I lived there as a renter in 2004-05. Its a great place, I particularly miss having a clicker to a gated lot for my car. It's a nice, quiet block now that the bodega across the street is gone. (we used to get noise from the idling cars playing music there before) One thing to beware of - make sure their windows have been sealed or replaced recently. The windows are very large and had drafts when we were there. We froze in the winter! Also if you have pets or kids, make sure there are screens on the windows. I asked for those several times and they never installed them.

I agree. In order for entire street to look clean and cohesive the store owners should have no say. It would look better if the trees were planted in every designated island.

Happy Saturday, Gnomey. We totally agree. Totes.

I also think this should be extended to residential streets, where owners should not be able to veto having a tree planted in front of their property if there is room to accommodate one. Although I get the logic that a homeowner who doesn't want a tree will probably not take care of it and just let it die (or help it do so). But that's probably a topic for another thread.

Also, I give JCList at-large a lot of credit. I would have thought that Jeff would have been tarred and feathered by now. Guess when somebody identifies himself and makes a case for what everybody has kvetched about, all the keyboard tough guys wuss out.

Holy crap...I totally agree with both of your points. If I saw a tree planted on my block and saw a neighbor trying to sabotage it, I would totally become the vigilante waterer. The pressure on my hose reaches pretty far across the street.

Pretty much. Nice to see you're catching on.

Seriously though, false-choice arguments aren't your strong suit.

Some folks feel passionate about different things, and react accordingly. If I commented on every douchey thing (IMHO) written on this website, my post-count would be quadruple what it is now. Knock yourself out standing up for what you believe in, like when saabconv ups the ante of classy by responding to a poster "you FAG."

Let us all now shed a tear for the disadvantaged, oppressed yuppies... FO SHO.

And I will shed a tear for the oppressed and disadvantaged Kabili Tayari in return.

As for the "you FAG" comment, I guess it's no more or less malicious then calling someone "fugly", "pathetic" or a "know nothing".

Trust me, when I make argument I do not resort to name calling. There are better ways to make a statement that will push buttons just as effectively.

Unless you close the bars altogether or change the smoking bans inside, people who choose to smoke are going to be outside "loitering."

People accomplish this type of "loitering" a lot quicker in the winter. So perhaps, in the summertime they are throwing a little of actual loitering into the mix with their cigarettes. Also, how do you define the regular hangouts outside the bar at closing? Why is it so hard to say goodbye people, you'll reunite for another night of drinking in a mere 20 hours!

UPDATE:

I was contacted on the phone by a lady in charge of customer service from the Metro Plaza ShopRite and here's what she had to say regarding the incident.

The managers and undercover security personnel are instructed not to get involved with arguing customers and just stand back and observe until somebody might get hurt (waiving your fist an inch away from somebody's face is not enough for them to get involved).

They've tried interfering and breaking up the arguing parties before and it only lead to customers starting yelling at the managers and/or security personnel. (I guess they are too sensitive for that and they are not getting paid enough to risk their precious lives).

She also tried justifying people's behavior by tough economic situation in the country and suggested not to shop at ShopRite in the first week of each month, when most of the people get their checks.

So basically, until somebody gets punched in the face, nobody is gonna do a damn thing. But then it becomes the store's liability, which seems to work for them better this way. Go figure!?

The Barge Bar on Monmouth is in dire need of regulation like this. Fights, loitering and rowdy groups of thugs tend to hang out in front creating a rather intimidating situation for people walking down Monmouth. They act like they own the block, walk around outside with open alcohol containers and whoot and hollar untill 2-3am. The loitering and illegal activity in front of this bar must stop!!!

Add Lamp post, Lucky 7's and the Latin Lounge to that list.

We never got to hear what town she was from. I would love to know where the mysterious pig currents combine with the secaucus dump. Is there is pig farm in lyndhurst we don't know about? Many people have frowned upon my insistence that NO GRAFFITI IS BAD GRAFFITI, even if the text or images are profane, obscene, hateful, or inciteful. (Most grafitti is not the aforementioned -- but when it is, it calls attention to a person that needs embracing, or it is a call to a community to respond with dignity and strength, which, in general, they do.)

Graffiti makers are sometimes artists (as in http://www.graffiti.org/cinci/cinci_16.html), and sometimes graffiti makers are simply people who have something to say. Maybe the painter wants to say "I exist -- and even though no one seems to see me, or care about me -- I still exist and I am going to write my name on this wall to prove it." Maybe the painter wants to say, "I am so angry about X and I have a need to respond to it in a very public way." Maybe the painter chose this medium out of a love for spray paint, or maybe the painter chose it because oil paints (27$ a tube) are three times the price of a good can of spray paint (8$ a can).

Any artist, actor, musician or poet will tell you, "I am a (writer.) I have no choice." This drive to art exists as frequently and as fervently in multi-racial teenagers from "bad neighborhoods" as it does from white girls from Rochester, NY. My artwork (the books I've recently sent to many of you) has no greater value than the "BAM" tag on the bridge. I write poems because I cannot stop myself. I am constantly attempting to exist in a public way, or at least in a way that forces other people to acknowledge me. The same is true of the graffiti artist."

Holy crap this reminds me of the "father...mother..." video art clip by one of the high school students in "Ghost World". This is what lead to the demise of art as we know it. EVERYONE is an artist and EVERYONE's visual take on things must be shoved down our throats. I don't care if you have to show me that "you exist" by putting a shitty throwup on my property. ESPECIALLY, if you are from the burbs, had a college education and are over 25.

they are ok - not the best, not the worst. you just have to be very specific about what they should do, and how much you should pay, and most importantly when.

they do their work in fits and bouts, so giving them the right incentive to work through the project is smart.

they are recommended with some reservations.

I was interested in putting iron fences around the tree islands near our building. Each would cost $650. If this is any indication of their prices in general - they are way too expensive.

As far as the ban on Christmas, evolution, nudes in art...etc. I'm referring to what's happening in schools not life in general. Try attending your kids' "winter" or "holiday" performance in December. There will not be any decorations or songs in reference to any holidays, unless of course the entire gamut of chanukah, kwanzaa..etc are mentioned. If she were to model in a high school or Vo-Tech where there are minors under 18, then yes she would have a bikini on. Being that this is at a private gallery, she probably will be nude. Are you like totally psyched?! Bring some jazz CDs with you to calm your nerves.

Funny, I drew and photographed nudes at The New School when I was 16, and wasn't traumatized. I was uncomfortable drawing male genitalia, but that's part of learning to be a mature artist. The nanny state strikes again. Do high school art history classes today have fig leaves or black rectangles on the naughty bits in Renaissance paintings?

They probably do have fig leaves. Some schools are teaching "intelligent design" instead of evolution after all. And on the other end of it, you have pc morons trying to ban Christmas. (This is coming from a half-jew btw)
