In the '80s through early '90s, I recall there was a pretty depressing collection of dumpy stores just one level below street level. By the late '90s, though, they had gone noticeably upscale with more suburban shopping mall-type stores. I remember there was a Crabtree & Evelyn, Borders, Nine West and maybe Banana Republic. The PATH restrooms were located on the level between the train platform and the shops, adjacent to the saddest looking bar in the world with the saddest looking patrons. I used the restrooms on numerous occasions pre-9/11 and they were pretty clean. The odd thing was I never once saw a homeless person in there. The bar - I think it was called Commuter Bar (or something with an equal lack of imagination) - never seemed to have more than two or three patrons in there. Those who needed a stiff drink to face that PATH ride home, I suppose.

It was called the Commuter Cafe and it was a great "old man" bar. Perfect if you wanted a drink and didn't feel like leaving the bldg and walking ten mins to O'Hara's.
You could also get a drink at Akbars on that same level. Both were just before the turnstiles if I recall.

Why does anyone think downtown JC is a hipster haven when it's literally just filled with corny white people or people who have lived here for years? People cry hipster when they just want to rant about anyone remotely young because they feel out of touch and old.

How does this work?
So a buyer picks this up, decides they dont want to extend the lease, can they just take the license and walk away at the end of two years?

The science (kind of), backs up the triathalon numbers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_performance

On firm, flat ground, a 70 kg (150 lb) person requires about 60 watts [5] to walk at 5 km/h (3.1 mph). That same person on a bicycle, on the same ground, with the same power output, can travel at 15 km/h (9.3 mph) using an ordinary bicycle,[6] so in these conditions the energy expenditure of cycling is one-third of walking.

Cycling versus walking = 3:1 in terms of energy expended. Triathlon puts it at around 4:1. Right ballpark to me.

And, this is precisely what I was trying to convey in my original reply. In terms of actual effort (or, energy spent) running a marathon has a similar calorie burn as riding a century. The rule of thumb for calories / mile for running is about 130, and about 35 for riding. Those numbers are for an average male at an above-average effort (meaning, the person is pushing a bit and running or pedaling at a fairly good clip). If you do the math, 35 calories / mile times 100 miles equals 3,500 calories, while running 26.2 miles * 130 calories / mile equals ~3,400 calories. In other words, their energy expenditure is very similar.

Yes, different sports, and the physical tolls are different, but the energy spent is similar and the training and effort are definitely similar.

this is a bullshit argument.
By your logic, that same 150 lb person will burn the same amount of cals sleeping for 50 hours. Does that mean sleeping for a week is the same as running a marathon?

Meh.

Consider this: an Ironman (or other iron-distance races) consists of 2.4 miles swimming, 112 mile bike ride and a full marathon (26.2 miles). The three segments are meant to be comparable in terms of challenge/effort.

So you're saying, in your personal experience, your marathon(s) was as easy or easier than your century(ies)?

That's not why a 2.4 mile swim is a leg of an iron man, nor is it the reason 112mi is the bike portion.

From the wiki page:
"The idea for the original Ironman Triathlon arose during the awards ceremony for the 1977 Oahu Perimeter Relay...

...debating which athletes were more fit, runners or swimmers...

...the debate should be settled through a race combining the three existing long-distance competitions already on the island: the Waikiki Roughwater Swim (2.4 mi./3.86 km), the Around-Oahu Bike Race (115 mi./185.07 km; originally a two-day event) and the Honolulu Marathon (26.219 mi./42.195 km)."

It's almost universally agreed that 26.2 takes a bigger toll on the body than 100 miles in the saddle.

I would say a century ride (100 miles) is about equivalent to a marathon in terms of effort, and training.

not really...a relatively fit weekend warrior cyclist can go out and do a century without any special training.

The only way a century is comparable to the marathon is in the ceremonial sense.

A century seems more like a half marathon. Of course the amount of climbing would have to be taken into consideration.

Admittedly this is trivial but...

Since P&K is now gonna have lines like a Manhattan Trader Joes, people should know that there is one line for both registers and it runs along the wall. The sons are too nice to tell people standing at the second register that they're in the wrong spot, so that person ultimately cuts the line.

Scam/con artist in the Shoprite parking lot this afternoon

Gypsy woman. Well dressed with big sunglasses and her two kids, son about 8 years old walking with her and daughter about 3 or 4 in the shopping cart.

Walked up to me with what looked like a credit card with a receipt wrapped around it inner hand as I was walking to my car and used the typical, "I'm so sorry, could you help me? My kids and I..." I didn't even let her finish. Just told her no, not today and walked away. Looked back after walking a few feet and she had already moved on to her next mark. I thought of yelling out to the dude she was working but he was already pulling out his wallet, so I said fuck it and packed my car. Before I was done loading she was already working two other guys.

So including me, she hit up 4 people in less than five minutes.

My bike is definitely "no tears", probably why no one even bothers to look and see that it's a cylinder. My son's bike would have been like $800 new, and he'd be very sad to see it go.

Once you decide on a lock, make sure your son knows how to use it.

I've seen so many bikes with expensive locks incorrectly secured.

Like, not even close. There is someone at my office that has a Evo mini-9 and uses it to fasten the rack to the front tire and one side of the fork...AND the bike has quick release tires. One day I'm going to find just the tire locked to the rack.

serious question

at what point does an unlocked bike at a bike rack become abandoned? I've seen a bike in a rack for a week now that has two flats, no seat and isn't locked. Aside from that, it's in okay condition and with a little love could be a pretty good beater bike.

What I don't understand is why the ferry service is so expensive. A ferry can be bought for the cost of one or 2 subway cars ($1.28 million each, cost of ferries) , and you don't need track, electric supply or signaling, just 2 docks. Ferry used to be the ONLY way to cross the Hudson, and I doubt it cost the equivalent of buying lunch a century ago. I can't find any data on historic ferry fares. But it is worth noting how NYC provides free ferry service to Staten I in order to promote it's economy. But the PA and the NJ governors could care less about the economy of Hudson County.

Did I miss something? Was there a rule change about parking on weekends? A friend's car was towed on Sunday which was otherwise parked legally. This was not a metered spot.
No explanation on ticket other than "unlawfully parked"

If there was no rule change, what are the chances of fighting this? $54 ticket plus $115 for the pound.
