math tutor needed for GRE exam

Home away from home

Does anyone know a math teacher/tutor who can help me with the GRE math? I want to start working now and for a good part of the summer.

I have the prep books already, but I need some tutoring. I hate math.

Come to think of it, all the protesters for ANY seemingly misguided actions from any of our city's fine elected or hired officials seem to be BNR? Imagine the gall of us "outsiders" to want this city to be run efficiently and properly, to be made safer and more prosporous. Damn us, indeed. Damn us all to hell!

Please don't paint all of the BNRs with the same brush. I was born and raised here and definitely do not defend any of the crap from cops, politicians, etc. ( see post #16). You are right, however, that there are a lot of BNRs who have a twisted and even ignorant way of looking at things. Most of the ones who were born here and see things clearly have left.

And many of the cops are BNRs who have moved away. They could give a rats ass about the quality of life in this city because they and their families don't live here.

When you saw the kids playing soccer in the playground, did you ask them to take it somewhere else before calling the cops, or were the kids a little too rough to confront?

theyre on patrol u big bananaheads!! this is why jc sucks. u guys are so stupid and ready to call people out all the time. please do not move past downtown u big idiots. u guys are a bunch of sub-urban pansies!

meanwhile they get shot at, and you're taking sissy, fairy pics.

I was born and raised here and I'm no "pansy". JC cops have a bad habit of hiding out like that. when my kids were small I used to spend a lot of time taking them on nap rides in the car and hanging out in Liberty State Park while they slept. Every single time I went there I saw a JC cop car with cops hanging out, even in the winter. They were not on patrol. It doesn't take a native born JC person to see a cop goofing off.

And from a third generation Jersey Cityite, I can tell you that Jersey City doesn't suck because people from outside here move in and complain about a cop not doing his job. Jersey City sucks because people who were born and raised here continue to put up with and defend the bad behavior of our public officials and public servants.

Thank you Chakotay for posting that newspaper article as it explains exactly what happened last time. I was living in my parents home at the time, pretty much all of the houses on our street were overvalued due to incompetent people doing a bad job. They assumed that the woman across the street from us had put in a finished basement complete with an extra bathroom because she had curtains in her basement windows.

And I have to say that this reevaluation scares me very much. It was very damaging to my neighborhood at the time. A lot of nice neighbors chose to sell their houses rather than get a huge spike in taxes. They had to sell at a loss, and many of their homes were bought up by investors who turned them into section 8 rentals. It was very, very bad for the neighborhoods and the city.

Those of you who are in newly refurbished houses who pay higher taxes and think it's a good thing that your neighbors will get a tax hike, had better think again. When people are forced to sell at a loss, the neighborhood loses and everybody living in them loses. A lot of people I know want to stay here, but are finding it increasingly difficult to do so due to bad schools, lack of services, etc. A big tax hike for some might be the last straw for middle-class people in this city.

I hope this does not play out the same as it did in 1988.

Re: The Hamilton Inn

If anybody goes to the Hamilton Inn and notices that they've decided to turn the music around, please post that info. I'd really like to try the place out, but after reading a few posts I'm afraid to. I really hate loud music in a restaurant. I really hope they do turn the volume down.

Plus, it would be doing the right thing by the owner. It seems like a lot of the people I talk to who've been waiting for the place to open are not the types to like super loud music in a place, and I'd hate to see a factor like that interfere with the success of the place.

And if anyone does encounter a small problem with the place, or with the Parkside Bistro as well, it's better to bring it to the attention of the owner before posting it here. I think most business owners are willing to lisen to constructive criticism from their customers and appreciate it. I once had a small but recurring problem with the pizza delivery from Hamilton Park Pizza Cafe, and I told the owner. Not only was the problem corrected, but he appreciated someone telling him that he always gives us a little something like a free brownie for the kids when we go in there.

On the other hand, if the owner is an arrogant jerk, I think it's better to warn people to stay away from a business.

I am a former teacher and NJEA member. I see no problem with skipping raises for this year so that teachers can keep their jobs. Lots of people in the private sector aren't getting raises or bonuses, but they are happy to still have a job..

When they lay off teachers you can bet they are going to round up the usual suspects; art and music teachers, coaches, aides, reading specialists, etc. The real losers will be the kids. Such a shame. This is my problem with unions. They can be so unwilling to bend.

I grew up in that neighborhood, and that was my park growing up. And, yes, it is a big, beautiful park. It's a county park. Not only is the park nice, but the whole neighborhood used to be beautiful. There are gorgeous victorian homes, and single family homes with lots of space. And NO FLOODING! Imagine how wonderful it would be if my old nabe came back the way downtown did.

There's room in that park for numerous dogruns, playgrounds, and basketball courts and still tons of open space.

To say a child with brain illness is "mentally retarded" is simply statement of fact. To label someone you don't like a "retard" could indeed be offensive. But to label a word offensive when it's just being used with its defined intent is offensive in itself.
We now have a culture where "PC," Politically Correct, has just become to pervasive. To the families and friends of mentally handicapped people, they are mentally retarded, accept that fact. The term is not derogatory, it is simply a statement of fact.

