That's exactly what PCUE is supporting and facilitating. Believe me, the demonstrations are robust! The media attention is critical, but I think equally important is the fact that it is (mostly) the parents and grandparents of the affected children who are speaking up. Grassroots at its best, man. They have absolutely BEEN beating down the doors to get attention. It's starting to pay off -- that's why you're starting to hear about it.

Really, hook up with PCUE's website. They're impressive.

Microtech Computers, 2810 John F Kennedy Blvd, a little ways up from Journal Square. They charge very reasonable rates, work quickly and are nice people. I believe that's the same place JCRegister is referring to.

Asprey House
Home away from home
Home away from home

Walking my dog the other day, I noticed that they've posted a big sign w/ the address for the Asprey House Website. Nice looking building from the outside, and looks like they've completely gutted it and put in an elevator, but the prices seemed a bit high and the layouts not spectacular... Any thoughts by our real estate connoisseurs here on JCList?

The Sign said something like "...from the low 600s to the 1.2s..." So assuming $600k for their smallest unit which is around 1100 sq feet, that works out to a minimum of $545sqft. Sunblossom condos aren't exactly flying off the shelf, Liberty Terrace still hasn't sold out (as far as i know) and Claremont Cove (admittedly an older building) has places for well less than that.

I have to hand it to them though, they did a great job redoing/refacing that building and of course the location is great - corner of Morris & Greene.

Re: Lisbon.

Not sure why there hasn't been a post about Lisbon in over a year, but just thought I would give an update on how things are there:

My wife and I dined at Lisbon's relatively new location (next to York Street Tavern) on Saturday with two other family members and had a great time. The host/owner was super friendly when we came in, and the food was great.

My wife ordered the Paella and had enough left over for another meal a few days later. I had the surf & turf and the Filet was cooked perfectly and the lobster tail was surprisingly large. We also ordered a pitcher of Sangria for the table which only 3 of us were drinking and it was also excellent (it looks like others have mentioned the great sangria in previous posts and that is still the case). Desert was only OK, carrot cake was iffy, but the flan was good.

And 4 entres, 1 pitcher of sangria, 3 deserts, 1 coffee, and the bill was (i think) about $30pp + tip.

Highly recommended, but no longer a BYOB, they have a full bar with 2 TVs (both had the Yankee game on).

I'm not sure when you should have received it, but I would think you would have by now.

If you don't want to go to the parking authority. I run errands in JC and Hoboken, and the JCPA is on my route. I only charge $10, plus the cost of the permit.

Check out my website, and let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Street Sweeping
Home away from home
Home away from home

When I first moved to Downtown JC from Manhattan fours years ago (on June 30!!! ), I found it strange that people parked right after the street sweeper has gone by. I thought that, like Manhattan, you couldn't park it those spaces within that time period. So one day, as the street sweeper and JCPA came by, I asked the JCPA if it was legal to park after the sweeper had gone by, and she said yes.

Every now and then when I haven't been able to tell if the sweeper had come by, I've stopped a JCPA agent, and they would tell me whether or not the sweeper had passed and,if so, indicated that I could legally park there.

I haven't received a ticket for that at all (knock on wood, count my blessings, etc., etc....)

Now the sweper does come by twice a week for either side (M-Th one side, and Tu-Fr the other, with Wed being the no hassle day). Maybe we don't need it twice a week, and it is annoying when I am home, but I rather have it twice a week, than once or not at all. Let's not give something up, because once we give it up, we may not get it back.

parking permit renewal question

hello. my "I" parking permit will expire at the end of this month and the thought of going back to JCPA is making me sweat. they were really awful last year and it took me about 1 1/2 hours to get my permit, a permit the clerk at the desk would not give to me until her supervisor came downstairs and told her to give it to me.

anyway, i read in another thread that someone had gotten their permit renewal form in the mail from JCPA. i'm wondering has anyone else gotten that? how soon before the permit expires should you expect that in the mail?

thanks!!

A few years back up in the Heights they were only sweeping twice a week once per side.

If you read the sign, it simply says "No Parking" the days of the week and a window of 2 hours. It doesn't say why, therefore the Parking Authority would be within their rights to issue tickets, just for being there during that time frame. The reality is that once the street cleaner passes, they will not write tickets for that reason, but they still will write tickets for other infractions, like zone parking, too close to corner, fire hydrant, driveway, etc. But I am sure that if you give the Parking Authority any lip, they would be happy to give you a ticket for parking during those hours, time and time again.

