Re: Jersey City plan requiring 30-hour workweek minimum

That's ridiculous. My condo building has 50 or more units. If we have to pay our part-time porter as if he is working 30-hours a week we will just fire him and have our current full-time super pick up the responsibilities and pay the Super a little more. Our part-time porter was doing this job as a source of supplemental income for his full-time job. Now he is SOL.

You know this guy. He fancies himself an elevated thinker and attempts to prove it by repeatedly parroting terms like ?straw man? and ?ad hominem,? no matter the context. Be careful, you?re dealing with a master debater?on a good day, he speaks eight words of Latin.

His profile pic is a CGI swordsman and his cover photo an homage to ?Fallout 4,? which he?s already beaten despite its release just weeks ago. Exactly. It's this type of insidious crap that makes it such a struggle to start a business.

Somehow I don't think the "assessment" imposed on businesses within the SID is voluntary. It's another tax with purported benefits that may or may not materialize.

Even if that's true it's still more money in the pockets for those that earned it which is always a good thing.

I think The Brunswick School is great. One thing that I like about it that other schools might not have is its private parking lot which makes it a lot easier to bring our children via car when we decide to do so (usually we walk). I also like how it has its own private outdoor play area. Some schools don't have that. I also like how they have their own washer/dryer for washing the children's clothes if it is necessary. I like the way they work on potty training when the time for that training comes. I like the cleanliness, the openness, and the brightness of the facility. I like how they don't follow the holiday/vacation schedule of the Jersey City public schools which means that when other schools are closed they are open. I like the food they prepare on-site in their own kitchen for the children. And the management/teachers have been a pleasure to work with.

It's worth noting as well that the artists need somebody to buy their art. They need people to pay for tickets to their performances. In other words artists willingly attract the people with the disposable income necessary to fund their artistic endeavors. While the artists lament gentrification they are the direct cause of it via their desire to make a buck.

Re: Fulop and the ‘Fight for Fifteen’
Home away from home

The first minimum wage laws were pushed by democrats to protect the low-skilled jobs of whites back in the early century. This was because when blacks started to enter the workforce in large numbers they undercut the wages that whites were already getting in various types of low-skilled jobs. The white workers complained. So democratic politicians pushed for minimum wage laws so that it was impossible for blacks to offer their services at a lower price then whites. The result was that the unemployment rate for blacks grew much higher than that of whites.

The unemployment rate of blacks when compared to whites has been growing ever since - in lock-step with each increase in the minimum wage.

Clearly the minimum wage has done nothing but hurt the people its proponents "say" it helps. The only thing it has been good at is getting votes for politicians like Fulop.

That's the problem with these liberals. They're all against racism unless it's detrimental to their favored race. Equality indeed.

All I know is that Jersey City used to be full of factories decades ago. Then all the jobs went overseas to follow the cheap labor. It's nice to see a factory starting in Jersey City. Even if it is just cheesecakes. What the hell, we had a matzoh factory nearby until recently.

Diversity is overrated. Unnatural diversity forced by government fiat is just plain awful. Wow, how great it is for McNair to force this orchestrated diversity just so its students can go home each day to their own seperate sections. Not to mention how McNair's admission policies embrace the soft racism of low expectations.

Fulop et al should stop campaigning for higher minimum wages. In fact it should be lowered so that the type of people that find themselves carrying illegal guns can be offered jobs at salaries commensurate with their skill set. They will be off the streets and on their way to climbing that proverbial career ladder. They'll learn how to make a living doing honest labor. Right now they can't get a foot in the door since they are priced out of the labor market.

Not at all. The NJ Advance Media inquiry shows exactly the opposite. It shows there was in fact a considerable "base" for Trump's statements. What was baseless was Fulop's (and everyone else's contention) that NOBODY in Jersey City celebrated.

That is an extremely good explanation of what tax abatements are and their true effect on Jersey City's finances. It also explains why no matter how much a politician will rail against abatements, when push comes to shove, they will embrace them. Our city is drunk on abatements.

Marketers found out that sex sells merchandise a long time ago.

At some point over the last 20 years or so they found out that guilt sells merchandise just as well. Especially when it comes to products / services for children.

"A white lady sitting out front drinking tea has a different cultural reading for a lot of people than the very wonderful Puerto Rican men who hang out on my street all day."

But it is amusing if this author thinks anyone takes any of this tripe seriously. I suppose he should distribute it in JC though. After all, we could always use more toilet paper.

You're absolutely right. Out-and-out racist. And what's remarkable about it is how many people have been indoctrinated with this affirmative action mentality to such an extent that they can't see it.

What? Have you been living under a selective rock or something? The Hoboken St. Paddy's Day has been rightly singled out by residents and politicians as untenable over recent years. It has been roundly and correctly criticized by everyone. Major steps have been taken to address the issue.

So comparing the Puerto Rican festival to the Hoboken St. Paddy's Day for similarity purposes is dumb, dumb, dumb. People only defend the Puerto Rican festival due to the soft bigotry of low expectations. The Hoboken St. Paddy's Day festival doesn't enjoy the immunity provided by such bigotry, thankfully.

Re: Condo Board or Management decision?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I am on my condo board as well. While it's attractive for the board members to take the road that they should leave it in the hands of the property manager because that is their job I have found that in practice this tactic fails. It fails primarily because the property manager simply does not have the passion to treat the problem with the required tenacity. It has been my experience that it requires the board members to step up and address the issue proactively themselves. Like the old saying goes - if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Unless you want to settle for it being done in a half-assed manner which is a valid option as well.

That's nice but it's important to point out that if the plaintiff is a homeowner within the community then they are essentially suing themselves since the plaintiff will be on the hook for their share of whatever cash has to be paid by the condo association including any legal defense fees.

The simple fact is that jersey city residents, in general, do not pay their fair share of taxes.
But they'll rail against all the other people that don't pay their fair share.

JCGuys, I have been saying this for years. During the 1990s at an abatement hearing, I said the state might raise our contributions to the Board of Ed, then our payments were frozen at $72 million. The people in the administration laughed and said I was exaggerating. Well, in 2005, the state allowed the contribution to rise and we are now paying $112 million. That is $40 million more in 10 years. I can easily see the state saying we must pay $120 million more. This is the reason I am against affordable housing. It brings in more school age children and the families do not contribute to the school system via abatements. Also, it is a federal list who gets these homes, it is not JC residents.

Yvonne I think you are the only one that pays attention to details around here. Kudos to you.
