Re: Prospective new restaurant opening in Hamilton Park

I find it humorous that people were afraid that a wine bar would negatively affect a nearby school. This town is unreal sometimes.

Re: Area between Tunnel and Hoboken

I think it makes sense to develop that area, but will take a heck of a long time for it to not feel isolated. The Hoboken Path station is not far distance-wise, but it's not pedestrian friendly or pretty to walk there. It will be a minimum of several decades before that are feels like a neighborhood, I think.

I wish they would build a large pedestrian bridge/overpass over the Holland Tunnel entrance/exit. A wide pedestrian bridge (like 300 feet wide) covered in grass and landscaping would make for an awesome park, and a way to tie that area into Hamilton Park.

This is Tony, sometimes referred to as the "Gordon's Fisherman" who wanders around downtown with a shopping cart.

I guess it's almost as convenient to just drop off a Citibike at the Paulus Hook ferry and pick another one up at WFC. But it's annoying that you can cross rivers and boroughs with the same bike, but not from JC. It's almost like, well what's the point of an integrated system? Oh well, maybe it will change over time.

Either way; I just signed up yesterday so I'm excited to get started. I'm low on the experience scale of urban street bicycling, so I have a lot to learn and I guess I should probably get a helmet.

Is it the same policy with dropping off bikes between separate boroughs?

Does anybody know if I can hop on a Citibike in JC, jump on a ferry, and ride the Citibike and drop it off near my office in Manhattan? It's not clearly answered in the FAQs on Citibike's page (says you can use it on both sides of the Hudson, but doesn't mention picking up on one side and dropping off on the other).

Do we know for sure if it's still an active construction site? I haven't seen any press, Facebook updates, website updates for maybe a year or so...

Anybody seen any construction going on at White Eagle Hall? Who wants to place bets on what opens first, Monty's Bar or White Eagle Hall?

Then why make the glass which spans the entire counter, opaque? Not only does it look bad from a design perspective, it makes it seem like they have something to hide.

Agreed that it's two different categories entirely, kind of like a pizza slice joint versus a wood fired brick oven, Neapolitan pizza place. Different flavors, different experience.

I hope they consider later hours on Fridays and Saturday nights...

A new "Chinese hot spot" restaurant
Home away from home

The former aquarium store on Jersey Ave (H2O Aquarium) has a permit in the window saying that it is being renovated into a "Chinese hot spot restaurant".

Can we safely assume they meant "hot pot" restaurant? Anybody know the scoop?

Re: Has Raval Closed Down?

We walked by the other night and thought it was odd that it was closed, although didn't notice brown paper in the windows. Hmm.

I have to say the food was very, very good but I found the design of the place very awkward, particularly the front part (as soon as you walk in), as well as the entire lower level/basement, which felt exactly like a basement and not a place where I'd want to drop $150 for a meal.

Maybe they have realized this, and are making some design changes, in which case I think that's a good thing for sure.

Re: Burger opening Mon 12/21 on 1st & Erie
Home away from home

Stopped in tonight...

The place really has a good looking design. My only complaint here is that there is a very high, very opaque glass "wall" around the entire cooking area, which A) kind of closes off an otherwise very nice open airy space, and B) it's kind of annoying to not see what's going on behind there. That irked me, quite a bit actually - you'll see for yourself what I mean. But generally, the space is nicely done.

While I was on line waiting to order, I peeked over this "wall" and I saw a couple things that made me NOT order a burger. The cooks were plopping the meat onto the grill and immediately and extremely forcefully pressing the heck out of it, like really squeezing it, until very flat and thin. The first thing I learned about cooking meat is that you NEVER do that, as it removes a lot of the juices that makes a burger delicious. Secondly, I noted that the cooks were applying seasoning of some sort, from a shaker, AFTER the burger was on the grill for a minute or so. That's weird. Burgers need to be seasoned so that the seasoning is evenly spread throughout the meat.

So - we ordered a chicken sandwich, buffalo style, with truffle fries. The chicken sandwich was pretty tasty, although very pedestrian and small for $7.50.

The black molasses BBQ sauce is really awesome, and a good dipping sauce for the fries, which were also very tasty.

Service-wise, I think they are going to have some issues, so long as the demand remains high. There were a lot of people standing around waiting for their food. There are also only about 5-6 seats in the entire place...It's kind of like a fast food format, but NOT fast.

