Re: Choosing a Jersey City High School: A Roadmap for Parents and Students

Not to be a Debbie Downer but our son did not get into any of the top/good public schools and he is an all B and A student. We built the portfolio and dutifully dropped it off at all the schools, took all the tests and followed the application schedules. Had a tutor for about 6 months prior to McNair test. The only kids we know that got into all or any of the schools have always been straight A students.

We were so disappointed when he didn't get in anywhere. (except private schools that are very expensive) He loves school and it seems like a bummer that we live in JC but can't send our son to a good public school just because he is not a straight A or perfect student. He loves school and is well rounded with participation in lots of activities, sports etc.

My rec would be to get tutors starting in 6th grade, Start prepping for McNair test with a tutor a year or more before the test. This is what I would do if I had known the truth.

Looking for Showroom Space or to start or join a Vintage Collective
#4

Quite a regular

Hi there!
So of course there are lots of artist collectives, shared spaces and galleries in JC and one of these could work for me. But I would also like to join together with other vintage sellers to start a collective or group studio / market / shop ....

I sell vintage pinup, rockabilly and cosplay fashion. I am looking to use the space as a showroom to showcase collectable and historic pieces and also as a location to rent out costumes for theatrical performances etc. It is hard for people to rent from a website, they usually want to make an appointment and see your inventory in person.

If anyone knows of a space or others trying to set something up like this, please let me know! I am looking for something cost effective. My previous career was in online marketing and PR, so i will definitely spread the word and plan events for the space.

Thanks for your ideas and thoughts!
Patty

Cajun New Orleans style catering? Local would be great.

Does anyone know of a local caterer that specializes in New Orleans style dishes? There are a lot of Cajun restaurants in Manhattan, a few in Jersey but not many that cater.

I'm open to getting platters from a restaurant or local small JC caterer. Looking for dishes like : Shrimp Creole, Shrimp OR Crawfish Etouffee, Crawfish Macaroni and Cheese, Seafood OR Chicken Andouille Gumbo (sorry if I made you hungry! ;)

Thanks in advance if you know of anyone or place with these offerings.!

Thank you so much everyone for the great recommendations and advice. I found someone to watch her based on group suggestions who has great experience with recuperating dogs. Thanks again!

Oh sorry I forgot to mention that the reason for the care is that she just had an operation. So she is recovering and is otherwise a healthy, lively dog. Thanks

We are going out of town for a family emergency and need a reference for a dog sitter who can provide specialized care.

We need someone who can stay with out dog or take her in. This person will need to remember to give her medication. She is also wearing a cone over her head to keep from scratching. So she needs assistance when eating and drinking.

Maybe a vet tech that also watches dogs, a house / dog sitter who is overly attentive ?

Thanks in advance for any contacts. We leave tomorrow or Thursday so if you know someone please let me know right away.

I picked up the spicy salmon on my way to work today and it was delicious.

Of course I did tell myself, "shoot, I could make these at home", but would I ever and could I ever shape them so cutely? probably not!

I'm super happy to have this new spot in JC and look forward to trying the rest of the rice balls.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced architect who is used to working within the historic district guidelines.

We need plans for a two story deck and an exterior door in downtown JC.

Thanks!

Be on alert, packages being stolen in Hamilton Park.

A package was stolen from my stoop at 7th and Coles. It was left while we were out by the USPS. We walked around the neighborhood hoping the box had been rummaged through and left somewhere but no luck. Anyway if you see an abandoned box with vintage costume jewelry and/or vintage clothing in it let me know! Hopefully this was an isolated incident ....

We went last night and loved it. I can't believe people are saying Park and Sixth burgers are better, no way! Prices were great, make your own burger was perfect for our son. Shake was amazing. Disco fries, delicious! It was really crowded for their first week so maybe they were not ready to be so popular so fast.

I think the OP was referring to City on the Water Day, where my family for one, was surprised to find ferries running all day from LSP to Governor's Island :) it was awesome.

I love this idea! We could operate it like babysitting clubs, where you meet once a month for dogs to play. You get an idea which people and dogs get along. After a few doggie play groups, we aren't strangers anymore! I am leaving my dog at K9dergarten for a second 10 day stay and it is soooo expensive! My dog seems to love it there, and I'm happy with their care, but such an added expense when you have to go away.

"what we should have (if you have trust in JC strangers) is to have a dogsitting club. as a dog owner myself, 1 extra dog for a week makes almost no difference in my daily tasks. saves the other a good fortune and hope that the favor is returned when you need a hand.

maybe i have too much faith and am insane."

Just my 2 cents, my family lived in a cool part of Brooklyn, we were pretty happy there. We had friends who lived here in JC and when we came here we just really fell in love with the area. Our friends said we were crazy and made all sorts of 'Jersey' jokes but we could not be swayed! The area is unhyped, pretty, just the right amount of city mixed with small town. Two thumbs up for JC :) and I would not trade my place here for a place in NYC

Yes I wondered by and was drawn in by the "dog friendly store" sign. Cute stuff and reminds me of hip thrift stores in Brooklyn but with better prices ;)

Yes, 7th and Coles Laundry is open.

Also:

Attention Jersey City Friends: a friend told me that his house and most of Paulus Hook was under water during the storm, people down there need help. He is asking people to meet tomorrow Friday on the steps of City Hall at noon if you NEED help or you CAN help. Please pass this message along. Please share this and post signs around your neighborhoods!

If you know how to post this as a new thread, please do!

Thanks everyone!

I ended up getting Gypsy Grill hummus, it was very good. Of course it couldn't compete with the hummus I used to get in Bay Ridge Brooklyn at the Middle Eastern shops. I guess I got spoiled living there!

Also, I stopped into Ibby's and felt the amount of hummus they were going to sell me for $5 was ridiculous! (again probably spoiled from living in BR)

I can't wait to try Rumi's :)

Hi! I need to bring some hummus to a party this weekend and am not sure which place sells the best tasting, Ibby's, Gypsy Grill or another place I have not thought of?

Opinions?

Thanks!

one more thing, I love this wine store, I hope people keep going there. You can pop in, try great wines, and they are super chatting and fun, not like some other "judgy" wine stores around town that look at you funny if you buy wine and vodka at the same time.
