Re: Unleashed Pit Bull attacks jogger in Lincoln Park -- Owner leaves woman bleeding

The sheriff's office needs to be much more aggressive about enforcing dog-related laws in Lincoln Park. Besides off leash issues, dogs are not allowed in the playgrounds and are not allowed to be walked by children (and combinations thereof, like the ~5 year old I once saw walking a pit bull in the playground).

If you see any of this going on while you're in the park, please call the Hudson County Sheriff's Office at 201-915-1300. Program this number into your cell phone and use it. Thank you.

It's a beautiful building -- the whole upstairs is a ballroom, there is a great custom stained glass window on the stair landing, they have the original furnishings, etc, but last I was there a few years ago, it needed serious work. The average age of the membership 5-10 years ago had to be in the 70s. They did bring in some younger blood finally a few years back, but I'm not sure how that went. I understand at least one of the new members I knew was kicked out for reasons unknown to me. At one point they could barely pay their heating bill, let along think about restoring the place. They rent out parking spaces in back which produces some income, but surely not a lot.

If they could afford to fix up the ballroom and install a real kitchen, it would make a very nice venue to rent out for small weddings and so forth.

The reserved permits are $125 a month, and are aimed at commuters as Garyg said. It would not be the best choice for someone who lives there since they do street cleaning from 6:00-6:30.

The major Kennedy Blvd bus line is the #10, which is now integrated with the 99S line (Bayonne to Manhattan Port Authority via JSQ and the Heights). There's a stop every 2-3 blocks on JFK, so there might be one right in front of the school.

It does not show up on the NJ Transit search as it's operated by Red & Tan / Coach USA. Here's a PDF of the schedule:

Sorry, the overly defensive attitude of your responses along with the stats ("3 shifts, 24/7, about 1000 cops") reads like you are a cop or have one in your family at least. And it's not this thread only:

http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... 9&forum=10&post_id=132435

I think a residency requirement would go a long way towards increasing the quality of policing in this city. At least it would stop JC cops with responding with "why do you live here?" when taking a crime report (I think everyone in this town has one of these stories.)

Your arguments are weak. Yes, I would like teachers and firefighters to live here too. Yes, I think NYC should have similar requirements. "The world has changed, as did the demographics." -- not so sure about that one, sounds like a half-assed apology for white flight. And as for the taxes, people were complaining here about JC taxes which pay for JC police. If those police are paying their own taxes to other municipalities, then the 'cops pay taxes too' arguement in meaningless in this regard.

I think we've got some overly anti-cop people in this thread, and some overly pro-cop ones as well. I land somewhere in the middle, as I've seen both the good and bad while living here. And I'm honestly curious what percentage of cops live here, and would appreciate anyone who could answer the question with numbers instead of rhetorical questions.

It would be great if they all lived here as they did in the"old days". The world has changed, as did the demographics. Anyhow, what does this have to do with the quality of policing? If those folks don't live here they pay taxes where they live.

To the couple of cops who are obviously on this thread, can you tell me what percentage of JC's police force actually live here and pay property taxes to the city? My impression is it's well below half.

You're totally missing the point. A supermarket would just be a piece of it -- the commericial tenant on the ground floor.

This is all part of a national program called Hope VI housing, which acknowledges that the high-rise, high-density projects of the mid-20th century have been a failure, and replaces them with low density mixed-use developments. This is a national movement with federal funding -- nothing specific to Jersey City. Read all about it here:

http://www.hud.gov/offices/pih/programs/ph/hope6/

If you know Lafayette Village on Grand St, near Fairmont, that's a Hope VI project:

http://www.jcha.us/lafayette_village.htm

Or the very nice looking low-rise housing that's going up where half of the Duncan projects were knocked down (corner of Truck Rt 1/9), that's Hope VI.

More about Hope VI projects in Jersey City here:

http://www.jcha.us/hope_vi.htm

This is a good thing.

it's about this whole secret real-estate plot to blow up the projects to make room for bigger more expensive condos... this is what this reminds me of... There is a lot of greasing going on im sure.

