It will interesting to see whether more houses go up for sale as a result of this.

It is a good thing everyone does not think that way because there would be anarchy.

Other people break the law, so I can too. Or the police don't arrest that jay walker, so why should I put my dog on a leash! Murderers get away with murder everyday, so why should I get in trouble for anything!

There is a temptation to fall into that kind of thinking when we are frustrated, but to give in to that temptation would be dangerously uncivil.

Re: A Case Study in What's wrong with JC Real Estate:

Your parents now have a home they probably will not lose, in addition to an option to scaling down into something smaller requiring less work and expense.

During the 30 years they lived in the house, they may have taken some joy in the chores you list, knowing they provided a home for their family where they celebrated birthdays graduations, anniversaries, family barbeques, long discussions about the direction of their children's lives, a warm room to sit by their kids when they were sick with chicken pox, the flu etc. Of course someone who rents can still enjoy much of these things, but may be subject to eviction or disruptions by a landlord or any other insecurity that comes with renting.

Also, they may have some solace in the thought that they have a substantial asset to leave to their children and perhaps grand children.

You are correct in pointing out that the $200,000 gains may be diminished to some degree by interest paid, expenses associated with repairs and maintenance. But please do not forget the years of tax benefits they enjoyed by paying the mortgage interest and real estate taxes.

If they had rented over the years they wouldn't have the capital to move into a smaller house at no expense to them; nor an estate to leave behind. They have created a greater sense of security for themselves and their families that renting just would not have provided.

I understand that perhaps at this point in your life, particularly with this dubious economy, purchasing a home may seem overwhelming. Just don't totally discount it as something to strive for.

So you're saying my neighbors want to be treated like children or criminals and are seeking the attention of government oversight to be the slightest bit considerate to their neighbors and others around them?

I am not sure what you mean by your last post; but the reality is this thread is basically about the dangers of dogs off leash. Not about children climbing trees. Other people's infractions, crimes, torts, civil misbehavior , etc. etc. do not justify allowing one's dog to run off leash in Hamilton Park or any other place in JC, other than designated dog runs. That argument is a little like saying since some people let their dogs run off leash I should be allowed to rob houses or banks or commit some other crime. Still any defense of permitting a dog to run off leash remains absurd and offensive to others in addition to the local law. There are dangers associated to allowing one's dog run off leash. Ignoring that will eventually result in an unfortunate ordeal.

It's really not appropriate to say there has ever been a witch-hunt for EVERY dog in Hamilton Park or any dog for that matter, merely because many residents have been imploring their neighbors to keep their dogs leashed in compliance with the law. Also, I don't know of any movement against leashed dogs.

Additionally, to say there has been NO incident since last year's pit-bull incident is not correct. There just hasn't been an incident of the heightened publicity or perhaps severity.

As an example, just last Friday night some off leash little white dog, fled the park, despite his owner calling for him and ran across 8th street into what appeared to be his home. Fortunately, the dog missed getting hit by a car by about 2 feet. But that was merely good luck.

On a regular basis there are poorly behaved off leash dogs that bark at adults, children and other dogs, making the targets of the barking more than just a little uncomfortable.

One evening last week a few unleashed dogs followed my dog and I into the tennis court that seconds as a dog run. I was hoping the owners would have followed us in, so my dog would have had some playmates. Instead, one owner came to take her dog out and said to me, "You don't get fined for keeping your dog off leash in the winter. They only come and get you in the spring." I did not invite her comment nor suggest she leash her dog. Which is why I was so astonished she would invite me to break the law.

If people would keep their dogs leashed, perhaps new comers would not consider it permissible to let their dangerous dogs off leash and the pit-bull incident of last year never would have happened. Any excuse or spinning to justify keeping your dog unleashed is laughably absurd.

All the people who knew nothing of the incidents tried to make it about everyone else except the actual culprit. It became a witch-hunt for every dog in Hamilton Park. The hysterics eventually died down and there have been NO incidents in HP since. It comes down to indivuals people. This owner was stupid. The dogs are doomed. Case closed. Stop projecting.

Last evening some friends of mine and I went to the White Star for burgers and beers. Our waiter, the tall thin guy, covered all of the tables himself, and they were all occupied. This guy worked hard, got all the food out timely, was attentive and never seemed the slightest bit out of control. He is totally the standard for all waiters in this town.

A long time ago there was a retail chain called the Merry Go Round. I would occasionally shop at the Willowbrook Mall where their sales people would literally try to physically pull people into their store as they passed by.

While I agree that people stopping you to ask, "Can I ask you a question?" is annoying, it's easy to just ignore or quickly say no and keep walking.

I agree this did sound like a terrible and an inexcusably negligent ordeal.

But why would anyone have stayed on the train or even boarded at Christopher St? The safest alternative would have been to hop in a cab. While it's a little expensive, probably about $60, it sounds like it would have been worth it for this occurrence.

But we will have be having our annual Halloween parade and party in the park this year on Sunday, October 26th at 3:00 pm.

Re: police cars at Hamilton Park

The police escorted one of the two women (the woman who wears or carries the camel colored coat) into the ambulance. She was perfectly able to walk her self. She looked a bit confused and curious as to what was going on. I asked two of the officers what actually happened. One replied but didn't give too many details, but said they were responding to a call, and they were bringing her in to make sure she was ok. The invited the other woman to go along but she refused.

He went on further to say, there is nothing that could be done about someone in the park during the day, so long as they aren't bothering anyone else. But I did advise him they actually sleep there over night, which surprised him. The police have been advised of their presence before. But I have to imagine someone saw them sleeping a long time today and grew concerned.

