Western Slope Coal concerns
#91
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Any western slope residents have anecdotes or horror stories about the PSEG Coal plant across the street at 1/9? I know that they installed $700mm of back-end clean tech but it's concerning for health reasons.

Also during Sandy when the light rail was out I drove to Bayonne sometimes to catch the bus to Wall street which took 40 min and sometimes less. Other times I caught the ferry at Port Liberte. There are plenty of reasons to dislike Bayonne but its distance from Manhattan is not one of them.

Tons of price drops = a possible motived seller.

Not all that far from 8th street light station although need to cross 440, perhaps there is an overpass walkway.

Bayonne Crossing has tons of shopping and it's near by.

Great starter home with what looks like little needed in the way of renovations (big plus considering the cost and time for dealing with contractors) - 3 car PARKING which is huge after dealing with the struggles in JC if you have more than one car.

I'd come in low @ $205k cash offer (you can always go up so start low) with no contingencies (there is a noted lead paint disclosure) after a really thorough balls to the wall home inspection with a specula and also seeing clear title ready to transfer.

It's brick and seems to have been built in the late 50's when there was still a level of craftsmanship you simply don't see today with the all the prefab crap used.

Sure it's Bayonne, considered the armpit of NJ - but it is actually a safe community with a lot of pride in homeownership there.

You should have seen Hamilton Park 25 years ago, it was rank nasty nasty.

Just food for thought.

I'm sure there are much much better deals for those who want to do the leg work and hit the ground running or pay premiums to stay in the hip area of JC.

Anyone have old pics of Hamilton Park? I tried a quick google search.

As such, they are "untouchable" and the Parking Authority will not ticket them. I am always surprised/disappointed by all the cars you see parked illegally on the corners of 2nd and Newark, and Bay and Newark. Over on Bay, you have the Keyhole Bar, next to the JCFD fire station. Always cop cars, or cars with the police badges affixed to the windshield, parked illegally on the "no parking" white lines/zones.

What about photoshopping one of those placards and putting it in our own cars? Then we could all be first among equals.

Just opened-Some kinks to work out but food is very good. Pickup only for now. I had the teriyaki bento box which was good. we also had the ribs which were were great and reasonable($4 for 2-3 large ribs), as were the potato croquettes. The Japanese style hamburger is also very good and very reasonable though be forewarned it comes without a bun. Food took a while and they ran out of a few things, but I'm fairly confident they'll figure things out in the coming weeks.

Ribs, croquettes, hamburger? Checked out the website, they also have meatball. What does any of this have to do with Japanese food?
That being said I should check it out before talking smack right.
one can get some very good ribs as well as meatballs in japan.

Of that I have no doubt, but Japanese will not consider it to be Japanese cuisine. I hope you can agree with that.

So, how was it?
Also, I remember you in the 'soleil lofts' post a couple of years ago. Did you end up moving to Newark?
I'm considering the same, the Forest Hill section. Any suggestions/wisdom to impart?

I thought it was more that hospitals charge high because they collect such a small percentage from insurance companies anyway. They might call for $17k only to get $85.
Kinda like how people slip and fall and sue for a million, then skip away with $8k.

Thanks for the list of eateries bodhi. It reminds me that I've yet to check out a little less than half of the new ones, although some have already come and gone. Perhaps I'll make it to the 4th incarnation of carrino/osteria/bell, maybe when those construction cousins are out of the picture.

Actually, when I moved in to my house 15 years ago there was no net increase in the number of people living here.

Yes. Those of us who moved here 15 years ago didn't buy new construction. We replaced outgoing residents. We didn't contribute to the surge in population, congestion, FILTH, crime, etc. Yes, there are wonderful new shops, restaurants, cultural options that didn't exist and I appreciate those, but the fact remains that the people who came here initially and paved the way for all the other more recent growth didn't want density. We wanted what JC had at that time which was convenience without the assault on our personal space that living here has become. One of the attractions of living here was the fact that you didn't have to kill someone to get on or off a train, listen to horns honking on the streets, get knocked over on the effing sidewalk when a bike came charging at you, etcetera. Living here was pleasant and quiet, and it isn't any longer. Yes, the changes have come with associated benefits too, but the lifestyle that a lot of people moved here for is gone.

Guess what, wherever you move, you don't get to preserve it amber for the rest of time. In cities of all places, you have to accept that the area could and probably will change.

I'm wading through this thread, there's so little information, mostly bickering, but I thought this was so well put. Any response?

Damn, people, all these words used and not a single thing said. Thanks for the heads up, I'll be sure to stop by and shop local.
Happy to have another option in the hood. Hope it's executed extremely well and not just coasting on their exotic German (hamburger) and French (fries) roots.

Didn't know where to put this.
Is there a legit butcher shop around Jersey City, a place where I can take deer or boar to get butchered? Not looking for a Carrino Provisions 'purveyor of meat', where they buy low and sell high; looking for actual skills.

Went there for the first time yesterday, my impressions:
small portions
tasty
expensive
cool interior design
a little too cool: couldn't read the menus by the candlelight in the booth

Would go again, not for a meal.

We decided against moving into the building. The units we were looking at were right over the garage and the internal construction seemed very flimsy indeed. As for renting out in the future, yes, in theory, you should be able to get tenants, but you can't command rent high enough to profit based on what I see them asking, even following all the price reductions that building has been through. That is, assuming you are only putting down 20%. If you are putting down 50% the equation changes and you should be ok BUT it still looks like the building is pretty deserted.

The overall area itself is fine, but I don't like that the Soleil decided against a front entrance on Montgomery. A big turnoff for me was the entrance on Boland.

I also retract my much earlier statement I made in response to icechute, regarding only being able to afford mediocrity. In this market, I was able to get a piece of splendor.

This is what I'm talking about. I wonder if there are any current tenants that are on these forums?

SOLEIL LOFTS on Montgomery

Just can't stay away

Hi, I see on Zillow that a listing at the 'Soleil Lofts' has popped up. Does anyone live there? If so, can you comment on how living conditions are, and anything you might deem pertinent to someone considering a purchase there? Thanks.

I've searched the forums and there is one thread dating back to 2011. That dates back to when the condos were preconstruction; no followup since then at all.

Municipal dump is on route 440. You can also call and arrange for curbside collection.

Thanks for the quick response. I will update this post for posterity when I use their services.

Unless others have used the municipal dump and are willing to share their experiences.

Municipal dump
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Other state residents living in different counties seem to have a municipal dump available to them to drop off personal garbage.

I've searched online and haven't been able to find anything other than the jersey city incinerator authority, which seems to have closed.

I've also searched these forums.

Is anyone aware of how to access our county municipal dump?
