Yes! That is the group. You beat me to it. I will likely join these outings on a regular basis, if my schedule doesn't get in the way. I am normally a morning runner, but it would be fun to meet other like-minded people with a similar interest in beer and running. :)

I would like to run with those guys (I've met a couple of them) but I am normally a very early morning runner (5:30 latest) and I can't make it work.

Regarding LSP - yes, nice place to run but eventually you'll need variety and some hills. There are some awesome routes you can run using the hills behind JC/Hoboken/Weehawken. The view from Boulevard East is unbeatable, especially if you ran there from DT JC!

Then, there's the Pipeline (not that pipeline) up in W New York area. One of my favorite routes is to go up to Blvd East in Union City/W NY (hills), then run back by the waterfront path (flats) with a stop at the end of the pipeline. I think it's about a 13 mile route.

Re: Christie calls on extending school day and school year. In Jersey City

A large part of the question that's missing here is what exactly are they going to do with that extra time in school? If the goal is:

- to do more of what they do now, which is wasting time with the latest edu-gimmicks, focusing on everything but fundamental literacy and math skills, and generating piles of homework, or

- to appease parents who just want their kids kept somewhere until they get out of work

Then this is a recipe for a disaster. If, instead, they find ways to bring back art, music, sports, recreation and things like moderated clubs and homework groups; then maybe it's an idea worth considering.

If we stick with what we do now, but just tack on more time, even fewer skilled people will become teachers and our kids will not gain a thing.

Forget about how we pay for it; we need to think about whether it's really a good idea in the first place.

There are a few running clubs in the area, but not many.

There is a group called Jersey City Runners with a Meetup page - http://www.meetup.com/jcrunners/

There is an informal group call the Jersey City Hillers that meets in the HP area on Saturday mornings.

There are a couple of clubs in Hoboken. Hoboken Harriers is one. The other one is a women's club called the Elysianettes.

There are probably others out there. I would suggest talking to neighbors, people in the gym, or the staff at Fleet Feet in Hoboken. We used to have our own running store (Runner's High) in Newport but, alas, that is no more.

If you want to PM me, I can tell you about the group I run with on weekends.

For races, the runningintheusa site is good. Many people here participate in NYRR races in NYC. They are usually good but can be crowded. Starting in the spring there are also usually a few 5Ks in LSP - Read Write Run, Carlos Negron, etc.

I wonder what traffic pattern will prevail on the upper part of 139 when this begins ?

Take a look at ethanol fireplaces instead of the gel. Same vent-free concept, since the ethanol burns completely. I have been looking at these although I have not installed or used one yet. I think the number of ways you can incorporate these is almost endless.

We had very low pressure on 9th around Coles at 6:45 - probably dropped to zero later but we had already left. Glad I got that shower in, such as it was.

Another positive review for Byron Hutchinson of Hutch Mechanical. Not sure how many that makes. I used him to replace a hot water heater based on feedback from JCL.

Called him at 7:30 pm on his cell, he said he could be there the next morning at 09:00 (it was not a dire emergency). He showed up on time with an assistant. We all looked at the heater and agreed the tank was leaking and needed to be replaced (it was a 10+ yr old AO Smith).

Byron got us a Rheem water heater from GPS at a lower price than I would have paid Home Despot for a lower quality brand. After the cost of the unit and his installation/removal of the old unit, the total cost of the job ended up being reasonable.

I didn't want to spend money on a water heater, but I'd give Byron high marks for being prompt, quick and reasonably priced. The unit works fine but he left his card and told me to call and he'd be right over if there were any issues and he sounded sincere.

LOL, so, in the "how much more ironic can my life get" department, my estranged husband is moving from our (my former) house in Brooklyn to West Side Ave over across from Lincoln Park. It will actually make things more convenient in terms of sharing custody of our dogs and stuff, and truth be told, I was the one who pushed him to look here. We almost moved here twice during our marriage, but he juuuust couldn't handle the leap. Now, though,he needed a lot of space and a yard for the dogs and he was going pay a ton more in Brooklyn, so I am fine with how it worked out. However, aside from knowing a bit about that small stretch of West Side, I don't know what is over there in terms of access to busses to shopping, restaurants, even the name of the neighborhood. I saw the place and it is adorable but he won't have a car and as friendly as we are, I am not going to be schlepping him all over to the supermarket. Can he take a bus to Newport, or out 440 to the movies or Pathmark? What is there in terms of dining besides the Tavern with the good burger? Any insights welcomed.

still wrestling over whether or not this is truly ironic.

