Stop Spectra - Volunteers needed for Volunteer Expo April 26 @ Loew's Theatre

FERC will be releasing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) soon that will be the last time the public may comment on Spectra's proposed gas pipeline route through Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken to NYC.

NO Gas Pipeline will need volunteers to collect signatures for our city-wide petition . The Volunteers Expo on April 26th from Noon until 8PM at Loew's Theater at Journal Square will give us an opportunity to both gather signatures to petition that day as well as sign up volunteers to help us city-wide. We need you to work any amount of time that day to help out at our table and signing up volunteers through the crowd or directing them to our table.

Please contact Dale Hardman by phone or email below if you can help us all Stop Spectra by volunteering April 26th, anytime from Noon to 8PM.

Thanks for all you do and I will see you that day at Lowe's for the Volunteer Expo!

On April 27th, the voters of Jersey City will have an extraordinary opportunity to bring change to public education in our city. Three seats on the Board of Education are at stake in the election, and with them the possibility of a new majority on the board. Imagine what becomes possible when the Board of Education is no longer in the control of Jersey City's political machine. I've imagined it, which is why I have been doing my best to support three great candidates: Carol Harrison-Arnold, Sue Mack, and Marvin Adames. You can read bios for each of them here:

Jersey City Board Of Education Candidates

Six days before the election, on April 21st, there will be an education-reform fundraiser t Zeppelin Hall in Jersey City to support Marvin, Carol, and Sue.

We will be joined by two special guests: Anibal Ramos and Shavar Jeffries, who are at the forefront of education reform in New Jersey. t is rare that these gentlemen appear at a joint event outside their own city of Newark. They are doing it on April 21st to make sure Newark can soon have, in Jersey City, a partner in in pushing the urban education conversation in New Jersey.

I am hopeful you can join us for this special event.

Sincerely
Steven Fulop

Demolition Hearings Set to Resume

Zoning Board To Consider Permits March 29, 6pm, City Hall

The Jersey City Zoning Board of Adjustment is scheduled to resume hearings on applications to demolish the Harsimus Branch Embankment. The next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, March 29, in City Hall Council Chambers, 280 Grove Street, beginning at 6pm. If more time is needed, the hearing may be carried to Wednesday, March 30th.

You may recall that, in October 2010, the Board, by a vote of 4-3, denied Certificates of Economic Hardship on a commercial basis. The applicants are now returning to finish their applications for Certificates of Appropriateness to demolish the historic structure.

All of us in Jersey City are lucky to have Coach Bob Hurley working with these young men who have a caring mentor. Hurley leads by showing that hard work, discipline, execution, team work, and application to academics as well, build a lifetime of self confidence and initiative that may be used in anything they choose to do in life.

Coach Hurley is the best and makes me proud to live here.

Honda Civics are on every state's insurance list as easiest stolen.

My former super had his civic stolen 3 times, each time found in Newark, not hurt. Cops told him likely kids who come into JC by PATH and joyride cars easy to break into back home. Check with Newark police.

What part of my post comment "seems like a bit of bull" ? Please be more specific as to "what" you object to without swinging a sledge hammer to my entire post for the effect of rhetorical hubris.

That would require not only building the Embankment park, but rebuilding the bridges so it connects to back to the rails.

Early on in this topic thread the renderings are posted showing the rebuilt overpass bridges connecting to the rails.

Also, those rails are private property of Conrail last I looked, and are active shipping lines.

The Embankment rails were improperly sold to Hyman by Conrail without properly putting the Embankment property through the required federal abandonment process, up for a 180 day hearing for sale to city and county.

The Surface Transportation Board(STB) agreed with us, then was overruled and is now on appeal in Federal Court to vacate the overturning of the STB's original finding on behhalf of the Embankment Preservation Coalition.

The rails are NOT "active shipping lanes".since the mid 1990's.

Since when are people permitted to hike on them?

I never said they were. Read my opening comment above which states clearly:

"The Embankment as an open space park would become a destination spot regionally and nationally due to connection to national East Coast Greenway Alliance, a 3,000 mile hike and bike trail from Maine to Florida.