I need my net-card replaced and was wondering if anyone knows of a place that will do this cheaply. The card itself costs about 20 bucks.

I spoke with Staples and they told me it would cost 100 dollars which seems steep to remove and put in the new one.

Any suggestions much appreciated..especially if you have used the services for your own comp.

So it seems now there is a significant difference in price between the two and not a corresponding difference in quality.

I just wished Nha Trang delivered.

I also noticed Saigon Cafe's prices went up the other day when my brother and I picked up some Spring Rolls and Summer Rolls to split as an evening snack.

Then again, food prices seem to be going up everywhere.

It's been awhile since I've ordered the dish, but I've always enjoyed Saigon Cafe's Bun Ga Ca Ri Thai which their menu lists as one of their main course specialties.

It's actually a Thai-inspired chicken and potato dish served with rice vermicelli and a rich, hearty yellow coconut curry soup-like sauce.

That said, it's been ages since I've been to Nha Trang. Between their lower prices and the tempting photos of their food posted in this foodie blog, I think I am going to grab my dinner from there tonight.

Not sure what to order yet... hmm... some Grilled Pork or Grilled Lemongrass Beef with Rice Vermicelli sounds pretty darn good -- YUM!

I've moved into our new unit at GC. The walk to the Grove Street PATH is shorter than from our home on Monmouth Street. The neighborhood is bookended by the two light rail stops, and there is NY Waterway ferry service from Marin Blvd to Pier 11.

The Liberty Harbor neighborhood is pretty well covered as far as public transportation goes.

Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

You're Invited to our Next Community Meeting:

Wednesday July 2nd, 2008 ? 7:45 PM

NOTE LOCATION CHANGE:
1 McWilliams Place ? 2nd Floor auditorium

Meeting Agenda

7:45 - 8:00 Welcome and Neighborhood Updates

Membership information, updates on local development, the Hamilton Park renovation (it's officially OUT TO BID!). An HPNA representative will also brief the neighborhood on recent crime stats and news from the June Captain's Meeting.

8:00 ? 8:15 Tennis in Hamilton Park

Hashim Bennett, a downtown resident, has been appointed as the new director to run small park tennis programs (to include Pershing Field, Country Village, and Audubon Park). He is reaching out to the neighborhood to coordinate efforts in the park, especially with the renovation slated for this fall.

Mr. Bennett started a community tennis association (CTA) with the USTA to help bring more tennis into Jersey City. If you check his website (titantennisonline.net), there's plenty of info on what they do and current programs in the area. He will be looking to hear from residents in what they would like for tennis programs in Hamilton Park.

8:15 ? 8:50 Q&A with MUA regarding Pavonia Avenue Sewer Construction

Representatives from the MUA and Mayo Lynch (the contractor company doing the construction) will address concerns regarding the Pavonia Avenue sewer replacement and its impact to the community. Specifically, they will address concerns regarding parking, traffic, storm water drainage, noise, and dust level, as well as the expected impact on the West Hamilton Place bus route (Bus 126). Many have questions regarding how these impacts will be handled, when the project will be completed, and how the bus will be rerouted, etc., so come hear details and ask any questions on the project yourself.

Two additions to the agenda: the owner of Basic will present the option of having outdoor seating and former Mayor Bret Schundler will be attending to listen to neighborhood concerns and issues.

8:50 ? 9:00 Community Concerns and Comments

9:00 ? 9:30 Neighborhood Social Time, chat with presenters

Maybe this is a new thing with the PA. I've been parking after the sweeper has gone through and never gotten a ticket, even if it was in the designated 2 hour period. (sometimes you can tell they've been through because of the wet tracks going down the side of the street... and sometimes around a car that got a ticket!)

From my understanding ALL schools were tested.
What is happening is because the testing dates were staggered the results are also coming in piecemeal...I was watching jc cable one night and lead testing was the topic at the board meeting and from what i gathered they are going to
release a report once all the data is complete...

I would think it should be a priority that this be COMPLETE PRIOR to the REOPENING of schools in September.