I'm not sure we need to turn this into a macroeconomics 101 debate. Direct foreign investment is something most countries actively seek to inject investment capital into the economy. Some of the returns on those investments stay locally, some go back home, some go to remote tax havens like the Cayman Islands. In the end, it all helps put money into the economy and promotes growth.

I have Aetna and it's been fine, but Aetna (like all big insurers) has a million and one different plans. You have to look at which doctors are covered under a specific type of plan, like a PPO, etc. Most of our doctors are in Bergen County and are covered, as is our dentist in Jersey City and all optometrists in the area.

+1. This is a good idea. This development is still in the early deliberative phases, nowhere near groundbreaking, so now's the time to start communicating the neighborhood's desires to Councilwoman Osborne, in person or through an association.

Re: Bought condo under false pretenses

I agree with what JadedJC and others are saying here. Forget about suing the previous owner for now. You have some gaping holes that need to be filled in. I also find the whole thing mind-boggling, especially the 2010 refi. I sold a condo in a 6-unit building a couple of years ago, and the amount of paperwork about the Association required by the bank was immense. We had to show capital reserve bank statements, budgets, lists of approved capital expenditures, % of owner occupancy, names of officers, etc.

Our Association seemed pretty lax to me at times (and I was an officer for a while), but to have none at all defies common sense.

The OP needs to address the code violations first, then get the association properly incorporated according to the bylaws. I'm not clear on the legal terminology, but surely the ownership of every unit in the building is subject to the bylaws, so 50% of the owners can't just decide they "don't want" an association.

Don't think so. Doesn't look like anyone did a major survey on actual water levels - would have been impossible during the storm and a huge effort even after it. I remember seeing some crowd-sourcing stuff (maybe Google had something), but there were not a lot of data points in JC.

That map is nonsense, it shows areas as flooded that definitely didn't. I've seen this map again and again, but it's not based on actual observation, just some elevation dataset.

The unit we are looking at has a lot of nice features we love, but the only thing is that it has a basement (no window) which serves as the master bedroom. Flooding easily came to our mind.

Any comments are appreciated.

On another topic. Tread very carefully in this transaction. As others pointed out, with no egress window, a room in a basement can't be used as a bedroom. It's not legal to use it as a bedroom, so it doesn't seem likely that anyone will appraise that condo as a 2 bedroom. Make sure you're offering what's appropriate for a 1 bedroom with the same SF area. It may not appraise if it's priced as a 2BR and it will be harder to get a mortgage.

What I really appreciate are the few remaining stations in NJ where the attendant will wash your windscreen and rear window while your tank fills up. The guys that do that get tips. Even if they don't do that, I much prefer full-serve. I'm capable of pumping my own gas but I don't derive my sense of independence or self-worth from it.

Not sure how handy you are or how many windows you have, but making the window screens yourself is actually pretty easy and costs a fraction of what custom screens will. The parts come in kits and the only tools needed are a hacksaw and a screen spline tool (which costs less than $5).

We need more comments like the one in the article and, even better, more lines about Exit 13 in Adam Sandler songs. This is already the most densely populated state in the country. If anyone else moves here, we want them to find it on their own - not because it was featured in some bogus real estate magazine in Manhattan - and to really want to live here.

Re: Skunks

Home away from home

Had two encounters of the skunk kind this morning. One skunk coming down the sidewalk toward me at 9th & Coles. I let him have that side to himself since he was obviously enjoying his morning stroll.

The second one was a little close for comfort. I surprised it on the waterfront walk, where it turns a sharp corner in front of Avalon Cove at 6th St. This one had its tail up, made a brief stand in front of me and then ran off into a bush. Thought I was going to need the tomato soup on that one.

This was all at around 5:15 - 5:30. Must be near the end of the wildlife shift.
