. and Board President William DeRosa announced Friday that six water sources in several Jersey City public schools tested positive for elevated lead levels.

In total, 142 water sources were tested at Schools 3, 4, 14, 16 and 22 and Middle School 4.

This testing is part of plan to test all the water sources at all the schools after problems were discovered at six schools earlier this year.

To date, the Jersey City Board of Education has received results on 561 sources sampled in 19 schools.

Epps said that sampling in the remaining school buildings has been completed, and he has been advised that all of the test results will be received by mid-July.

In the schools most recently tested, six of the first-draw water samples - those that are taken after the water sources have not been used for at least 8 hours - showed elevated levels of lead in the water.

Just one of the second-draw water samples - those that are taken at the same sampling sources after the water had been allowed to run for a few minutes - showed an elevated level of lead.

In February the Jersey City Board of Education initiated a water "flushing program" in the schools that follows procedures established by the federal Environmental Protection Agency to significantly reduce the amount of lead that may occur as a result of water standing in pipes.

Act of kindness in purse theft

Monday, June 30, 2008

A Good Samaritan turned in a purse he found in Journal Square to the police early yesterday morning, a few hours after it had been stolen from a 32-year-old woman in a street robbery, police reports said.

The victim, who lives on Corbin Avenue, told Jersey City police she had been walking along West Side Avenue near Harrison Avenue Saturday night around 11 p.m., when a man demanded her purse, reports said. He ran after getting the purse, reports said.

Then at 2:30 a.m. yesterday morning a unknown man turned the purse into West District Precinct saying he found it in Journal Square, reports said.

The victim told police personal papers were missing, but $10 in cash was left in the wallet, reports said.

I have a friend moving up here from VA to live with me. It will take some time before he can get his license, registration, and insurance switched over to NJ. PLUS, he's low on cash right now.

My question: how do we deal with parking until he's set up with his car in NJ?

I own my apt so I'll fill out a tenant agreement so he has proof of address.

Anyone been in this situation? Suggestions MORE THAN welcome!

THANK YOU!

I'm sure there is a legal/technical answer but I would assume it has something to do with the fact that VVP is just one city block long and LSP is acres and acres and acres, with a dedicated grilling area. Makes sense to me.
Here?s the legal answer, check out the following on the JC Municipal code.

? 3-95.1. Fire Prevention Code. [Added 12-12-01 by Ord. No. 01-132; amended 7-16-2003 by Ord. No. 03-093]

There wasn't anything on the J.C. website regarding what you can and cannot do in the local parks. Is there a sign posted in the park stating what is not permitted ? I noticed that parks with playgrounds have signs posted with restrictions such as Janet Moore Park located on the south end of Ogden Ave. up in the Heights.

Sorry, open flames of any kind (I will resist) are prohibited in all public parks. You are welcome to have picnics at the table in the southwest corner (with a reasonable guest limit without having to pull a permit) . However, the city does not permit forest fires (e.g. see California at the moment); especially if you are ?Armed and DWI?.