As the Home Page of the Embankment states:

"The Embankment and streetscape will be a linchpin in a network of walkable, bikeable greenways within the City of Jersey City, and beyond. From north to south along Jersey Avenue, a main boulevard, the Embankment will serve as a midpoint in a series of parks, including Hamilton Park, Van Vorst Park, and Liberty State Park. From east to west, the Embankment will join the Hudson Waterfront Walkway with the Hackensack Meadowlands, via the Bergen Arches. A 2004 Northern New Jersey Route Study for the East Coast Greenway recommends this latter route as the main ECG pathway through Hudson County. The route has been endorsed by all six counties and 26 municipalities along it."

Does anyone know the state's stance on this issue? Have they taken one?

Governor Christie has not "officially" spoken out one way or the other. Christie filed as a formal intervenor (legal standing) against the proposed LNG facility at Perth Amboy as did our own law firm, Eastern Environmental Law Center.

Christie said he was "fulfilling my campaign promise." Christie later vetoed the entire project under "his veto authority under the Deepwater Port Act to prevent construction off our shore," Christie also said, "I will not subject our State's shore and economy to the environmental risks that are inseparable from such a project."

Apparently Christie's comments don't apply to Jersey City.

Lobbyist close to Christie, hired by Spectra, recently contacted our lawyer asking us to meet with them at the Marriot Hotel located at Newark Airport. NJ Sierra Club and NO Gas Pipeline met with them in person while Food and Water Watch and Atlantic Sierra Club were on speaker phone.

I would do it at Grove Street. I hand out flyers for NO Gas Pipeline loudly proclaiming how to stop Spectra Energy and their gas pipeline coming through Jersey City and only had Port Authority ask me to stand 10' away from escalator. I think if you busk in semi-circle plaza when Groove on Grove is NOT happening you MAY be ok. I'd check with Cultural Affairs Dept. in basement of City Hall to be sure and if license is necessary.

Good luck to all you buskers!

I actually had the opportunity to hear Marvin Adames speak recently and while he seems like a nice guy with an interesting story... he also seemed completely unqualified to be running for the Board of Ed. Yes he is a lawyer in Newark but he didn\'t seem to have much familiarity with current educational issues, in fact it seems like it has been awhile since he has set foot in a public school. In addition, I see nowhere in his bio that he has done ANYTHING with youth outreach or education. Has he coached basketball?, run a youth program?, been involved with a local Boys and Girls Club? I also believe he has only lived in Jersey City for two years. His child is not even school aged so he has not had to navigate any school system. Unless he has political aspirations, I do not understand why he is running for the BOE. I would like to know why he was chosen? What did the Fulop advisory board see in him that qualified him to serve on the board?

Hi. Good question. I am not going to get into every minute detail that was discussed (we agreed to keep that private), but what I can say is that the selection committee did not look at candidates only as individuals but what they brought as a team. While I would have agreed with your comments (e.g. only lived here 2 years, child does not yet go to school) if he were the only person that we are backing, that is not how we made our selection. We believe that as a team, these three work well together. There were several meetings and a TON of discussion, at times not unlike the movie 12 Angry Men, but I believe we as a committee are happy with the results.

Sue has a wealth of previous JCBOE experience, has always been responsive to community members and had a special needs child in the school system (so she is our JCBOE expert and special needs expert). Carol has had children in the public school system and was an involved as a parent in the PTO as well as sitting on a charter school board (so she is our Jersey City public school parent expert and our charter school expert). In addition to being a prosecutor and seeing daily the negative results of poor urban education, Marvin represents the very essence of what some of our school children have faced - he grew up with a teenage single mom in one of the poorest urban neighborhoods (so Marvin is our expert in seeing the results of bad education expert and our he\'s been through it expert). On a personal level, I also like the fact that he is a prosecutor a lot and hoping his knowledge of how municipalities work from a legal perspective will prove useful for the board.

At my company when I put together a team for a project, I don\'t pick 3 people with the same skill-set. Quite the opposite, I pick people with complimentary skill-sets so that the team has a diverse set of experience. The same principle was applied in this selection.

Hope that clarifies.

Cheers,
Candice

Great reply Candice!

