Paulus Hook - Parking Tickets are back
#91
Home away from home
Home away from home

For those of you who have been enjoying the unofficial Monday/Tuesday only street sweeping in Paulus Hook for the last year or so, it is now apparently over, at least in some parts of the neighborhood. I got a note on my car from the parking authority saying that parking ticket enforcement for street sweeping on Thursday/Friday would resume "effective immediately". The note was very confusing and it appears that it only applies to some parts of some streets, including the part in front of my house (go figure )

After a revaluation, the tax rate will fall tremendously because of the increase in value over the last 22 years of all property in the city. Not all downtown property owners will be hurt by a reval. Anyone that's recently bought a new or refurbished property downtown (ex tax-abated/PILOTed properties) should see their taxes go down. And I think there are a lot of those out there.

So basically, if you live downtown in a non abated property, you're screwed. That's really annoying since I can't even use the services I am paying for (i.e. the horrible school system.)

For the high, and now even higher, tax dollars that I pay I expect three basic services: good schools, safe neighborhoods and well maintained streets. FAIL.

Instead what I pay for is a guy who's full time job is to inspect to make sure that there are two clearly labeled recycling bins in my basement (one for paper and one for glass)

The city really needs to look at all of the expenses (department headcount is the first place to start) and talk through what is fundamental versus not fundamental before raising my taxes to pay for more white collar recycling bin inspectors.

That's a matter of perspective. I'd imagine if I were hiring for that position I would want someone who:

1) has leadership experience
2) understands New Jersey politics
3) is like-minded in terms of my agenda for education
4) has experience in education

Your argument is that he doesn't have tons and tons of experience with #4. I'd argue that it may not be the most important factor for this position. He was the mayor of Jersey City for many years and ran for governor so he clearly meets criteria for #1 and #2. He helped to found a charter school and advocates vouchers, so he meets criteria 3.

Experts don't necessarily make good leaders/managers. The very best computer programmer, does not make the very best manager of computer programmers. In fact, he/she often is a terrible manager. Then again, I have a hiring bias towards leadership and intelligence over experience. I know not everyone agrees with me, but based on my experience some of my best employees didn't look the best on paper.

I'd be willing to bet that Schundler, if he wants to be successful, will surround himself with experts to make up any gap with criteria 4.

There's also the question of municipal runoffs, quite common in JC. Will we then be holding runoff elections right after Thanksgiving? or in early December? How's the turnout for that gonna be. Mayor Healy made that point in an interview on blogcityblog.com (in case you wanna take a listen).

I understand the argument, but I disagree with the conclusion. While not uncommon, I believe that run-offs are still the exception, not the rule, right? For example, if one city council seat requires a run off and suffers due to low runoff turnout in late November/early December, isn't that better than all council seats suffering from low voter turnout by holding the election in May? I also think that plenty of other cities have figured this out and we could leverage their creative ideas for handling run-offs.

Which is nice in theory but doesn't seem to be the practice. The HCD(emocratic)O has dominated the seen for a long time. Healy ran with the backing of Corzine and, allegedly, Obama. Menendez's pawprints are all over everything that happens in Hudson County where, presumably, everything is non-partisan. Let's be honest about how things really are - do we really think a switch to November and partisan elections will result in meaningful change?

Isn't another way to help accomplish the non-partisan goal to get rid of the visual groupings on the ballot? So that people don't just hear and see the one big name in the run up to the election (e.g. the person running for mayor) and then just vote that candidates slate for council members... Of course I'm sure they'd never agree to that..

Not growing up in NJ, I never understood this. Where I was from we almost always had everything on the same November election ballot. It is much more convenient and less confusing!!! Even worse is that only a few thousand people voted in the April Board of Education election. Hopefully future legislation will address that too.

Re: Christie warns cities: You can't look to Trenton for aid

The problem with NJ government is not a lack of money - there is plenty of it. There is a lack of self control and budgeting. If you continue to feed the fat animal it will continue to eat, regardless of whether or not it actually needs the food. While yes it will "hurt" at first, reducing aid seems to me the most likely incentive to get the cities to actually act responsible. Maybe it could even force Jersey City to create...dare I say...a budget...

