I've driven to these neighborhoods near LSP it is not advisable to have a woman or anyone to just go their at their own risk. sorry but i've been living in JC all my life to know how these areas are.

I'm a woman and I have lived here a while. The only neighborhood I avoid at all costs is Ocean Ave and Neptune and round those parts. Scary as hell. Would not drive thru there in an armored car with police escort.

As for the rest of the city, it's a block by block thing (old time listers in the house!). Use your best judgement. Stay calm and don't panic.

I'm getting super uncomfortable with this theory that people can't go anywhere outside their safe downtown vicinity -- ooh, too scary, stay where it's safe, gangs! gangs! gangs! It perpetuates the already crappy attitude about our city and it also creates what I consider an unnecessary wave of panic about anything remotely urban.

Listen, I love my safe little VVP enclave, don't get me wrong. And I wouldn't advise just dawdling around areas you don't know, since that's just asking for trouble. But let's stop making this sounds like the scariest place on earth because that's unfair.

Except Ocean Avenue. AVOID.

You are making this up. Gangbangers? Lined up along the street? Always? I cannot accept this is true.

I have driven to LSP countless times over the years and never once felt unsafe. And I'm sort of a chicken.

I said "round trip", and even Googlemaps puts the Union store at 24 minutes, which is assuming none of the traffic nonsense that is guaranteed on roads like 22, 3, or especially Tonnele.

Have you ever seen me drive?

In any case, the drive is still totally worth it for what you can find at Costco.

As far as I can figure, they've redlined Hudson County. There's stores in Union, Clifton and Hackensack, even Red Hook Brooklyn and LIC for Gods sake! Maybe they figure if you've got the money to spend, you'll drive the hr round trip.

Why does an HISTORIC BUILDING that's on the National Register of Historic Places have to be torn down to accomodate a request for open space where there are acres of parking lots and undeveloped parcels adjacent to the historic building? And when your landlord has been utterly irresponsible in his failure to provide open space?

In answer to the heading of this thread, I say we chain Xerxes inside the building all winter. Doesn't do much in the long-term, but it'd sure be fun.

i know it's difficult for you to comprehend a well planned neighborhood considering the ghetto you live in. But do realize not everyone prefers to live next to an abandoned warehouse like you. A residential area requires some green space, which is lacking in that area surrounded by all the supposely luxury high rises.

There is nothing "historical" about an empty shell of a factory. And if you tried to read this thread instead of making more pointless diatribes about chaining xerex inside (wtf?), you will realize most of us who actually do live there dont mind if the building is kept and turned into some retail/art gallery, if it's not green. We just dont want an abandoned factory that is about to collapse...

and seriously 160 posts in 1 month since you joined? i know it's difficult to walk outside from your jailceil of a home, but do take it easy on the inter web will ya....

/douche off

yikes wibbit. douch? indeed.

the building is part of JC history. it's really cool looking and about the only thing of any architectural interest over there (sorry if that's where you live but that's my opinion). i'd love to see it turned into a multi-use venue that could really benefit the larger community and create more appeal for the waterfront. more green space will just be filled with dog poop anyway.

as for how long it's taking? it's JC. plus these things take time. i'm psyched to see how it turns out. seems like the point of no turning back, what with all the PATH ads and all.

and again, yikes.

A few weeks ago, I was on the corner of Montgomery and Jersey. There was a police cruiser waiting at the traffic light going north on Jersey. Just as the light changed green for the traffic on Jersey, a car ran the red light going east on Montgomery. I looked at the cop, who leaned forward to look at the car that ran the red light, then he looked at me, and then he continued north.

So the simple answer seems to be no. Maybe he was on another call, maybe he had other pressing business, or maybe he really didn't care.

Sadly, there are a lot of cops out there who do their job well and care about the people and their city, but there are also a handful of other cops that don't care and are there just to earn a check. Then again, aren't all jobs like that.

i just got stuck thru two lights on Marin because a transit cop car was stopped in the middle of the street on the double line. when i finally got to drive past her, she seemed to be texting on her cell phone.

sweet.

And the all time favorite "If you don't like the ----- in this city, you should move to the leafy suburbs" Yea, those are all pretty cool by us.