While I didn't interview them, I have met all three, heard them speak at their launch and will be supporting them for the BOE election on April 27th from 7 AM until 9 PM. (*NOTE*: Time changed at last BOE mtg)

I'm all for more parks, but can we stop the insanity of the Embankment people? The High Line has elevators to bring up the disabled and has multiple workers with walkee-talkees patrolling it constantly. If it wasn't patrolled and cleaned, it would become a seedy no-man's-land in days.

To turn the Embankment into that kind of park, we'd need bridges to join all the sections, multiple elevators, security guards, lamps, fencing, and landscaping. No one's going to spend that much money for a park that doesn't even go through a high-traffic part of town. Pick your battles, people. There are plenty of other places to beautify downtown.

The Embankment as an open space park would become a destination spot regionally and nationally due to connection to national East Coast Greenway Alliance, a 3,000 mile hike and bike trail from Maine to Florida.

Locally, the Embankment you would hve additional usage and nearby retail places, whether restaurants, bike shops, etc, would all benefit. Like the High Line, we would add to tourism and economiic development as well as recreation for all.

A non profit group appointed by the City, such as the Enbankment Preservation Coalition, could apply for corporate grants to manage the property after JC purchased it from Con Rail if EPC federal suit succeeds or through eminent domain purchase by JC.

Resized ImageAccording to this 2001 study for the East Coast Greenway Alliance, they reference how much NJ generated in tourism dollars for the state :

TABLE 2: State of Tourism Along ECG

New Jersey $13.9 Billion

Local and Tourism Use of the East Coast Greenway

e) Services and Amenities
Another component of a successful trails tourism program is evaluating if the local communities have the necessary infrastructure to support a growth in trails tourism. For example, are there shopping and retail opportunities for visitors? What are the hospital and emergency medical facilities like and where are they located in relation to the trail? The ECG will be one of the few, if not the only trail, to cut through major urban areas where the tourism infrastructure
already exists to a large extent. Preferences for services and amenities are very dependent on the
how the user travels (alone, with family, with spouse, or in a group).

f) Transportation and Access
The East Coast Greenway is located proximate to the most developed transportation infrastructure in the United States:

? System of interstate highways and expressways allows for fast access to the whole north east
corridor

? The many international airports, some of the busiest in the country, are located here, with direct flights to every part of the world
? Numerous smaller, regional airports
? Rail transportation along the northeastern corridor by Amtrak. Rail should be considered a critical partner in trail access since it facilitates linear movement. The policies regarding the transport of bicycles
have restricted its role to date.

? Not to be overlooked because of the urban nature of the ECG, is access to public local transportation such as buses, subways and ferries

Transportation corridors dominate the northeastern United States. This is can be a positive feature, providing linear movement along the ECG corridor.

Not true. There has been NYC community uproar as they only found out about the pipeline when Spectra formally filed on Dec 20th.

NO Gas Pipeline is part of a coalition that involves both NYC and NY State community groups including Damascus Citizens Group, who Director Josh Fox dedicated his Oscar nominated film, Gaslands to for their excellent work nationally on fracking.

This NYC group will soon have a major press release.

No, that was it! Spectra was asked by Councilman Fulop over a year ago to hold their presentation in City Hall Council chambers with a Q&A forum and they refused. Instead they purposely scheduled to appear only at a city council caucus meeting knowing that council rules do not permit the public to ask questions, only observe. At least the council did move it from the small caucus room that holds maybe 30 to the large council chambers of last night. Go to our site, sign up for alerts by clicking that button to get further updates of what you may do to stop the pipeline from going through Jersey City. Only our site alerts you as to latest update. The next event is FERC's issue of an EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) for public comments in writing or on FERC's site, This could start as early as Feb 26th to as late as April 26th. FERC then gives the public 30 days to comment on the EIS. After public comments, FERC makes it's final ruling. After ruling, any who filed as intervenors, such as our group, may file to sue FERC to overturn their ruling in Federal Court.

Touche! Why not do both?

The venue fee is prohibitive for most in addition to forget showing film unless you rent your own DVD projector as we did for Gasland, which go for $750/day with the necessary throw lens of 5000 lumens minimum. If we hadn't the City's support we couldn't have shown Gasland at Lowe's as they own it and provided the necessary insurance liability coverage plus free rental.

