The wheels on the bus go round and round, right over Gov. Meatballs' staff:

What I've seen today for the first time is unacceptable. I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge. One thing is clear: this type of behavior is unacceptable and I will not tolerate it because the people of New Jersey deserve better. This behavior is not representative of me or my Administration in any way, and people will be held responsible for their actions.

"Jersey City is more than just downtown" is a fair point, but not relevant for Super Bowl visitors. They will be downtown, and they will stay downtown. There is no reason for an out-of-town visitor to be walking around Journal Square, and the fact that Grove St. is "easier to navigate on foot" is hardly the one thing a visitor needs to know about Grove St.

The article would have been more helpful if it suggested downtown places worth a visit.

The dog is 3 and he is not at a shelter. He is in foster care.

I happened to watch a Kathy Griffin stand up where she talked about her adopted dog who has behavior issues. The joke was that fosters will say anything to get a dog adopted: "Loves people; loves kids; etc." Makes me wonder.

I am also in the process of adopting a dog. I've been looking at one that was a breeding stud in a puppy farm for three years. His foster owner describes him as good-natured, but still, after 3-4 months, not house-trained. She says she had other training priorities, but I'm worried that an adult dog might be difficult to house train.

Advice?

There is. Is it as easy as downtown? No but there are numerous buses that can take you around most of the city and Manhatten if need be.

If the public bus service were adequate, all the private jitneys would not be needed to duplicate bus routes.

Re: Recommend the indoor heater please

The Dyson heater is combined with a fan that distributes the heat so the whole room is heated, not just the space near the heater. You can run the fan alone in the summer. It works as advertised. It's very expensive. I got a large discount at Costco.

I have a home office that is 5 degrees colder than the rest of the apartment. Rather than raising the thermostat for the whole apartment, I hoped it would be more economical to heat the office and keep the rest of the apartment at a lower temp.

Apparently, the cost of the electricity for the heater made up for any gas savings and my bills were not any lower.

Fortunately, Cosco has a very liberal return policy.

Excellent. Newark did this years ago and settled for $100 million. Of course they have the port and the airport under PA control, so our settlement may not reach that level. But I still wonder why JC never followed suit.

He is right. Do you remember the proposals for the WTC? Each was exciting in its own way and offered architecture that would become a world icon.

The process that came up with this design, dominated by Silverstein, betrayed the city by erecting a dull, corporate tower with an odd spire awkwardly tacked on so they could say the building is 1776 feet tall.

I hope the spire puts on quite a light show, but even that was compromised on to save money.

The twin towers were also dull, but having two of them side by side gave them a grandeur that this thing lacks.

I checked and the most recent plastic container I have does not have a recycle symbol.

The JCIA website simply says "plastic food containers" so I'm going to continue to put them in the recycle bin.

That's why the bridge would not carry vehicles. These access ramps are not necessary for a pedestrian bridge.

Admire your grand ambition, but have you seen the height of the cruise ships that regularly travel past JC to and from the west side of Manhattan? You'd need a 15-story tower on each side of the bridge. Kind of defeats the purpose of being able to "walk" to Manhattan when you have to wait on a block-long line of people to board some type of massive elevator first.

As for a draw-bridge-- with the sheer volume of boat traffic up and down the Hudson, it'd have to be in the "up" position 23 hours out of the day.

How much of that traffic is too high to pass under a drawbridge? When I had a view of the river it seemed like it was only the cruise ships docking on the West Side and some warships during Fleet Week that were all that large. They don't pass by that often.

Millennium Bridge in London

It is fantastic to be able to walk over a major river without vehicles rumbling by at your side. Even better, London has provided two such places to do this in the last few years. The results of these efforts, combined with the comfortable pedestrian crossings on the London, Tower, Southwark, Waterloo and Albert Bridges, has virtually brought the two sides of the Thames together. This is certainly a transformative opportunity, probably wisely foreseen by visionary planners, which will define London for the future. No city has such opportunity to reinvent itself, and these bridges, more than any other development, create the setting in which to do so.

Pedestrian and bicycle bridge from Jersey City to Manhattan?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I would like to see an iconic pedestrian bridge built between Exchange Place and the World Financial Center. A drawbridge would be ideal, but if that is not possible the bridge could be elevated on two towers with stairs/ramps and elevators. Like the 9th St HBLR station with towers on both sides.

http://www.jcfaq.com/9thst.jpg

For illustration, this bridge is in Iowa and is on a smaller scale:

http://www.zalkjosephs.com/images/pro ... edestrian/rhythm1-big.jpg

Standing at the mouth of the Hudson the bridge would need to be architecturally impressive. Iconic. We'd call it The Jersey City Bridge. It would bring attention to the city and vastly increase the value of Downtown

Who do I have to call to get this done?

Re: Council person Osborne presents Pedestrian plan

Thanks, Candice. No process is going to be perfect, but remember this is just the first step. If you are not one of the impressive 800 people consulted, and you feel you have an important point to make that none of them raised, you will have plenty of opportunity as this proposal goes through the legislative process.

Let's leave parking issues for another discussion. We are focused on pedestrian safety.

Another poster mentioned a problem that I think is directly related to safety--people parking illegally too close to intersections and blocking drivers' view of pedestrians in or about to enter the intersection and cross traffic. Fixing this problem is just a matter of enforcing existing law.

If increased enforcement doesn't solve the problem, maybe re-painting the curbs and putting new signs up will. Or increasing the fine for this offense.

Not to take anything away from JC, but that is a REALLY ODD way to evaluate/determine diversity. How is equal distribution of ethnicities indicative of diversity?

By that standard, Montreal would be considered barely diverse (with two thirds of the population being white) but it is almost universally considered one of the most diverse cities in the word!

I think it's a reasonable method considering the data they have to work with. Also, there are many ways to look at diversity. They define it by population percentages above a certain threshold. You seem to think it should be defined by the number of ethnicities who are present in the city. They are both valid ways to look at it.

The advantage of their method is that it reflects cities in which various ethnic groups cooperate in running the city because no one group dominates the others. Our current city council reflects this.

Montreal has a large variety of ethnic groups, but it 75% white (according to Wikipedia) with the remaining 25% split fairly evenly among blacks, arabs, South Asians and Chinese. That probably leads to a lot of interesting restaurants, but none of the minority groups has real power.

Even under the method of counting the number of ethnicities JC would score very high.

The diversity here is one of the things I love about JC