This is important because the policy is students are not allowed to even bring bottled water into the buildings...What are these children to do drink contaminated water...as it will surely be revealed this has been happening as many of the buildings are OLD and the problem stems from lead plumbing pipes and not the water fountains.

7 schools have lead in water

Monday, June 23, 2008

Jersey City public school officials have announced that 13 water outlets at seven schools tested positive for elevated levels of lead even after the water was allowed to run for a while.

Tests were conducted at McNair Academic High School, Ferris High School, Schools 3, 15, 40, and 41.

In February a water "flushing program" to let the water run for a few minutes at each water source in all the schools was initiated after elevated lead levels were found at six elementary schools - Schools 6, 25, 27, 31, 11 and 23.

I know I'm the queen of giant typos, but I think the way the Journal writes up the lead test results is confusing.

Example: this article says tests were conducted at McNair, Ferris, etc.

Does the article mean that water outlets at each of those specific schools tested positive for lead? Or that outlets at one or more of those schools tested positive? I

s it possible, for example, that P.S. 3 and P.S. 15 have all 13 of the outlets that tested positive for lead?

Also:

- How sensitive are the tests? Are the "elevated levels" here very high, or just a little bit high? If a 3-year-year drank about a cup of the water per day, would that actually have a noticeable effect on the child's exposure to lead?

- How elevated are the lead waters compared with the water coming out of our taps, and the water coming out of our Brita filter jugs? Assuming a 3-year-old drank 3 cups of water a day from the worst fountain, would that likely increase the child's overall exposure to lead by 1 percent? 5 percent? 20 percent? 1,000 percent?

- Given that you can go to any hardware store and get lead test kits, and that this is the sort of thing you could have the kids in a science class do, why did it take so long to get these tests done? Who's directly responsible for testing, and why hasn't that person been fired?

- How

I'm having a hard time picturing the LHN geography, but I think there's a fairly easy solution here: have the Little Lady ferry boat stop right by LHN as well as at the foot of Warren Street.

If, say, you live at Portside these days, you could always shell out a little extra money to take the Little Lady to the World Financial Center when you don't feel like walking to the PATH station.

It seems to me that the Little Lady tends to be underutilized. The owners probably would love it if they could get some LHN traffic.

LHN is a casual walk to the Grove PATH station. Like 8 minutes tops. Plus on a nice day, it's a great walk to the Exchange PATH. And what's wrong with having to take the light rail if you don't feel like walking?

As for the neighborhood, it is literally across the street from an already-booming neighborhood called Van Vorst Park, and it borders another booming neighborhood called Paulus Hook.

Okay, so some of the new fancytown elements of LHN might be under construction for a while, but it's incorrect to position it like it's in the boonies or an underdeveloped location.

I have heard similar complaints about the sales people though. Lots of people have been turned off by them, which is a shame.

While I didn't mean to imply that LHN was in the boonies, it is too isolated for my tastes at $500k+ for a 1BR unit.

Many such nights I had to stop for relief, in the form of a glass of Jameson's, at the Light Horse, otherwise I'd have never made it home

I've commuted into Manhattan from the burbs (car to park & ride, bus to Port Authority, subway to office), from the Heights (99s or marshrutka to Port Authority, subway to office), and for the last 9 years from Paulus Hook (PATH to WTC and more recently, PATH to 33rd). I love to bitch about the PATH, but over this time I've become strongly averse to having to rely on more than one form of transportation - in addition to the PATH - to get to and from work. Yeah, probably I'm a bit anal about it but I've spent too much of my life on buses, broken down jitneys, and subway platforms and there are just too many ways to be delayed when you add another link to your commute.

You do realize that just like the VVP area, one could walk from LHN to the Grove PATH in 7 minutes or so? And considering Grove has both PATH lines there is no specific need to use Exchange Place over Grove. (Actually a quick look at Google Maps shows a walk from Grand/Barrow to Grove would be a fair bit shorter than the walk from Essex/Warren to Exchange).

For the record I like PH a lot (and one would probably pay more there for a condo than elsewhere in downtown JC), but I do want to point out that there are other PATH stations in this town other than Exchange Place

I didn't get a ticket but just want to play it safe. Usually in all of J.C. once the sweeper has long passed within the 2 hour period then you can put your car back. But I hear that in some parts of J.C. people are recieving tickets after the sweeper has passed still within the 2 hours. So far it is selective in certain areas.
