OMG I was visiting a friend in FL and we stopped in a Publix to pick up some things. The bagger (yes, all the registers had baggers, smiling baggers!) helped us bring everything out to the car and then refused a tip. Amazingly friendly, helpful employees.

I completely agree. The one my parents shop in has a cafe area where my Dad can get a beer and hang out while my Mom putters around the store. I would finally be able to convince my man to go to the grocery store with me!

Walked by a week ago and liked the way it looked on the inside - definitely has more personality than most of that area in terms of interior design. Wood, oxidized metal, Edison bulbs, giant blown up images of... can't recall, that kind of stuff. The space is big but not huge. Some communal seating and some funky barstools too.

I hope they do well. There are so many vacant commercial spaces in the big towers that I was beginning to wonder what kinds of businesses they were courting. I definitely prefer independent bars and restaurants to chains, more daycares, beauty salons, and dry cleaners. I'll try it out when I stroll down the waterfront walkway on a weekend.

Any other reviews of this place? How's the food? How's the service? Yeah, we all know they're trying to do too much and they've got too many tv's, but do they really have 4 for $5 PBRs? Is that deal all the time, some night's special, or a happy hour deal?

I would be happy to have a place that serves European beers for a change. Even Zeppelin has switched over to a lot of American Craft at this point, and although they still run some of my German favs, they don't clean their lines enough so the beer can taste pretty terrible sometimes.

Love supporting Jersey City entrepreneurs and small businesses :) I just realized that you can do a search by city on Kickstarter and see what other local projects are happening.

I got a sausage slice yesterday for lunch for $2.50. It was nice and crispy, good sauce/cheese/sausage/crust ratio, and the price was right. Their sauce is a little sweet for my taste but I still enjoyed it. There were three other tables in there eating lunch.

Right now, it's my favorite NY style slice in the neighborhood.

Stopped in for a snack last night and really liked the spicy tuna and the Cuban.
I've never had a Japanese rice ball before but I loved the combination of warm fluffy rice filling and crispy seaweed exterior. I'll be back for a full meal soon.

The very friendly guy helped us unwrap the first one and we took over with the second. The elaborate packaging comes directly from Japan - they were unpacking it while we ordered. It does the trick for keeping the seaweed crisp.

I can only drink decaf anymore but my bf is very particular with his coffee. He likes a strong brew that isn't too acidic or over roasted.
Basic: his favorite, strong and well balanced
Choc o Pain: too weak
Word: weak and acidic
Beechwood: fine if you order an Americano
Dames: ok but pricey and slow

Just checked out Court St's menu and just to clarify:

1 1/4lb lobster dinner is $20.95

2 1/4lb lobster is $31.95

What a deal! Thanks for the recommendations!

Any restaurants doing a Lobster Night downtown these days? I saw Fire&Oak has one but it includes an app and dessert and runs $35.

I was in there one time (shopping their great greeting card selection) and the owner was talking to another customer about the business. From what I remember, they've lived in JC a long time and when the Village store was struggling, they decided to do the JC one to at least be closer to home. Then some of the lines that they've always carried that used to be difficult to come by started selling through big boxes like BB&B and JCP, cutting into their business.

IMO you've got to be able to adapt if you see changes like that happening. Start carrying something new and different. They had a great, ever changing selection of cards by artists, but honestly the rest of the store was just filled with things that you see everywhere these days in modern gift shops.

As long as the place isn't crawling with toddlers during the day, I might actually stop in.

It sure looks like there would be ample space for some sort of market at this location. There will be 14,120 square ft. of retail at the base of 70-90 Columbus.

With all the new buildings going up in the immediate area, this is seeming more and more viable. Here's hoping!

Jersey City woman suffers severe burns in early morning fire

That's pretty horrible that the fire alarms weren't initially set off by the blaze itself. 3:30am? If that fire had gotten out of control a lot of people would be dead this morning.

I know several people who have apartments in that building and I just confirmed that the alarms sounded right away. Some people didn't wake up, but building supers were running all over the building, banging on doors and emergency calls were sent out to cell phones.

A good time to remind everyone to check their smoke alarm batteries and to keep a fire extinguisher handy in the home.

Just because it has soy sauce, it doesn't mean it is not gluten-free. You can get gluten-free soy sauce (Kikkoman has a version, and Tamari is normally gluten-free). Perhaps the kitchen can accommodate a request to use Tamari in place of whatever soy sauce they normally use. I find many restaurants (definitely most sushi places) keep Tamari on hand (even our local gem, Honshu, will bring it to your table if you ask for it) so I see no reason why this place wouldn't do the same.

It would be wonderful if more restaurants did this and made a note on the menu that the item is GF. Wondered if they were thinking GF but didn't realize soy sauce typically isn't...

I'd be curious to hear how much of the budget is allocated for programs that help reduce the stray population, like TNR efforts. A shelter is a terrible place for an animal to wind up. Would personally rather see fewer strays struggling with life on the streets and an eventual stay in the shelter.

i'b be really interested in a billiards hall. I feel like there's enough places already with tons of tvs. How about use all that space for lots of pool tables?

Seems like downtown has a problem with copycat businesses: one upscale salon is doing great so 5 more open. One italian restaurant is doing great so 5 more open. One craft beer bar does great so every other bar starts pouring american craft beers (including the german biergarten). One bar gets 25 tvs so all bars suddenly think they should follow. We need some new, creative options.