Todd of Maxwell's has been the only music producer able to use Lowe's effectively for music despite the bad acoustic sonority. The one exception I've heard was John Hammond's incredible tour de force on solo guitar and mouth harp.

Within days, Congress will vote on legislation that could cut 100% of funding for public broadcasting, which includes $3 million to fund programming operations for New York Public Radio (WNYC and WQXR), plus an additional $1.25 million for innovative, original programming. These proposed cuts threaten WNYC and public broadcasting as a whole.

170 million Americans rely on public radio and public television for trusted news and perspective and programming that brings the arts to everyone ? for a minimal investment of $1.35 per U.S. citizen per year.

You can make a difference ? contact your representatives in Congress to let them know how you feel about federal funding for the independent journalism, thought-provoking news, conversations and cultural programs you hear on WNYC.

From: Mike Benard Spectra Energy's 3-minute Kiddie Video -- No exploitation is too pathetic for gas industry -- "high-level messages"? When gas companies send children to defend the industry, it is a sign of desperation. Houston-based Spectra Energy?s latest 3-minute PR effort in the form of a kiddie video begins with the kids comparing natural gas to farts, when asked, ?What is natural gas?? ?It?s kind of gross,? replies one child. Maybe the kids know that the gas industry?s behavior stinks. Believe it or not, Spectra Energy, calls these ?high-level messages? in a press release. More than 20 kids are used in the 3-minute video, all of them children of Spectra Energy employees. Suggestion: If the company is going to use kids, let them hear the whole story. Let the kids visit with children their age who live in a shale gas zone ? whether Barnett in Texas or Marcellus in Pennsylvania or other shale gas states. But don?t let the gas industry kids stay there long enough to develop nose bleeds, skin rashes or headaches. Explain that this is why gas industry executive families don?t live in a shale gas zone. As of December 20, Spectra Energy has filed their project application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the agency that approves pipeline projects. The deadline to intervene is January 26. The time to call Govenor Christie is NOW. Demand the Governor Intervene @ FERC! The FERC Process-FILE as INTERVENOR By Jan 26 @ 5PM!
STOP SPECTRA's PIPELINE!! How to File & Why http://bit.ly/gQxczz
Call Governor Christie's office at (609) 292-6000. Suggested script: My name is ______ and I live in Jersey City. Please demand the Attorney General intervene at FERC to stop the natural gas pipeline, proposed to run through Jersey City. Only intervenors can overturn a FERC ruling through the Federal Courts. Mayor Healy has declared to seek Intervenor standing. We ask the Governor to demand our New Jersey Attorney General declare to seek intervenor legal standing with FERC before upcoming deadlines are announced. Call Governor Christie's office at (609) 292-6000.

New Jersey Board of Public Utilities Looks to Intervene in Spectra Energy?s Natural Gas Pipeline Application

Seems like Hoboken is also jumping on board to intervene. JC Independent reported on it today. Sounds like the State and municipalities are joining forces and building a strong defense team against Spectra!

Hoboken will apply for Intervenor Status

While NO Gas Pipeline is pleased to see others intervene, understand that is step 1 in the FERC Process.

Filing as an intervenor gives you access to info made public in the process and IF you decide to sue FERC to overturn their ruling on behalf of Spectra you have legal standing to do so.

Only those who filed as an intervenor AND sue have a final voice. NO Gas Pipeline intends to sue if necessary.

Go to our site, sign up for alerts and to volunteer to spread the word. Most folks in JC don't know about the pipeline.

Please donate funds for expert witnesses, mailings and expenses for any possible suit. ALL monies will go to fight Spectra! Click on the PayPal button at our site to donate any amount.

Don?t know if you already knew this.. Spectra has been running legal notices in the JJ since last week. (12/30/10)

It is a full page notice that says they filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) . It says land owners near the proposed pipeline will receive notices in the mail. It has a lot of detail. I will give a heads up the next time I see it in the JJ. (but you guys should be buying the JJ anyway!!)

We are well aware that Spectra filed their formal application on Dec 20th as was written about by all local media and posted on our home page. We responded to this filing in the Jersey City Independent and on our site. We will be filing as an intervenor with legal standing against FERC represented by the Eastern Environmental Law Center as reported on our web site.

I suggest you check out our site and sign up for alerts for our updates.