I mean, replace the projects with buildings that will meet the need for both low-income and middle income people... Fine. Downtown has already become unlivable by normal blue collar workers as it is why keep stretching it out? And to replace it with a da** supermarket?

I love JC I really do but is this really the best decision for the city?

I agree the projects over on Montgomery aren't exactly glamarous, but more police presence, tighter security etc could have alleviated all of that, but they didnt want to do that.. and maybe on purpose, maybe they wanted it to get so bad that they wouldn't have been met with resistance in tearing it down. Something to think about.

I have to say it:

"I told you so."

This is in response to all those people on various Beacon threads here who consistantly brought up Montgomery Gardens as a reason not to live there, as a reason it was a bad investment, etc, etc. It was very obvious that Metrovest would not put $500M+ into the Beacon knowing the projects next door would remain. No surprise here that they're coming down.

I'm also going to predict that Metrovest gets the project. It's in their best interest to make it as nice as possible, so I see them willing to spend more than the other 3 potential developers.

Hague's apartment was so big -- something like 20 rooms over 2 floors -- that it was carved into a number of apartments sometime after his death. The one for sale a few years ago may have been the one with his wood paneled library, which is just stunning.

A few more photos here:

I'm not sure I buy that 113 apartments were damaged. It appears the majority of the damage would be contained to that one corner. Although I guess water and smoke travel easily throughout a building.

Bash this all you want, but I say it's a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. It's an attractive renovation (the rendering IS very accurate) and they've done some interesting stuff to stand out from the Beacon. A lot of folks looking in the area will pick the Beacon for all the amenities, but all these guys need to attract is 18 more buyers, versus the Beacon's many hundreds of apartments to come online in upcoming years. (I also think the Beacon is going to do fine in the long run, adjusting to mainly rentals now, then back to condos later.)

Re: Pipe under city's street, but repair bill is all owners
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm not sure what the fuss is here. Isn't it standard everywhere that the city is responsible for the mains and the homeowner is responsible for the service line from the main to the house? When I bought my house, one of the first things the inspector noted was that the lead service pipe would have to be replaced. It's finally going to be done this year (at a total cost above $5k, by the way) so will the Jersey Journal be interviewing me too?

About the only thing I think is stupid is the cop requirement. If it's a big job and/or they have to cut straight across the street, fine. But for a standard house job where the house is on the same side of the street as the water main, it seems unnecessary.

Use Capitol (as mentioned by a bunch of people earlier in this thread) for a flat roof. Or if you need asphalt shingles, slate, tile, or copper work, use Bower & Co who is based out of Kearny. They will not be the lowest bid, but the work is exceptional.

Re: Journal Square: Stricter cab rules in motion
Home away from home
Home away from home

If you're the first one in the cab, you have the right to say that no one else be allowed in. Just let the driver know this, and don't be meek about it. I used to get annoyed about this too, but these days I generally don't care if someone else is in there too, as long as the driver doesn't wait more than 30 seconds to find that 2nd fare.

Another trick, which isn't really allowed, is to walk to the last cab in line instead of the first one. If you tell the driver you want to leave NOW (again, don't be meek!) He'll usually take you instead of having to wait to get to the front of the line where he might be able to get 2 fares. Just don't try to do this when one of the taxi inspector guys is watching the line.

Re: Weirdest Street Names in JC?

I've always been amused by some of the odd local pronunciations. I'm thinking specifically of Tonnele Ave (or spelled Tonnelle if you're in North Bergen.) Out-of-towners always say it 2 syllables: Tonn-elle. But long-time locals know it's 3 syllables: Tonn-elle-ee (long E added to the end.) Anyone know why?

It's also taken me a while to get used to saying Secaucus with a long-E and emphasis at the start: SEE-cau-cus.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the C-Town on Bergen. It's way better than the C-Town I used to go to in the East Village when I lived in NYC. The deli counter has decent brands like Boar's Head and Land of Lakes, and the store has a selection of interesting Middle Eastern products to appeal to the local Egyptian community.

