My grandmother took me to both the Canton Tea Garden and Jules. Jules was the only restaurant we ever went to (twice) when I was a kid. It was on Franklin, near PS 8 across from my grandmother's apartment. Ahhhh....memories.

They absolutely should only take the fee if the deal closes, unless you have requested some inordinate service outside of routine closing.

Where do you see that Healy even mentioned rigged?

Simple fact is that the special election happened during a non-election year and that these types of elections have a lot lower turn out.

I honestly think Richardson is reminding the Healy crew that she is there and that she needs more 'attention' from City Hall.

If she was serious about becoming Council President, Brennan term is up shortly, she should be working for the council's vote and not trying to change the rules that would ultimately shorten her own term.

I agree that non-election years have lower turn-out. Healy knows that too, which makes his quote a dogpile. The quote from Healy IMPLIED the special election was somehow worth LESS than the regular City election. Elections that Healy and his cronies seem to deliberately engineer to create low turn-outs, by keeping them away from state and national ballots. Think you just swallowed the deceitful crap from the mayor's butt.

"Council President Brennan was elected by the full electorate in Jersey City and received approximately 12,000 votes" in the 2009 city election, Healy said in a statement. "With all due respect, the newly elected Councilwoman Richardson was the victor in a special election receiving 4,100 votes."

Definitely, deceitful, demeaning and disrespectful. Decide for yourself whether it's racist.

Agreed. Times 100. Well stated.

Your comments about incest just exacerbate the ignorance that you usually demonstrate in your posts. Sorry if you have to look up a word or two on the internet. Your avatar is blowing smoke out of the wrong end. Kooky? "has anyone thought of that" with no question mark at the end? Thier? Incomplete sentences? Keep posting. Your comments are invaluable.

I don't understand why people are continuing to support this business. I went one time a couple of years ago and after I bit into a whole slice of lime (rind included) in my rolled taco, I never went back. Maybe that's authentic Mexican and I'm a gringo American but that's pretty unappealing to me. If you're getting abused, can the food really be good enough to patronize this place?

I'm by NO means a cat lover but animal cruelty is cowardice. It's for simpletons who have to prey on the innocent because they can't muster up enough courage to create a fulfilling life for themselves. The same can be said for people who joke about it and excuse it as the fault of the victims of the sickness.

I'm almost waiting for someone to say "It's a city - If you don't want your cat's tail cut off, move to the suburbs!" Between the local government and the behavior that some people accept as routine, I sometimes think that in JC the inmates are running the asylum. I hope that someone catches this sicko in the act and mutilates the creep.

I believe I know where you live. I tend to think that city agencies may not properly address the issue. I have little to no faith in city organizations. I think that I would call the NJ division of health and human services as a starting point to get some direction.

From a realtor friend of mine, I've heard that the downtown rental market now is very hot. It's due to the fact that because of the economy, less people are buying and also Manhattan renters are being priced out of that market so they're coming to JC. You have to pay to live right upstairs from the PATH in a luxury building. I believe the rents at 225 Grand are higher, if that's any comfort.

I understand people's concerns but where is the compassion? The majority of these individuals probably have several issues but are for the most part harmless. Now if they really are doing something that might harm themselves or others then please do call the authorities.

It's easy to make ourselves believe that we can get them to the social services they need. Have most of you forgotten what the country is going through? Do you really think that the so called safety net can even provide them with what they need? Social services are stretched, or drastically cut or non-existent....and that would be a fair way to describe them before the economic down fall.

I was in Boston not too long ago. Had a few hours to kill in the middle of the night before my train left South Station. I walked around the Back Bay neighborhood. I saw so many homeless people. The most heartbreaking sight was outside this church that proudly proclaimed in a huge sign a mulit-million dollar exterior renovation. Yet all around the perimeter of this place lay 50 or 60 homeless people and mind you it's much colder up there than here. This image stuck in my mind....I wish someone came along pushed open the doors of this holy place and invited them in. Isn't that what holy places are suppose to be? Warm and inviting.

The human condition makes me sad.

I'm not hearing what you DID about what you saw in Boston or what your solution for the park problem is. Nobody can solve the horrible and increasing poverty situation and the plight of the homeless. It will always be with us. But let's not condemn people who work hard to make a home who just want to feel safe when they walk their dogs or take their children to the playground.

I'm not one to talk negatively about people on this board except for the mayor and the current administration, but I won't go to Ibby's anymore. I just can't eat compressed meat sliced off of a giant rotating wheel, plus I was treated rudely by Ibby and his brothers so I stopped going even though I liked the soup and falafel. I also witnessed them ignorantly mistreating someone that they perceived to be gay, not trying to disguise their disdain at all. But he's laughing at us all the way to the bank because he's opening Ibby's number 3 in Hoboken. Mean people suck.

I REALLY hope that folks try this place. I'm a sit-at-the-bar and have a drink and dinner kinda guy. Started with a perfect (and quite large) martini. I'm kind of a salad snob so I was really pleased when my Caesar arrived with perfectly dry leaves except for the dressing and just the right amount of the polenta croutons. My partner was hungry so he had the pulled pork nachos. Both starters were excellent. I went there because I was in the mood for a great sirloin and I was not disappointed. Perfect medium rare and really good quality beef. And the side of charred but still al dente asparaus was really good. My partner's ribs were abundant and not dripping with horrible sauce but they were really smoky which is not my tast but he loved them. But the potato salad that was underneath the ribs was outstanding.

The place is gorgeous. The chef is on point with everything. I know it's a bit off the beaten path, but please try this place. I would love to see it be a success. They're not going to be able to keep these prices forever because it's REALLY reasonable but I recommend that you go while the going's cheap! Best of luck, Tommy!

Re: Downtown: Having taken out huge second loan at height, couple now owes more than it's worth.
Home away from home
Home away from home

I won't fault this couple about buying at the height of the market thinking properties were going to continue to double in value every ten years. I did the same thing only to find myself underwater when the market and the economy tanked in '08. At first I panicked and got overwhelmed like many others. I spent many sleepless night with worry because my income is dependent on a strong economy (like just about everyone else except the very rich and those who are able to capitalize on the misery of others in order to make money.)

However, my panic did not stop me from moving forward to sell assets in order to pay down my mortgage to the break-even point and work even when there was no work. I went to basic cable, lived without health insurance for quite a while (stupid, but necessary at the time) and I eliminated all extras including my home phone and using the A/C in the summer. One of the luxuries that I loved was my morning coffee from my favorite shop but that got replaced by some good but cheap coffee at home with a $12 French press. And there are lots of other things that got eliminated or replaced with a less expensive alternative.

I was very stupid because I invested in an assumption. I never looked for sympathy even when i was literally on the precipice of financial disaster. Given the latest economic news, I may be in hot water again. But I just don't feel sympathy for these people because, like many others that are contributing to this economic disaster, these folks are willing to just walk away, altering their lifestyle minimally. In one of her blogs, she says "I can't wait to rent again." Hey, I'd like to rent again too. But that ain't happening.

Re: Basement Apartment Question
Home away from home
Home away from home

I believe that once you alert the city that you intend to live in the basement that you have to apply to zoning to convert to from a 3 to a 4-family house. Depending on the neighborhood, you may or may not be granted the zoning change. You would probably have to apply for permits for the kitchen construction. And you, most assuredly, would go through an immediate tax reassesment because you are changing the use of the building. I may be wrong but I think that's what would happen.
