Not a Mets or Sox fan, but definitely anti-Yankee (as anyone who grew up in an AL city other than NY should be....) I did own a Saab Convertible once upon a time though.

Rooting for the Yankees is like pulling for Goldman, Sachs or the government. Yawn. And hey, if the Rastaman can paint the outside corner at 95+ mph, I'll take him on my team!

T-Bird, you sound like a typical Mets fan. Uneducated and going off on a tangent....let the Rasta play for the Mets or Red Sox. Dirty teams....

A. Many laws that typical businesses must obey don't apply to the Yankees (and professional sports teams in general) due to the antitrust exemption they enjoy.

B. The Yankees blow. I fantasize about a team of Keith Hernandezes and Rollie Fingerses crushing the Yankees again and again...

It doesn't matter. Soon, Obama will make all hiring and firing decisions as well as setting salaries. We have only seen the beginning.

If they refuse to allow a Rastafarian major leaguer who needs to keep his beard in order to practice his religion, then yes.

Yet another reason NJ is one of the worst states to do business in.

Well put, my sentiments exactly.

This is not about political correctness but about the laws of this land, which prevent employers from interfering with an individual's practice of his religion unless they can show a reasonable justification for their employment needs. An employer may ask that employees not wear caps as part of a uniform, but they could not prohibit a Jew from wearing a yarmulke or a Sikh from wearing a turban.

Exceptions are allowed in the case of workplace needs. For example, firefighters may need to be clean shaven and prohibited from wearing extraneous headgear for safety reasons. But there was no reason for a ban here except "the company wants it."

Employers in this country have an incredible amount of leeway in how they conduct their business, much more than in other countries. The least we can do is make sure that they don't prohibit someone from working by infringing on their faith.

We will not be an industrious nation as long as the rastafarians get to dictate the work rules. Jah man!

UPS is very corrupt. Just look at who works there as your driving down County Ave in Secaucus. Look whos waiting for the bus or getting off the bus ready for their shift. 90% of them who work (not the drivers) there are all drugged up, coked up, smell like weed or very heavy drinkers. They say they take a drug & piss test but they never make them. If they did, they would have no one to load, unload or sort all these packages to go out. F you UPS & F you OSHA for allowing this to go on in there!!!
As for the Rastafarian, good for you for suing them & winning!!!

Now even the Rastafarian gets to do what he wants. And even he made $10k out of the deal. It seems that rules are made to be broken.

Jersey City Rastafarian shaves $10,000 off UPS

http://www.businessmanagementdaily.co ... 10000-off-UPS/Page1.html#

New Jersey?s complicated laws make it extra dicey for employers. Aggressive attorneys don?t stop with federal laws like FMLA, ADA and FLSA: they use state and local living-wage statutes, rural codes, plus discrimination and other laws to sue employers for sky?s-the-limit damages. This New Jersey-specific newsletter arrives monthly to help sue-proof every aspect of HR. Written in plain English, it?s your insurance policy for staying in step with current interpretations of state and local laws ? and staying out of court. Learn more about HR Specialist: New Jersey Employment Law and the free report you?ll get when you subscribe...

A federal jury in Trenton has awarded $10,000 to a man denied a job at UPS because he refused to shave off his one-inch beard. Roniss Mason of Jersey City claimed shaving violated his Rastafarian religious beliefs and filed a complaint with the EEOC.

Both Title VII and New Jersey?s Law Against Discrimination require employers to reasonably accommodate employees? religious beliefs.

A UPS spokesperson claimed the company has a long-standing policy of accommodating religious beliefs. Clearly, the jury didn?t believe that policy was applied in this case. UPS has vowed to appeal. Perhaps it believes it only lost by a whisker.

Advice: Provide training on religious accommodation to all employees who make hiring, promotion and firing decisions.
EEOC guidance is available at www.eeoc.gov/types/religion.html.
