Re: Bike JC's Third Annual Jersey City Ward Tour, Sun. June 3, 2012
#2
Home away from home
Home away from home

This was my first tour and it was great overall, but I have to agree that it was very poorly organized. There was a good list of rules posted on the website, but you have to assume that these rules were not read by many.

There was plenty of time to explain some things to everyone and instead we just stood around before the start. Because most people did not read the plan, each time we stopped people could not break it through their skull that they are not the only one's riding today and that we do not own Jersey City. People were complaining about JC, and JCPD, and everything else. They don't realize people need to catch up otherwise all of Jersey City will be closed off.

This should have been mentioned at the start of the tour. It would have been even more helpful if they told us apx how long we would wait there. I knew we would stop at Lincoln Park but I did not know for how long. If I knew it would be that long, I would sit down on bench like many others.

There was no official communication system, which isn't necessary, but could be mentioned at the start of the tour. People raised their hands to give a heads up to other riders, but other riders did not know what that meant. What good is a warning if no one understands it. Also notable, as bikers, raising your hand to signal a stop isn't the best idea.

The organizers also planned some stops poorly. They are good stops, but give at least some warning. There are volunteers all over the place, give some heads up. Coming down the hill from JFK or Newark Ave to a full stop creates a lot of close calls. People were going down these hills at full speed.

Also kids were very poorly monitored as they had no concern for anyone else. Not saying they should not ride, but their parent's should watch them or get out. People had to move away from them contantly as they went back and forth, left to right. I also suppose telling people to keep right if possible wouldn't have been the hardest thing in the world.

And I agree with others about the near accidents. It started off great, but then there was only one motorcycle cop in the front and thats all. Once he passed the intersection, cars have no clue what to do. Considering the tour split up more towards the end, someone, not necessary a cop, should have waited at the major crossings.

The signs in Lincoln Park were a problem. But its not really worth it to remove them. What could have helped was warnings about how much space we had. We kept switching from 2 lanes to 1 lane to using both sides of the road. A simple heads up like "merge" from the marshalls could avoid that.

Finally, the streets were closed off for us. In some areas people actually stopped to look at us. If people are cheering for you, smiling at you, looking at you, honking at you, why not react in some way. Smile back, wave, ring your bell. Some people acted like they were riding their bike to work or something.

I think we do. Given, I'm a Republican and I don't expect any Republicans to win in this county any time soon. But its not about a Republican, its about having a challenger to the current practices of the candidates in office, who just happend to be Democrats. If the tables were turned, I would say JC was in need of a Democrat.

While I am not exited about Richardson and Lavarro winning, I am glad that Ahmad and Velazquez are off the council. More so Ahmad. I'm guessing Richardson has made the final push away from team Healy. She's not the worst, but she's still a fool. Really disappointed about Levin not winning.

I found Velazquez's and Ahmad's TV ad laughable. Typical, they can afford it with HCDO backing them. For a municipal election they sure threw a lot of "Democrats" and "millionaires pay their fair share" in the ad. Glad it didn't help them too much.

Is Healy going to put one of those two fools back into Richardson's seat?

I love how people say that. But for some reason status quo is different for different people. Generally status quo means full sweep. But then Fulop backs one current member of the board last year and he is considered as part of the "change" movement. Same thing this year. Changing the status quo by keeping one current member in.

I am not saying the current members are good or bad, but if any other individual (but Fulop) backed current board member(s) people would say "throw the bums out".

This is a permit parking area and probably the jewel of JC for parking fines. Surprisingly people still park there every day. There have been times when I saw 3 parking authority vehicles on the same block here. It's just endless ticketing and booting.

There is a lack of them in Jersey City, not just any particular street. And you may not even want one. They recently put one near my building and its only collected every so often, meanwhile the trash overflows to the ground.

I saw a guy with his young son picking clothes out of the bin on Marin a few weeks ago. Was a bit disappointed because it was out in the open, and he was doing it right in front of his kid.

