NEW JERSEY (FOX5NY.COM) - Municipal officials in Jersey City, New Jersey, haven't taken a look at property values in 30 years. It means some have been paying more in taxes than they should and others have been paying less. And trying to fix the problem has created another mess.

Dolores Renner, a resident of 74 years, is so afraid for her future that she was speechless. She learned that her taxes

are doubling to more than $20,000 a year. She said she can't pay that much and now worries

blah, blah, blah you all knew it was coming. I left downtown because I knew I would not be able to afford the new tax hike. I expect my taxes here to go down, I will no longer be subsidizing taxes for the millionaires club. Move to Texas if you want cheap taxes.

Jersey City puts end to police officers working off-duty jobs

JERSEY CITY -
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop has pledged to put an end to city police officers working off-duty jobs in the wake of a corruption scandal within the department for doing just that.

Fulop made the announcement on Twitter Tuesday. He says that the median income for a Jersey City police officer is about $100,000. He says that some officers were able to make double or triple that amount by working off-duty jobs.

Fulop says that his issue is that corrupt police officers have been defrauding the city by filling out and submitting time sheets for off-duty work that they never actually did.

?We don?t think that the stain that this program has put on the reputation of the city is something that should continue,? Fulop says. ?We?re going to eliminate it.?

Mortal Again: Christie Blocked at VIP Entrance to Newark Airport

Meet Chris Christie, former New Jersey governor and current nobody at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The two-term Republican, who left office on Jan. 16, was blocked from a VIP entrance he had used for eight years, and directed to stand in Transportation Security Administration screening lines at Terminal B like anyone else, according to a person familiar with the incident.

The order came from police for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, according to the person, who wasn?t authorized to speak publicly about security matters. The Port Authority also operates the George Washington Bridge, the target of a plot by Christie aides and allies to tie up traffic for political punishment in 2013.

Murphy Signs Order Combating Gender Inequality
Home away from home
Home away from home

By PHIL GREGORY

Just hours after being inaugurated, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed his first executive order. It promotes equal pay for women.

Murphy says the order prohibits any effort by a state agency to ask a job applicant about their wage history.

?Here and now we begin the process of bulldozing the roadblocks that have kept women from being paid fairly, that have kept many women of color from fulfilling their dreams of entering the middle class and that have allowed our wage gap to persist.?

Female lawmakers who attended the signing ceremony praised Murphy?s action.

Senator Sandra Cunningham says the executive order shows the state will treat women with dignity and respect.

?We have to be a state in which we are judged not by the color of our skin, not by our gender, but by our qualifications. And this says that is what we are going to do.?

Assemblywoman Joann Downey is thrilled Murphy made the executive order his first official action.

?We?ve been crawling, especially when it comes to women?s rights and to making sure that we have pay equity. But now with a Governor like Phil Murphy we are going to fly.?

Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt hopes lawmakers can work with Murphy on additional pay equity issues. She favors allowing women to recover back pay for inequitable salaries.

?We need women to be paid for what they?ve worked whether or not it was yesterday, or whether or not it was five years ago. So it?s vitally important that we continue this particular effort.?

Former Governor Chris Christie vetoed legislation that would have allowed a worker who was paid an inequitable salary to recover back pay for an unlimited number of years. He said it should be limited to going back two years as required by federal law.

Clerk gets doused in hot coffee, foils robbery anyway

JERSEY CITY -
Police say a gas station clerk in Jersey City trapped a woman in his store after she dumped a pot of hot coffee on him and swiped money from the register.

Authorities say 42-year-old Alicia Harris has been charged with robbery and receiving stolen property in the Wednesday incident at the Exxon Station near 14th Street and Marin Boulevard.

A Port Authority police spokesman says the clerk was able to keep Harris inside the store by jamming the door shut with his foot. Police say she still had the coffee pot in her hand when officers arrived but was arrested without a struggle and found to have more than $360 in her pants.

Officials say that Harris was also wanted on a $2,000 warrant also out of Jersey City.

It wasn't immediately clear if she has hired a defense attorney. Authorities say she's being held in the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.

Liberty State Park to begin accepting picnic table reservations Monday
Home away from home

By The Jersey Journal
JERSEY CITY -- While a legal battle has erupted over a proposed marina plan, Liberty State Park is accepting applications to reserve picnic tables and pavilions for spring.

The applications -- there is a fee for the pavilion, but not for open air picnics -- will open Monday.

Advocates for the park have been fighting against a plan that would allow a Texas-based company to add a second marina that would stretch about a mile long on the southern end of the park. The marina would be privately operated and the proposed lease with the state would allow the company to open a restaurant.

Jersey City filed a lawsuit to halt the controversial plan, alleging the state illegally enter into agreement with the company that would operate the marina. A judge ordered a temporary hold and a hearing is scheduled for Jan. 16.

