Re: What is wrong with the people driving in JC?

The best is the people in their Honda's without mufflers who speed down the streets and honk 100 ft. from the stop sign and plow right through it. I guess the honking means "I'm coming through so you better stop".

Really too bad that most of the time they end up T-boning the guy with the right of way.

While I am NO fan of the Bldgs. Dept. what people have to understand is that it is not run by the City. The Buildings Department is run by the State, these are employees of the State (HUD) of NJ.

A quirk like having the door open in and not out is a major issue and fire hazard. I am sure that if the Bldg. Dept. put up road blocks it is because it was not up "to code". They don't do it because they feel like it, they have to answer to someone higher up when the stuff hits the fan. So don't be so quick to condemn them in every case. Although I do think that some of the things they require are a "bit much".

Not that the Mayor could do a whole lot about some of these things - - -

Dear Jackey -

What planet do you live on. You bet your A$$ "I" paid the bill for the construction cop to be here. When they hooked up our new sewer line "I" handed the cop $140. in CASH.

When we poured the foundation in my house you bet your A$$ "I" again paid the cop to stand there for another $140. in CASH.

When we put in the driveway you bet your A$$ "I" again paid the cop on construction detail YET another $140. in CASH.

I am not a contractor I am a private citizen who has a house in JC. The taxpayer DOES NOT pay for this, the homeowner does.

If you do anything in JC that requires a "COP" to be there to shut down the street because you need a concrete truck to pour concrete YOU PAY FOR IT ! Anything you do in JC requires a permit and a COP. Yes, I paid for it in CASH ! Two years ago they only accepted CASH and you gave it to them on the spot.

Would you like the names of all the officers that worked the construction detail that I paid in CASH? Get your facts straight before you open your mouth.

If she had any "balls" or half a brain she would not have bothered to apply in Hudson County. Maybe no one else wanted her and Daddy was there to get her "something" ------at least for now !

Can't you get something on your own without Daddy's help?

I don't know where YOU live but street cleaning was here last week, yesterday and today. Why would they care if it was a Jewish holiday - unless it is Christmas I'd move your car!

Construction detail is a whole different story. That's a side job for JC police officers. About two years ago you had to pay them $35 CASH for off duty work, with a minimum of 4 hours. If the guys stood there for an hour you paid him $140. being construction/crane/hooking up a sewer line. If it went over 4 hours you paid in addition to the 4 hr. minimum. They pocketed every dollar and sometimes worked two jobs prior to going to their regular police job. So making $280 cash a day in addition to a salary isn't bad at all. Now you have to pay by check so they actually have to pay taxes on it. Wasn't the case two years ago.

What I don't get is when there is construction detail they are here for 4 hours or LESS, but if I called the JCPD I would not get a response for at least an hour, sometimes having to call back 2-3 times. In the Harsimus Cove area I understand there are only (2) officers on duty from Newark Ave to 10th Street and from Grove to Division. That's hardly "police protection" in my mind. That's why the thugs are out at night mugging people and spraying Graffiti on every building in town....where are the JCPD then?....Dunkin Donuts?

Nepotism isn't the word, how convenient his entire family is employed and everyone else stands in line "looking for anything". If we were related maybe I'd even have a job with the City !

Yeah I am sure it is based on experience - just way too convenient if you ask me. Are there any other jobs open that maybe his niece/nephew can get?

Neverleft - Yeah, when we went they never let you walk either. I think now that they "charge" for the hay ride that you have the option of taking a wheelbarrow down instead. It was fun back in the day with the kids taking the hay ride, they loved it and we brought our pumpkins back on the truck too. Last time I was there was three years ago - when they started charging for everything. But my kids are grown now and dont' go back anymore. It was however a "fond memorable place". Guess I will go back when I have grandchildren (if I am not too old by then !) LOL

Went to Donaldson's in Hackettstown for years and it was great, they have a huge corn maze as well. Although the last couple of years it got really expensive. The hay ride down to the field was always free, now you have to pay for it? Kind of ridiculous since it takes about 60 seconds. Their prices have gone up pretty high in the last three years - next they'll charge for parking in the lot !

You also pay for the maze, ($5.00 two years ago per person) that too use to be free.

Eastmont Orchards in Colts Neck, NJ. From now until the end of October there are apples/peaches/pumpkins. Fun place. You can do a google search on it.

I just love these people that wait until it's dark to take the dog out for a walk. They walk up and down the street by the embankment all the time and as soon as the dog poops they hurry away. Well it's dark and no one sees you? So why pick it up? Some of these dogs weigh more than I do and in the morning I see what is left behind. Some people think it is gross to pick it up - it's worse if you leave it there!

Re: NJ 2009 Homestead Rebate?

People that file for a tax abatement get it because it is new construction (trying to lure you in by the City) - However, that does not mean they do not pay taxes. The abatement is a small percentage taken off your taxes every year. It is nowhere near 50% or anything like that. It helps but you're still paying a big chunk of the original tax when they do the assessment.

Re: Dog Poop

I think we're all tired of it. It is everywhere and the people that walk their dogs around the embankment on 6th Street don't feel the need to pick up. I see piles of dog crap wedged in the tall grass and it is disgusting. I see it plain as day on the sidewalks - WTF? Are you above the rest of us and don't feel like you have to pick it up? It is more than disgusting, it carries disease and people step in it and shlep it through their homes.

If you have a damn dog then carry a plastic bag and put it in your garbage can. You people are lazy frigin slobs and should not own pets. Do you yuppies think you're above it all and it is beneath you to clean up crap? Then get rid of the damn dog that you use for show and go eat some damn tofu trendy crap at a restaurant. But keep our streets clean cause you guys will be the first to complain when your "nanny" says your kid slipped on it on the sidewalk and now you have to wipe her shoes off.....