Anyway, a couple of days ago, as I was picking up someone from Shop Rite, i waited in the car by the bins. These two ladies really got me upset. Since I had nothing better to do then wait I snapped a few shots. I was amazed by the number of people that pull up to give clothes, but disappointed that they give the clothes away to these ladies. Who by the way immediately open up the bags, throw them into a cart and start digging through.

Yea, so then other neighborhoods have to deal with it. Then JC as a whole complains about the crime rate and nothing getting done except for downtown tax perks.

Funny thing you Fulopians don't realize. If he becomes mayor of JC he'll have to fight for all of JC and then the 4 other wards will want the crowds pushed back here.

Please, its not that bad! I've been living in JC for 10 years now and it is so much better today than it was 10 years ago. Downtown JC is an amazing place which seems to be getting better daily. There are more restaurants, bars and new developments appearing on what seems like a monthly basis! I'm sure you have your reasons for giving up but I am pretty excited about the prospects of Jersey City's future!

I believe Mr. Fulop will be the next mayor and we will move forward much quicker.

I think downtown has grown enough. All these buildings and stuff doesn't mean a thing. Your just pushing the "bad crowds" around. Moving them from one area of the city to another. Or if you use your theory of Fulop being mayor, he'll just push everyone out of here and there will be a near crime less city with people from NY. However much crime there is, the people are just as much residents of the city as we are. Getting more people in here is not the solution.

Re: PATH riding question - Folding Bikes

The question is too advanced to have a definitive answer. The port authority does not even publish their bike regulations on their site last I checked. In a case of folded, I think its up to officer discretion (of course assuming you would be checked). But the bike laws are really intended for unfolded bikes (which can take up space for up to 3 people). A folded bike (especially in a bag) is just an item.

JPhurst,

The Governor repeated over and over again that the unions are not about the students. He made that point. His point was not about benefits.

With dues, his point is instead of spending funds on the students, they spend it on lobbyists and negative ads.

Seriously, what a huge deal. This was a one time occurrence and you want to mention it at the council meeting. No offense, but I'm starting to understand why elected officials get tired of constituents requests.

I lived at the same place for over 10 years and every so often have to listen to some annoying noise from that red tower on Columbus & Warren (which I think has something to do with the PATH trains) but I realize thats just where I live.

What if something happened at the station and they needed a generator. Should they stops trains from passing through Grove St. until 7am? Seriously, I think your lucky because you wouldn't be too happy if the PATH train had those vents like NYC where you hear a train going by every few minutes.

Besides, I have a feeling you moved there because of the PATH train.

As far at 95 Columbus. Just thought I should mention. About a week ago there was an electrical fire/explosion as they were doing maintenance. And yes, they had generators for the following Monday.

@hamiltonparkjc: Removing Justice Wallace is never something he hid. When he campaigned he told people who he would support in the court. He told people ahead of time, and people voted for him. Clearly majority don't find it the most pressing issue at the time. We do need to bring some diversy to the court.

Re: "Christie will ... let NJ's already struggling large cities die" Ohh, so our local officials screw up and we blame the incoming governor for taking away something we should not have?

@ianmac47: It wasn't directed at all the media. It was directed at the guy who asked him the question. I could not think of a better answer to such a question.

Whats the difference with those requirements exists, a police officer needs to only take them once, when becoming a cop. After that its donuts and the AC.

I wish they were the only transport system around here. They are faster and take up less space on the road/cause less traffic.

While they may stop wherever they want, they at least do their best to pull over. Unlike the big buses who don't even bother in most parts of the city.

Usually I would not defend a cop just sitting around like that, but I want to view both sides of the story.

* Maybe he wants to make sure that nobody tries to turn that spot into a drug zone or other crime place.
* Maybe he was hired by NJTP for some reason since it is private property. Just like they hire cops to cross business persons to work or be security guards at our supermarkets.
* Maybe he was not comfortable with you being there because if another person with a camera came by and took a picture of BOTH of you, he/she would be convinced the cop is taking a rest with his friend.

Bottom line is, video would be better, and actually asking what he is doing there.

The only reason why I would doubt he is slacking, he could do that at any other block in the city and not be questioned about it or look out of place.
