Re: Wayne Street Issues

And you wonder why that $1mm+ brownstone on the corner of Wayne near Jersey Ave hasn't sold. I'm amazed anyone buys those places on the south side of that block.

How is it that there has been no progess on this particular block of JC? Everyone knows it's a real problem and the only thing I've heard was they cracked down on some gambling ring run out of the bodega....

Just terrible - is it me or are those response times really slow? the hospital is about 4 blocks away and you'd think there'd be a patrol car somewhere in the vicinity. 17 minutes after the ambulance? Perps were probably asleep at that point. Maybe that's how long it takes, but seems really slow to me...[

Janam closed up shop and that was a good place. Watch new restaurants like Ox to see how they do. My guess is yes, recession fears are impacting spending...

Nice puff piece. Anyone know how well sales are going at 77 Hudson? The psf pricing is definitely high by JC standards...

Re: Any indoor raquetball courts near downtown JC?

Not that I've been able to find. There is a racquet club up in Fort Lee or there's that Printing House gym in the West Village that isn't all too far. Surprised no one has tried to put in squash given the various former industrial sites and cheaper per square foot lease rates. I know someone put in a high end squash and tennis facility over in Long Island City fairly recently given the better economics. I'd be psyched if JC ever got squash, but I just don't know if there are enough players around. Furthermore I think Long Island City works becase tennis players are used to playing at Tennisport which is right on the water of LIC.

That all said I still play up in midtown, but not as much as when I lived in the city...

Not that anyone can know how quickly things happened or be totally rational in such a situation, but it seems like 911 should have been dialed at the sound of the first kick. I can't imagine a frontdoor went down in 2-3 kicks.

It's absolutely unacceptable that criminals think this sort of thing is a great idea. JC Police really need to step up their presence around downtown and JC judges need to issue sentences that dissuade the local thugs from all the break- ins/muggings/etc.

How is Jersey City less healthy or humane for children/dogs when compared to NYC or Brooklyn?

I've seen this notion on these boards a few times, but never really seen a thorough case made...

I find this 99 Wayne property quite interesting. According to zillow.com it sold 3/30/06 for $800K. I'm assuming it was in rough shape. According to the 99wayne.com site they've chopped it into 3 condo units with a total asking price of about $1.47mm. Not sure how much their conversion/updating cost, but it looks to me like they're looking for a quick buck on a sketchy block. The website says the two 1 Bedroom units are both under contract. The 2 Bedroom unit which entails basement, garden level and parlour is still up for grabs at $699k.

No pictures of inside, but I don't think it has much in the way of original details. I find it fascinating that people are willing to pay top of recent market prices on a block that as outlined above clearly has quality of life issues. I guess the owners could at least cut down on their carwashing bills if they park near that fire hydrant on the north side of the street...

don't forget the "welcome to the neighborhood" gunshots on mercer street this past Monday August 27th at 2AM.

Having spent the past 10 years in downtown nyc, anecdotally the crime is much more significant here. All you have to do is walk around and see the leftover car window glass scattered about the sidewalks.

Seems the police should put the same effort into crime prevention that they do into writing parking tickets..

I think the question is do the people moving into the "luxury" high rises feel the crime and do they put up a big stink. Seems like a bare minimum is done around the brownstone neighborhoods currently.