Oh dear - get a life and clean up after the damn dog !!!!!!
Or better yet - get rid of the damn dog !!!!!

You know who you are and I know who you are !!!!

If you have trouble with weeds anywhere file an online complaint at: cityofjerseycity.com

Click on "for residents" scroll down and go to the online help center. I know I've notified them of weeds on my block growing through the fence and the owner got a ticket for $125.00. Give them your email address and they actually do email you to tell you the status of the complaint. They will also tell you what inspector went and when. Entire process takes about a week but it was extremely helpful.

You have to take into account that if you live within walking distance of any of the schools - Ferris/Dickenson/McNair you have kids all day long eating and throwing trash in the street. Would be nice to have trash bins on a couple of the corners and maybe the kids would actually use them. Although I've seen some grown men walking down the street eating KFC and when they are done they throw the entire box by the sewer drain! So disgusting really.....

It could be worse I guess. You should see the crossing guard on the corner of VanVorst and Grand Street, in front of St. Peters. That cow doesn't move her fat butt for anything. She sits perched on the fire hydrant while she watches the kids cross. Wouldn't even think of getting up to cross them!

....and we pay them for this?

P.S. Yes you do need a permit. If you get caught without one you will either get a warning or a nice fine. Nothing like having the Bldg. Dept. put that big red sticker on your door!

You need a permit for just about everyting in Jersey City.

Re: HVAC Repair

Can't say I know that to be true. I see lots of "not so great" posts about a lot of things on there. I know of restaurants that aren't happy with comments and I don't see the guy in charge deleting those. But it's a personal choice of course - always good to "ask around" for a recommendation. We had 3-4 people tell us to use them. Our friends were extremely happy that they actually "saved" money and didn't fall for the PSE&G line of "we can't fix it you need to replace it for $2,000". New England came in and found a small leak for a total of $187.50 and that was over a year ago and it is still working fine.

Like I said "check around" - you don't have to take Kannekt as GOSPEL.

Re: Dentist Recommendation

If you are willing to take the train to Washington St. in Hoboken there is a Dr. Mussara (Hoboken Dental Associates) and he is very good and competent. I would suggest that you find out ahead of time (call) to see what insurance he does/does not take. I was always pleased with his work but unfortunately I don't have dental insurance so can't tell you what plans are accepted.

I moved from Hoboken to JC four years ago. We always used New England A/C (HVAC) on Harrison Street. Our friends highly recommended him and told us to read the reviews on Kannekt under Other Maintenance. We did and we hired him and we were very pleased. This guy knows his stuff. Forget about PSE&G, there is no such thing as
"worry free" - When we got to JC we called him and he also covers this entire area. Don't take it from me, read the reviews I don't think you will be disappointed at all.

Re: Water Quality in Jersey City?
Home away from home
Home away from home

The tap water on Sussex is pretty bad tasting. I prefer to buy gallons of water then to drink the tap water.

Just as an aside - I think all the water in our house is pretty bad. I can scrub my toilets with bleach/cleanser and within two days there is a black ring in the bowl and a pink residue where the water sits. Pretty disgusting - and yes I do clean the holes under the rim but the build up of scum just doesn't end.....it's even in the faucets in the kitchen and baths. Take a paper towel and wipe the area where the water comes out....it will end up being black !

I think you'd be safer buying water bottles or a Brita - or installing one of those water filters.

Yes, that is correct, if your salary income is over $75,000 then you do not get a rebate.....I live in Hudson County and got the rebate application yesterday.

Do a google search on "2009 Homestead Benefit Application" and you'll find all the answers you need to your questions. Hope this helps!

Re: 2009 Homestead Benefit Application

From what I understand if you are a homeowner you will receive your benefit as a credit on your tax property bill for the 2nd quarter in 2011. So it will be applied to your tax bill due May 1, 2011. You are suppose to receive a notice from the tax collectors office showing the credit when your tax bill comes.

If you are a tenant you will not receive any rebate.

So there are no longer any checks being mailed directly to you.....too bad, I always looked forward to a little extra $.

The Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange (Eagle Rock Reservation) is "spectacular". They have an outside veranda where we had our cocktail hour and the sit down dinner inside. It was absolutely beautiful and I would
highly recommend at least taking a look at it before you
decide on somewhere else. They can accomodate any number of people - check it out !

I visit Madame Claude's at least once or twice a month. They are very accomodating and their brunch is terrific. Sitting outside enjoy some fresh air sipping on a cappucino is wonderful ! Alyse, the owner is a warm and very pleasant person and so is her husband. I walk 9 blocks for her French Cuisine and so do my children.
We love it !

Jeeze, you can't be a total snob? Have you ever "treked" to White Star...? They have a great brunch menu and a great local low keyed crowd. I "TREK" as you say there very often and I live downtown. I love it as a sports bar and for their food. Of course you probably go to the Lighthorse Tavern so you can spend $10. a glass of some cheap red wine. I despise the place. Pompous people who want to be seen there so they can say they've been there.
No atmosphere unless you like looking at traffic. White Star and Madame Claude's (another place you have to TREK to) have great brunches and the service is great and so are the owners.....maybe you should try it instead of going to the Lowe's theatre......you know - a more distinctive place !

Re: Broken car windows all over

I have to say that walking down Sussex toward Warren on several occasions at night I see many cars with electronics out in the open or even cars with shopping bags and boxes on their back seats. That draws attention - best to just lock it all up in the trunk so they think nothing is in the car.
Two of the cars got broken windows the next morning. Seems to happen often on Sussex but very very late at night.