It's a general historic standard these days to build extentions in a modern fashion with different materials so you can clearly delineate what is old versus what is new. I was at the paint store last week, and I thought the building looked great.

Shelley's, which is a Met supermarket, is at the corner of Bergen and Duncan, and is ok for staples, but the hours are not great. I did notice recently they are open until 8 PM on Thurs and Fri which helps. We alternate between Pathmark on 440, Super Stop & Shop in Bayonne on 440, and the A&P over the the Holland Tunnel, all obviously a car ride away.

There are more threads here on daycare if you search the archives. I suspect the webmaster will combine this with one of them once he sees it.

River School is very good, but expensive as noted (especially for 3 day -- you're paying for more like 4 days) and the wait list is very long, over a year and a half in my experience. Unless you sign up BEFORE you get pregnant, you have little chance of getting in when your kid is 6 months old.

Another option downtown is Baby Galileo on Grove. I think it's fine for babies, but can't comment on the toddler and preschool programs. The price is very reasonable. I understand they have a wait list these days, but surely nothing like the River School's.

Attempted armed carjacking:

http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerse ... 21428874343690.xml&coll=3

They need cameras in the lot with monitors inside the store for the security guard to see. And if he sees anyone just hanging around, they need to be approached and told to leave. If people know the lot is aggressively patrolled, they will go elsewhere when they are desperate for cash. Right now it's too easy a target.

This is the 2nd serious incident at that parking lot in about one week. It's a magnet for trouble as it's the only 24 hour store in the area. I saw some problems there a few years back and emailed Walgreens corporate via their website, and they seemed to take it very seriously. I got phone calls back from both corporate and local store management. The security guards they hire seem to just sit there instead of frequently checking the parking lot and making loiterers move on. I can't believe they don't appear to have any cameras in the parking lot after all this. If anyone out there frequents this store, and cares about your safety at night there, please go to this page, click on "Safety" and fill out the form:

I'm not sure what the local law is, but in NYC, once you have a few units you must have either a sprinkler system or fire escapes. If the law here is similar, I wouldn't see them backing down, as it's a basic safety issue.

I got one of these the other day despite me visiting the court in person weeks ago and filling out a form requesting a court date. It's so annoying that they no longer take walk-ins for parking court. It's even more annoying that I'm continually calling the phone number on the notice today (201-209-6700), and when you follow the prompts and press #2 to speak to a person, it hangs up on you. Same thing if you press 0 for operator. So typical of JC that they can't even get a phone system to work properly.

I think it's about the coolest street name in JC. Vroom is an old Dutch name. Many of the streets around there have similar names as it was the location of the original 17th century Dutch settlement. You'll see the same names on the headstones in the graveyard across from the Old Bergen Church.

Re: Inquiry: Engineer/Contractor - Residential In Ground Oil Tank
Home away from home
Home away from home

It's usually 2 different firms/contractors. I used the following 5+ years ago:

Testing: Advanced Tank Services, Sparta NJ, 800-440-8265. We only did computerized accoustical testing, but I believe they offer soil sample testing as well, but it's likely more expensive.

Our tank passed, but we abandoned it a couple years later due to a change to gas heat.

Abandonment: US Tanks, Howell NJ, 732-961-2057. They specialize in foam fills, which is cheaper and less disruptive than removal, and has an advantage over sand filling in that if you do have to remove the tank later, it won't weigh a ton because it's filled with lightweight foam, not heavy sand.

Even if you're keeping oil heat, you should abandon the tank and put a new one in your basement. Sooner or later, all underground metal tanks fail. And as fellow jslist user 'worm' can tell you, it's very, very expensive when that happens.

The New Jersey Room at the main library has local maps:

http://www.jclibrary.org/service/njroom.php

The older ones (I'm thinking late 19th century) often identify the landowner, and show the shape of the floorplan of any houses. By checking maps from different years, you can sometimes figure out the decade your house was built (i.e. if it shows up in the 1890s map, but not the 1880s one, you now have a ~10 year range it could have been built in.)