If things were phrased this way however, the entire pc coalition gets their panties up in a bunch over it:
"gosh, I wish those poor people would just stay in montgomery projects and not come to OUR side of town" or "the welfare collectors are so annoying, why don't they all just shop at path mark"..."If you don't like that Jersey City is gentrifying, you should move to Allentown PA".

you are fighting an imaginary enemy. this "pc coalition" as you call us? does. not. exist.

what does exist are a growing group of people on this board who share some common concerns and points of view. the fact that it sometimes doesn't agree with yours doesn't make it some big spooooky conspiracy.

and for the record, since you seem so obsessesed with us:

i'm a yuppie. i am ok with whoever wants to come to the beer garden as long as they don't get drunk and puke on me. i have no real opinion on white guys/asian girls, just love who you love. hipsters are overrated. i hate that there are poor people in montgomery gardens because that seems like a shitty place to have to live and it's a bummer to drive by. i avoid pathmark at all costs because it's gross. if you don't like it here, you totally should move because life is short.

and i'm hardly PC. nor are some of the others you keep labeling that. unless PC = awesome, in which case, fo sho.

so now you know. relax and stop hating.

PS; i think Tayari is full of sh*t and the whole bogus deputy mayor position as it serves now should be eliminated.

The sad thing is that I agree with much of your assessment of Tayari's record, i just hate seeing a legitimate position undermined by overzealous kooks. As you're fond of saying, I think we can all agree there is plenty to take Tayari to task for without resorting to lame race jokes. FO SHO.

And I find it particularly disturbing when folks scream racism where there is none, but rather there is real anger and outrage about a government takeover of the private sector and people's lives. I stand by my statements. It isn't racial. It's true disgust for the current political tactics. FO SHO.

I actually see your point, SkepticalHook. You are making your statement based on your own experience. You have a right to your opinion, fo sho.

I think the problem is the consistency of anger and vitriol in your posts across this site. When you keep yelling at people who question your opinion and attacking their responses, it's easy to see why people may question your position. Would that you would show the same respect in tone and approach as if so often showed to you.

I guess I should be happy that the store is never crowded, but on the other hand, I don't want to see the place go under.

Since you asked.... Every time I go to MW I end up with products that are about to expire. Yes, I know, i could check the expiration date before I throw it in my car, and I try to, but inevitably something sneaks by. Something yummy that distracts me so I forget to look at the date.

I'm not talking 3-5 days till expiration. I'm talking THAT DAY.

Maybe it's just crappy luck but it's not worth it to me to have to dig around the products trying to find something with a little bit of a shelf life left in it.

But beyond that, yes, it's a great store, nice parking, good products, etc.

Jenny,

come on. Thats not an apt comparison. I agree that everyone should leash their dog, but the last time I checked, the number of fatalities related to drunk driving outnumbers the dog leash fatalities by alot. Aren't you being a tad overdramatic? Jaywalking is illegal too, and I can assume you may have done that once in your life.

That being said, this guy has a serious problem. I think I saw him near the Path this morning. Had a gold chain on? Not the bald dude. This guy looked like Bob the neighbor on That 70's show.

And No, It certainly is NOT the husky guy spoken of earlier.
He NEVER, EVER has his dogs off leash and does not have attack dogs.

There is a guy who lives near Hamilton Pk. with a Jindo. I talk to him all the time and he would never sic his dog on anyone. His dog is very well trained but I have never seen it go after anyone or anything. No he doesn't use a leash but thats another story as the dog is very well disciplined. The guy the OP writes about must be someone else and I would hate to see a lynch mob going after the wrong guy. The guy I know understands the implications of doing something so stupid.

I am also well disciplined. Does this mean I can drive drunk? Steal from the bank? Shoot people? NOPE. Because like having a dog off-leash, these things are ILLEGAL.

The fact that this guy walks his dog near the police department makes it particularly infuriating.

I'm not "deciding" anything. I'm trying to turn aside the argument that no one can say anything in a public forum that might hurt the feelings of the man's family and friends. With all due respect to them, this is a story that affects us all and they are just going to have to deal with it.

As for "judging," how exactly am I doing that? The man was indicted. That is a fact. Mentioning it is not "judging" him We don't all live in glass homes, you know, especially when it comes to bribery and public corruption. I'll take my chances that expressing anger at the corruption of my public officials will not come back to haunt me. Thanks for your concern.

But to cast such a hateful tone over the death of one of them? Beyond.

You did more than express anger over the corruption. You tainted a story with your own projections. The fact that others did too doesn't make it right. It makes it even more scummy and sickening.