I really hope Christie can hold out against political pressure, because the cities really need to believe that they aren't going to get the money before they change their ways.

While I don't think you have to give up the concept of cities and townships, there are certainly some things that could be handled at a county level as opposed to a city level. Board of Education is a great example.

I love the museum (and so does my 10 year old son.) There is a good section on health and germs, the animal exhibit is great and so is the technology section. In my opinion (and I don't mean this in a preachy way), if you become engaged with your child and talk about each of the exhibits, they will get a lot out of it. I can see how he would be bored without my guidance and questions through the exhibits, because he wouldn't really read the information and ingest it.

I have to disagree. The majority of my furniture and decorative pieces are from the late 20's early 30's and I didn't even have to have them refurbished. Clothes, hats, purses, and furs have survived, they do need to be treated well, but are generally VERY interesting and elegant when they are. Jewelry, even not made of gold and silver, are around and just need to be cleaned and any stones, etc. replaced. Back in the days when I had a slimmer figure I often wore dresses from the 30's and 40's.

good point - i have all these great pieces just sitting in my closet with only a couple of wears, maybe i should just try more often! the clothes from that period fit me so, so much better than anything i can buy at the store a good vintage store (but is a bit of a drive) is time after time in madison, nj.

Not true. I'd rather there be citizens trained in the use of firearms around in the event I find myself the victim of a violent crime. At least that way, there's chance the crime can be stopped. By the time the police get there, it's always too late.

While I don't have a gun because I have a child and I'm not trained, I certainly don't begrudge anyone who lawfully does.

In terms of efficacy of this initiative, I'd be interested in seeing which portion of illegal guns in JC come from law abiding citizens selling to folks who shouldn't have them versus being completely black market...

Just ask them to take you to WTC path train, they'll know. The trains usually run once every 15 minutes or faster (unless you are traveling after ~7pm on weekends, or after ~11 pm on weekdays.)

If you get on the "Newark" train you can get off on the following JC stops: Exchange Place, Grove Street, Journal Square,

If you get on the "Hoboken" train you can get off on the following JC stops: Exchange Place, Pavonia/Newport

I believe these folks know exactly what they are doing. They know, along with everyone else who has an IQ over 10, that it is wrong to go with an appraisal from a year and a half ago. That is exactly why they tabled it when there were a lot of people at the meeting speaking against it and then decided to bring it to a vote on an off-cycle (Tuesday) meeting before a major holiday.

Really? I know it seems shady on the outside, but I have been to that place a few times on a recommendation from a friend. Granted I'm not a dude, but it really seems legit on the inside (e.g. the walls don't even go all the way to the ceiling).

Bailout of AIG and salary for the new AIG CEO are two different things. I won't argue whether I think bailouts are good or bad, because they have already happened and are a sunk cost.

I will argue that because of the bailout, the government better make darn sure that AIG turns itself around and they should "hire the best" to do it. A $10 million investment to protect your billions of investment in AIG makes sense.

If you look at his record, I think it speaks for itself because MetLife is one of the few that came out looking relatively great even through all of this mess of the last two years.

So that made me think it may be nice to start a chain that lists out resources for those in need in Jersey City if anyone has heard of anything. I'll start by listing one that I have heard of & am hoping others will add..:

Name: Rising Tide Capital
Objective: Offers classes and advice teaching small business owners, or future small business owners, how to run a business.

Re: Only in Jersey City

I got caught in this loop one day (a while back):

Ticket + Boot in same day (no outstanding tickets)

Take cab to go to pay for Boot. Couldn't pay for Boot because they had also given me a ticket

Try to pay for both. Can they do both? Nope. Ticket must be paid online or over phone or at courthouse.

Can I use their computer there to pay online? Nope.

Get cab, go home, pay ticket. Call back, can I pay for the Boot online too? Nope.

Can I pay by phone? nope.

Can I pay the guy when he comes to unboot my car? nope.

Take cab back to pay. And then something screwy with the payment, I can't remember what but something ridiculous like they only took cash or money order but not check or credit card.

Absolutely brilliant that the one thing that should definitely be available online or over the phone, paying for a boot on your car that prevents you from driving to pay, is in person only. Never mind the fact that I was booted on a first offense for street sweeping.
