One thing that does work though is mentoring. I totally agree with you. I think that since Jersey City has such a strong arts community that it may be a good resource to bridge the gap between the communities.

Another outlet would be through sports programs. Someone posted on the board recently about the soccer lessons. Making arrangements to offer free lessons to families in need once a week would be a good idea. I'm sure that there must be people on this board that would be able to volunteer their time for a shared passion.

I think one of the major issues in the city right now is that there's a tremendous cultural divide. Something needs to be done to bridge the gap. I spend a lot of time in Ft. Greene and Park Slope and I don't sense the tension as much as I do here.

They are being exposed to things that I don't need to see at my age.

I also wonder if stoop sitting stems from not having air conditioning. I find at night my house is much warmer than outside if I don't turn the A/C on...

What is the curfew btw?

I went to court to fight a ticket and there were several kids there that were busted for curfew violations. They were asked to write a 500 word essay about the experience. I don't know if that's an effective punishment.

wtf.... were they tweezers made of gold?

between the tweezers and the old towels you have to wonder if they just feel the need to take things out of spite.

sorry for wasting your time that there wasn't something more valuable in my car.

Are there any rent controlled buildings in JC?

My understanding is that street has had problems for a long long time.

Has it been addressed at any of the neighborhood association meetings?

Might as well try. If nothing else, they may charge you the minimum which can sometimes be half of what you'd pay at the window.

I live fairly close to Miss America, but I've never been. I like Al's Diner mostly because of memories of my pre-JC days when my friends and I use to stop there on the way home rom the city.

For the life of me I'll never understand why these pinheads steal cell phones. Don't they realize that they'll be blocked from making outgoing calls within a few minutes.

To me it's more frustrating losing the contact information..

NJ.com-

Witnesses: Suspect shot by cops on Routes 1&9
A man who witnesses say stole the cab of a tractor trailer was shot at about 5:45 tonight by police on Routes 1&9 in Jersey City, witnesses said.

Witnesses said the thief tried to run over a Jersey City police officer after the stolen vehicle was pulled over. Police in the vehicle behind the tractor trailer cab began firing when the cab backed up, witnesses said.

The cab then went forward and rammed the police vehicle in front of it, witnesses said. That's when police in front of the rig opened fire as well. One witness estimated that at least 20 shots were fired.

The driver, who may have been shot in the head, was pulled from the cab, witnesses said, and taken to the Jersey City Medical Center.

A portion of Routes 1&9 is closed as police investigate.

Re: Bergen Lafayette

I grew up in central NJ and I pretty much have to get in the car all the time now. At least this would be less of a drive for me.

I'd also like to be closer LSP. I like Grove St. VVP and HP, but I don't work in the city so I'm not sure how convenient that would be for me to have to get to the NJTP or to find parking.

In my current neighborhood, I'm the youngest person by about 25 years excluding my neighbors' children. I don't need to be so much in the hub of things, but I'd like to be close enough where it's a little more convenient.

Also another suggestion, you could visit the desk sergeant at the police station in your district to get an idea of what crime is like in the area. If you tell them that you're a single woman, JCPD generally tend to be very straight up.

I think that it's important to remember that there are a lot of neighborhoods outside of downtown that are safe. If your commute is not so much of an issue you may want to consider an area like Country Village or Franklin Park which are to the Southwest and border Bayonne. Both of those communities are convenient to the NYC bus; however, there is little in terms of social life there.

I think that if you're nervous about the area, then you have to go with your gut. I'm also single and I looked in that area when I first moved to JC. One thing that I didn't like is that it was a bit too cramped. I think the best advice that I could give you is if you have a car to go through the area at different times of the day and particularly on a weekend night and ask yourself if it's an area that you would be comfortable walking through if you have to come home alone.

I don't currently rent, but I know that there are a lot of people on the board that are very knowledgeable about what you can get in different areas so I'm sure you could also get some advice on what areas would be within your budget.

Good Luck

Very nice. I'm already getting a good feeling from the neighborhood. It seems like it'd be a good combination of the neighborhood type feel plus the proximity to all of the places that I like to go. And, I didn't realize there were so many parks up there which is a really nice bonus.

Thanks this is good information. I currently live in the Danforth Ave area and I like the neighborhood feeling, but, it can be a bit isolated and nightlife is virtually non-existent. It seems like this area may be a good option for me.

Are there any sketchy streets that I should totally avoid during my search?

I will also be doing some walking around the area this weekend but the Heights seems to be made of a lot of different neighborhoods and I'm just really not sure where to start.

JC Heights- Congress St. Area
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Hi everyone- I've been noticing a lot of posts on the board about the Congress St. area of the Heights. I'm considering relocating within JC and I'd love to get more information on the area.

1. Are there a lot of restaurants in the area?
2. What's around in terms of nightlife?
3. How far is it to the Journal Square Path Station?
4. Is it fairly easy to get to the turnpike from here?
5. Is the area mostly composed of condo units or are there any single and multi-family houses?
6. How's the area surrounding Washington Park?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