I too have a sister who is mentally retarded, although she is "severely mentally retarded". I wholeheartedly agree with your point. I sometimes think people who use euphemistic or politically correct terms use them because they are uncomfortable with things that are tabu. Also, Just because some people use the word "retard" to degrade people does not make the word itself incorrect. It's the mean or ignorant people who give a word a negative connotation who are the problem, not the word itself. Changing words or terminology does not change the minds of ignorant or mean people.

When I was growing up people made fun of me because I was really skinny. I had no problem with the word, I just had a problem with the jerks who made it their business to point it out.

I wish bars would get away from the habit of hiring girls just because they're hot or whatever. Not only is it discrimmination against men, but it can be annoying to girsl at the bar. As a female, there's nothing worse than sitting at a bar and being ignored by some look-at-me lonnagan bartender girl in that braless black tanktop. Worse yet is to be at the bar with your boyfriend and have her start flirting with him.

I don't go to bars much, but it used to happen all the time. Although I have to say that the girl bartenders down the shore have always been good.

Not

I actually had a woman in a white Jeep Cherokee flip me off as she sped past myself and about 6 kids waiting to cross. Always keeping things classy. Giant trucks, constant sirens and crazy drivers make Monmouth miserable. Try loading kids into a car on Monmouth or 9th without some ahole laying on the horn.

This is one of the worst corners, and it's a problem because that park is right there. Once i was trying to cross with my two little girls and their scooters. Car after car just kept going. One of them was a pair of cops who looked at us lazily and just kept going. I pointed at the sign and yelled in the window, " Thanks Officers!". They just kept going without batting an eye. Doesn't really matter to them because their kids live on a cul-de-sac in Howell.

Another change Christie is trying to make to unemployment is to make it tougher for workers who are fired to collect......this ends up being a financial incentive for employers....why layoff a worker when you can look for a way to fire them instead...thereby not having your unemployment tax raised.

It should be tough for people who are fired to collect. There are a lot of lazy people out there who have the system all worked out. They basically work jobs between collecting unemployment. They know exactly how much time they have to work before they can collect , and they know exactly what they have to do to get fired and still collect unemployment. I know because I've had first-hand experience with them as an employer. These slobs make it difficult for all of the other honest, hard-working people who really need unemployment.

On the other hand, there are also a lot of unscrupulous business owners who do look for a way to fire employees because they don't want to pay the unemployment. My brother-in-law, who has worked in the insurance industry for thirty years, was recently laid off. A month ago he was given a poor review. He saw the hanwriting on the wall because he had never been given a poor work review in his life. The bastards at his company were looking for a possible way to contest his unemployment.

If I have an employee who is a problem, or who has suddenly changed behavior because they want to get fired, I start documenting everything. I also have them sign an employee contract with everything from work hours, days off, and duties included in there. This protects me and the employees.

And cutting unemployment benefits by $50.00 for all is not at all fair, especially for people like my brother-in-law who have worked for thirty years and have never collected.

Re: Good N.J. teachers should speak up for merit pay
Home away from home

Agreed. It's dangerous to measure teacher performance based on test scores, which would have to be very objective standardized tests. If you think districts "teach to the test" too much, can you imagine what would happen if teacher pay depended on student scores?

As one who has taught, I saw terrible burn-out teachers getting paid big bucks, and it was upsetting. Good teachers should get paid more. Everyone in each school knows who the good and bad teachers are, but it's difficult to measure that. It's not like other jobs where you can definitely measure performance based on productivity. Kids are the products of their upbringing, intelligence, culture and socio-economic background.

I would love to see merit pay for good, hardworking teachers, but measuring their performance based on standardized testing is bad, bad.

Here's a novel idea. How about paying teachers good money so that all the smart girls don't go to law school.

I agree. You can blame Bret Shundler, the city, lack of "teen centers" or the poor unfortunate woman who has to work as a security guard in that trash bin. The bottom line is that the Newport Mall is disgusting on the weekends because of the rabble kids that go there. And how can you possibly expect someone without a gun to try and control them? It's highly probable that some of those kids are packing a piece. It's only a matter of time before someone gets shot in that place.

What a shame. It used to be such a nice mall before the trash took over.

God, with the exception of Little Gym, that whole strip mall is full of foul people. I've been in The Chase bank down there twice when some low-life started mouthing off to the bank workers for no reason. Today, the woman behind me on line went nuts because she had to wait on line for about 3 minutes. The manager came over and tried to reason with her in a very respectful, professional manner, but the lady started cursing at her and told her to ,"Get out of my ****ing face". The lady just wouldn't shut up. She just kept going off on the women who work in the bank, yelling and cursing about them and feeling very self-important because she was depositing all of $600.00 - like that's going to break Chase Bank. It was hilarious when she said, " You're over there conversating, when you should be helping me". You people don't know how to keep a professional work ethnic." lol........lol. I would say that I'd go to another branch, but I'd feeling like I was missing something too funny. I'm sticking with Old Colony.