Some of the picnic spaces available for reservation are along the waterfront where the marina would be added. State officials say the plans would not affect any reservations this spring.

The applications can be found online.

JERSEY CITY - A man was shot multiple times at a Downtown gas station on Tuesday night, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at the Sunoco gas station at Grand and Center streets at about 9:30 p.m., city spokeswoman Kim Scalcione said. The victim was seriously injured, but has since been upgraded to stable condition, she said.

Photos from the scene show police focusing their investigation around the gas attendant booth in the center of the station. Multiple sources say the shooting is likely connected to the New Year's Day killing of 23-year-old Taiwon Robinson.

JERSEY CITY -- The new year got off to a violent start in Jersey City, with one man killed and another injured in shootings during the first hours of 2018.

Four shootings were reported between 2 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday, city spokeswoman Kimberly Scalcione said.

The first shooting occurred at about 2:15 a.m. on Washington Boulevard near Newport Mall and no injuries were reported.

A few hours later, a 44-year-old man was shot three times in the abdomen near Martin Luther King Drive and Virginia Avenue. The victim was allegedly involved in a bar fight with someone he did not know before he was shot, Scalcione said.

At about 6:30 a.m., 23-year-old Taiwon Robinson was shot in the head near Montgomery and Brunswick streets. He was brought to the hospital where he died, authorities previously announced.

In the final shooting of the day, a resident walked into the West District to report a car had been damaged near Martin Luther King Drive and Warner Avenue. Police recovered shell casings from the intersection, Scalcione said.

Photos of the scene show at least 13 shell casings were located. Last month, a 28-year-old was fatally shot in the same spot where the shell casings were recovered.

Jersey City school teachers say they can’t afford to live in city..

JERSEY CITY, NJ ? Teachers in Jersey City could be on the verge of a strike after a year of work without a new contract.

Hundreds of teachers showed up at a Thursday school board meeting. They're frustrated and want their voices heard.

Payments for rising health insurance premiums have come out of their pockets at a time when salaries have been going down. Some teachers make less today than they did 10 years ago, Jersey City teacher Kristen Zadroga-Hart said.

"No teacher comes in to the profession thinking they?re going to get rich. We come in to make a difference in our community and our children?s lives," Zadroga-Hart said. "That being said, we need to have a livable wage. We can?t afford to live in Jersey City anymore."

Re: pre-paying 2018 taxes

By Terrence T. McDonald tmcdonald@jjournal.com
The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY -- Calling the sweeping tax overhaul approved by Congress yesterday "hurtful to working families," Jersey City today said it will allow residents to prepay their entire 2018 estimated tax bills this year if they want to try to take advantage of a deduction the bill has curtailed.

Property taxes are now entirely deductible, but starting next year taxpayers will only be able to deduct up to $10,000. Residents in high-tax states like New Jersey have been flooding local tax collectors with calls asking to prepay their taxes this year so they can attempt to deduct them when they file their 2017 tax returns in April.

Jersey City had initially said it would cap prepayments of next year's bill to two quarters -- a limit other New Jersey municipalities have -- but Mayor Steve Fulop, a Democrat, said he decided today to allow residents to pay all four quarters this year.

IMHO? I see nothing wrong with a rubber stamp City Council when you have the right forward thinking leader at the top. I don?t think there has been a bad decision made in the last 4 years by Mayor Fulop and his City Council. Everything they passed moved the city one step forward.

Yes sometimes rubber stamp City Councils are bad look at what we had with Healy. He had a rubber stamp City Council for close to 9 years. Bad leader at the top bad or no results from the City Council. (GIGO) I recall the Healy controlled City Council with Council President Peter Brennan passing an ordinance to shut then Councilman Fulop down. I think it was dubbed the anti-Fulop ordinance. It stated that an ordinance couldn?t be reintroduced again for 6 months after it was voted down. (which most of Councilman Fulop?s fresh ideas were at the time) A perfect example of a bad rubber stamp City Council.

Are those constant NO votes from Yun* and Boggiano (the NO-bbie brothers) really because they are just ?looking out for JC residents? or are they just to show that they are Independents and screw it if it slows down Mayor Fulop?s vision for JC? Hmm funny their two Wards seem to be benefiting the most from the other Council members YES votes especially Ward C. From looking at the vote tallies from November 7th I think it is pretty clear we all trust what Mayor Fulop and his City Council are doing for our city. Why tie up progress with a chorus of NO votes.

*I don?t think Mo had a chance in Ward D against Yun?how can you compete with getting Christmas and Birthday cards from the bow-tied Crusader?.err?Independent. (Gee I even put them on my mantel thanks Mike ...lol)

.

Sorry as a resident of Ward A the mayors last pick was an embarrassment to this ward. Frank Gajewski has not done anything for the ward. All he has done is voted on giving abatement's to Journal Square and downtown. He is useless, and because of that I would never vote for the mayors pick.