This place needs to revisit a few things...specifically I think they need to step up their burger game if they are going to call themselves Burger Eatery. The things I saw do not happen in a proper burger joint.

Although I can see this place becoming popular, actually. Look how jam packed Left Bank always is, and I don't think their food is that good. I think there is a market in JC for mediocrity, when formatted a certain way (kind of trendy/cute space).

They could differentiate themselves immediately if they operate as a late night kind of place. Actually, they would probably do quite well if they did that.

I'm really surprised that there are no development plans for the Old Colony plaza, as there are with the Metro Plaza. It's an outdated, suburban style strip mall, entirely out of place with its urban surroundings and it is prime real estate, on the periphery of the Van Vorst Park neighborhood.

Will Old Colony as it stands today exist in 15 years? My guess would be no.

This may be the first JC bar with no TVs, perhaps a new day has dawned. Any decent beer choices, or is it mostly cocktails and wine?

It does seem like an awful place to put an elevator, I feel like it should be off to the side of the mezzanine level. Where it is now makes things really crazy during peak commuting hours.

When I first started using Uber, an UberX from Grove Street area to EWR was about $17-20, all in. The last time, maybe a month ago, it was about $30 and that did not include surge pricing. The rates seem to have gone up in the past 6 months or so.

My understanding is that the place is going to be reborn as a "beer garden".

Hmm, I feel like we're pretty well covered with the beer garden thing between Zeppelin and Taphaus. But if it's actually a well executed beer garden, well that could be something. I honestly think anything is better than sports bar/club/office drone happy hour/sushi special/bar and grill which is what is was most recently.

Was walking around during the daytime last week, and peeked into this pet shop that is becoming a bar. Work is well underway, there was a bar that was fully framed out. The space looked cozy - sizable but not massive - which in my opinion bodes well for a bar. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

Last night I was doing some laundry at Carolina's and there were a bunch of dudes scouting out the Sushi Tango space and discussing things, presumably about how to renovate the space.

I have never been in Sushi Tango, but it was empty and lit up so I got to see the size of the place. Bigger than I thought.

Was this the place that years ago was Downtown Eddie's? I think that closed down just before I moved here.

The door to The Archer was open today so I peeked in. The space looks really cool. It looked like there were a bunch of booths, and the bar was towards the back. I really was impressed with the looks of the place. It looks to me like they are not THAT far away from completion. Maybe a couple months. Looks like they updated their website aesthetically, but no real info otherwise: http://www.archerbar.com/

Ha, this thread is about 90% questions and 10% answers.

Does anybody have any intel on the ground floor commercial space at the "Vito A Lofts" on Columbus just west of Jersey Ave? It's been outfitted for some sort of commercial or retail operation.

By the way, the building actually looks like a cool building, I just don't know if I could get over telling people that I live in the "Vito A. Lofts", LOL.

Re: Should tipping be eliminated at eateries?

I don't have super strong feelings about this at sit-down restaurants (although it would be nice to not have to think about/calculate tips), but it's takeout joints and other regular stores that drive me nuts with having a tip line on the credit card slip. Like, I feel like a dick if I put $0.00, but I don't feel that you deserve a tip for just handing me something. LOL. Like a liquor store for example. Thirsty Quaker is a culprit. I buy a couple six packs, then I when I sign the credit card slip there is a line for tip. Come on. It's awkward. Enough is enough with forced tipping.

PATH / MTA transfers

What's the easiest way to transfer to the L at 14th Street, after arriving at 14th Street via Path? I could have sworn I've done it before...but maybe it's only on one side of the tracks?

Are there other spots where you can switch from PATH to MTA without going above ground? I know at 23rd you can switch to BDFM.

Speaking of which, anybody know the ETA on the underground passageway between WTC terminal and Fulton Center?

Re: PATH-Weary Jersey City Wants to Build a Pedestrian Bridge to Manhattan
Home away from home
Home away from home

Obviously the idea is a little far fetched, but in reality, something like this WILL BE needed. Some other form of crossing will have to exist in 20 years or so.

The State of NJ in particular should think about this, because this would actually generate actual, real tourism to Jersey City (not just people staying in the several hotels on the waterfront and visiting Manhattan). This would draw people STAYING in Manhattan, to Jersey City, which basically does not happen in any way today. It would also increase the desirability of staying in a JC hotel, because you can just walk across to Manhattan.
