- Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

The whale was just following its internal GPS to its ancestral home. Read the account of Hudson's voyage up the river named for him and it tells of whales by the dozen in the river. It's a sign the river is getting cleaner. Let's hope the day never comes when we are amazed at seeing a bird in the sky.

Last news report is that it was safely back to sea.

But not before Team Healy registered the whale to vote.

Lest anyone think otherwise, that whale actually lives in Reservoir #3... so this IS relevant to Jersey City.

Coast Guard comes to rescue of whale underneath the Verrazano Bridge

BY Christina Boyle
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Updated Thursday, April 9th 2009

Resized Image
The Coast Guard came to the rescue of a whale spotted swimming underneath the Verrazano Bridge.

A search is underway for a 20-foot long whale spotted swimming near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Thursday morning.

The humpback was seen in a shipping channel, heading south, and the U.S. Coast Guard has set up a safety zone to protect it from passing boats.

It is believed to be the same whale that nearly beached itself on Rockaway Beach in Queens Wednesday, but then disappeared from view.

"It's free-swimming and does not look like it's in any distress," said Barbara Patton, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard.

"We've set up a safety zone because it is in the commercial shipping lane and we don't want anybody to hit it."

The whale was spotted south of the Verrazano bridge, which runs between Brooklyn and Staten Island, and 14 miles from where it was last seen Wednesday evening.

A team from Long Island's Riverhead Foundation is on its way to the location to examine the animal and find out what, if anything, it needs.

"We want to know more about this animal," said rescue program coordinator Kim Durham, who added the whale may have been feeding when it tried to beach itself.

"The animal was swimming close to shore, but at no point did it seem to be in imminent danger."

"We do have them in our waters, but any large animal that is in the lower New York Bay definitely gets our concern," she added.

A young 13-foot whale died after landing on the shores of a Rockaway beach in February.