While I find it odd that someone would be brought in for a "check up" I am sort of relieved and hope this is the first step towards getting this woman some help.

Re: Robbery near Mercer and Varick

I was using the definition I recalled from law school, which is what is commonly referred to as the multi state definition. Of course it's been modified. In fact, the offense originally had to be committed at night to be considered a burglary. Naturally each state is going to have their own particular definition of it, though I suspect most closely resemble each other and I would doubt any of them require the "night time" component.

Actually, a burglary is the breaking and entering of a dwelling with the intent to commit a felony. The felony need not be a theft offense. Quote:

Re: Joan Moore

This is a significant loss to the neighborhood. Joan was one of the very early members of the Hamilton Park Neighborhood Assoc. and truly committed to the community. When Jack Swallow (sp?) was found murdered, she and her partner along with other neighbors, were active in his search which resulted in his body being found. She and her planted the big Christmas tree in his honor that you see on the corner of 8th and W. Hamilton. For years they would string lights on it around Christmas time.

The HPNA has recently archived a host of news articles and other materials in the Pavonia branch of the JC public library, for all to peruse through. There you will find news clippings and pictures of Joan and co, from the early days as the worked to improve the quality of life in the HP neighborhood.

Re: Hudson Catholic Regional High School is due to CLOSE its doors on June 23

Hmmm, I don't know how many child molestation cases the Newark Archdiocese has had to defend. My anecdotal observations, lead me to believe there haven't been a lot of it mentioned in the papers. Certainly not compared to other dioceses, like Boston, New York or even nearby Patterson. Still I don't know that any money donated by the Nets would be as much as the Archdiocese already has. I have to imagine they put the proceeds from the sale of the original seminary, which was up in Mahwah. Granted that sale was in 1988, but I suspect it was invested. At any rate, while I'm all for conspiracy theories, this element of yours doesn't seem so realistic.

Speaking of Father Hanbury, he was a religion teacher at SHP when I was a student there. I just mention that as a piece of trivia. I haven't actually seen him since I graduated from Seton Hall U. Other than when his picture appears in the Alumni magazine I occasionally receive. I think he may have gone to Hudson Catholic with Father Jack Duran, another Jersey City native.

In line with his great basketball team, he has also gathered financial backing from the New Jersey Nets - enough backing to buy the lease for Hudson Catholic so the Archdiocese can focus on the covering up of child molestation allegations rather than the education of it's children.

Fr. Kevin Hanbury was the Director of the Catholic Schools Leadership Program at Seton Hall University. It was the program where I attained my Masters. Ironically, he oversaw the closing of dozens of Catholic schools in our area. He is ALSO a good friend of Bob Hurley.

Re: Hudson Catholic Regional High School is due to its doors on June 23
Home away from home

It's funny, I long disassociated myself from the Catholic church. But I do feel a little sad to hear about the closing of Hudson Catholic. I went to Seton Hall Prep.. another all boys school run by the Newark Archdiocese. I don't think they're having such a problem with attendance or finances. Of course they have had a good athletic program for a long time, which I suspect draws in students and dollars. Still I have fond memories of my time at SHP and the friendships I made there. Like Croft, I do believe there are some benefits to an all boys or girls school. Of course there are fewer social stresses since you're only there for about 6 hours a day 5 days a week. This leaves plenty of time to socialize with members of the opposite sex. Often these schools have sister and brother schools, hosting socials with each other and inviting the students from the other schools to participate in plays and other activities. Our sister schools were Mary Lawn of the Oranges and Mt. St. Dominic Academy in W. Caldwell. Alas, I digress.

What I don't understand is why the Archdiocese would allow a school to close, while we have so many churches so close to each other downtown. Without being intimately familiar with the finances, I would suspect there would be a way of streamlining the parishes and aligning them with the schools to help keep the financial house in order and cultivate the area where the church could actually serve the people.

Hudson Catholic seems to be a decent school. I had some college classmates from there. I hope things work out.

But a few years before I started SHP, (1978) St. Benedict's Prep. had closed. But it reopened about 10 years after it closed. So perhaps there's hope for Hudson Catholic. Maybe someone should speak to the development people at St. Benedict's to get some ideas as to how they raised the money to reopen.

Well my sympathies to the Hudson Catholic Alum and students.

Re: Please clean up your dog poop...
Home away from home
Home away from home

Interestingly enough people do get fined for not shoveling their sidewalk after it snows. I happen to know one neighbor who was fined when we had a mere dusting. NID is more inclined and able to issue citations for some of the other violations you mentioned than animal control or the police are willing to cite people for leash law violations.

What's causing the concern and the petition around the dogs off leash issue, isn't only the poop, but that it places many people in fear that they, their children or their dogs may be attacked by someone's off leash dog. My dog was attacked by an off leash dog his first week in HP last spring. Still you have to keep in mind that many people are simply afraid of dogs, and it doesn't help the rapport between the dog owners and non dog owners to keep your dog off leash, even if your dog is friendly.

The downtown area is becoming increasingly dense with new folks moving in. The only way to facilitate a neighborhly co-existence is for folks to be more mindful of their neighbors and the decreasing amount of space and bandwidth. I don't mean only in terms of the dog issue either, but as you mentioned such other matters as garbage disposal, keeping the front of your house clean, being thoughtful when doing construction, when entertaining, parking ( i.e. some folks have parking spots and still park on the street), etc. etc.
