There are one or two trains at rush hour that are super-expresses and only make one or two stops between Newark and Trenton. If you can catch one of those it's a fast trip! Unfortunately the SEPTA trains from Trenton to Philly are only timed out to meet southbound NJT trains, so the trip back can sometimes take twice as long.

MEGABUS DOES NOT LEAVE FROM NEWARK PENN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But Bolt Bus DOES leave from Newark Penn https://www.boltbus.com/wherewetravel.aspx

Bolt and Mega are so much better than the nasty unsafe Chinatown buses. Mega and Bolt have CLEAN bathrooms, WIFI, electrical outlets and drivers who at least try to be friendly. And yes, I have tried all three

The Megabus option from Newark is probably the best if you take time and cost into account. I think it's usually $15 each way.

I've taken the SEPTA/NJ Transit route too and it usually takes 2-2 1/2 hours. It works but as long as the Megabus times work out it's usually faster and more convenient.

The fastest way (by far) is to take Amtrak from Newark Penn to Philly. Even the non-Acela trans make the trip in an hour. You can usually get tickets for $45 each way. So not cheap but I take this when traveling for business.

ride the PATH to newark penn instead of 33rd street and take megabus from there, and in the 30+ minutes it usually takes the bus to get out of the lincoln tunnel, you're already waving at new brunswick from the turnpike. only drawback: there are fewer buses rnning out of newark.

After Megabus are the China Town buses...and i think you would pay around 20-30 dollars total round-trip to Philly.

A few more details on the commuter train route (NJ Transit & Septa)...

Take PATH train to Newark Penn Station, then the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor line to Trenton and then the SEPTA train to the 30th street station. The NJ Transit train can take as long as an hour and 15 minutes, but if you go during evening rush hour on an express train, a few stops get skipped and the trip is less than an hour. SEPTA portion takes about 50 minutes, give or take a few minutes.

While this trip theoretically takes longer than the buses from Manhattan and ends up costing about the same (or maybe even a few dollars more), if there is horrendous traffic on the highways, you could get there faster AND you'll never be hurting for legroom, if that's important to you.

Just to go off on a somewhat related and interesting tangent, I remember reading a story a few years ago about someone who made it all the way from Washington, DC to New York on local public transit (not Amtrak and not the intercity buses). It took over 11 hours, but what really added so many hours to the trip was getting from the northernmost suburbs of Baltimore to Wilmington - something like a 30-mile stretch with absolutely no commuter train service. He had to ride something like three different local bus lines between Perryville, MD and Wilmington, and being local bus lines, they stopped every few minutes. If they could just extend Maryland's MARC train and Philly's SEPTA a few more miles, imagine the possibilities...

I go to Philly 10-12 times a year and almost always take NJ Transit - to Septa. I've gotten stuck in traffic on bolt bus and it has taken 3+ hours to get down there and well that was the last time I did that.

You can also take NJ Transit -> SEPTA. It's a little more expensive than the bus but certainly comfier and more reliably on-time.

Agreed! The Bolt bus is the cheapest, most efficient route. I have done the train thing and it takes just as long, or longer, mostly because of transfers. If you ride the PATH to 33rd St, you can walk over to the Bolt bus (one block away) and grab a bus to Philly for $15, or less. You could also catch the Bolt bus in Newark. The Bolt bus will drop you off right in the heart of downtown.

Take a Bolt Bus out of Manhattan. I believe Philadelphia buses leave from 33rd and 7th.

What's the best/cheapest way to make this trip?

Are there any busses from JC to Philly or would I need to leave from Newark?
