The vigil last night was obviously very appropriate, tastetful, and well covered with news broadcasts.

Certainly, parking in the immediate area was at more than its usual premium on account of the attendees, and I was wondering if anyone else noticed the JCPA buggies (two or three of them) swarming the area at the time.

You'd think a few red zone parkers (vigil attendees) could get some brief slack, given the ocassion. Nothing like JCPA buggies circling the park to bring dignity to such a solemn event.

As always, this city is a class act.

The wrap-up.........

Met with Stryner (the principal) this morning for about 15 minutes. He could not have been more receptive or gracious ---- and very much appreciated my visit because he apparently has been compiling a dossier of sorts on these particular hooligans (particularly on the girl "ring leader").

In fact, when I described the incident, he immediately said: "I have a pretty good idea of who you're talking about" --- and then he proceeded to describe their appearance and features very accurately. The guy is clearly on top of his game at that school, and I can see why he is so respected, so obviously I take him fully at his word when he says that he will address the matter appropriately.

If nothing else, maybe being called on it will put these little cherubs on a hiatus of mischief for a little while. If only one window or other piece of property is not potentially subject to vandalism as a result, then it was clearly worth the effort (yes, even if it's the window or other property of one of you who thinks I'm a crazy old man for chasing kids down the street!).

It's guys like Marvin Stryner who kind of restore your faith in the system --- whatever that even means anymore.

Robin -- really, all due respect ---- your logic is skewed.

So, because no glass was actually broken on any windows on this block (although these kids were certainly old enough to know the potential consequences of their actions), it means this gets classified as a meaningless adolescent prank?

That's the equivalent of saying: "Well, I drove home stone-blown drunk, but I didn't hit anyone or anything, and I got home in one piece, so what I did is perfectly okay."

You're going to make a fine parent one day, if you're not already (insert sarcasm here).

To answer one inquiry ---- they were "seventh or eighth graders" ---- I got at least that much from the school security guard. Not as if I even needed to be told that ---- the boys were as big as me!

Vigilante -- yes, I did feign to take the girl's picture and she was pissed. In truth, I just upgraded my blackberry and haven't mastered this one yet (let alone the camera feature!), so it was a total bluff but she bought it hook, line, and sinker.

And yes, there was indeed a time when kids had some modicum of fear ---- there was also a time when you could just ring their necks ----- but not anymore! You end up being the one taken away in "bracelets."

Like comparing apples and bowling balls ------

Knocking on doors and running away is harmless kid stuff. However, breaking the pane (or panes) of a full-length parlor window is not harmless ---- it's called vandalism.

But thank you for playing ----- sorry I don't have a year's supply of Rice-a-Roni to offer you.

Cordero kids throwing rocks

Just can't stay away

About 2:00/2:15 today, four Cordero kids (one girl and three boys) were coming up Jersey Avenue toward Hamilton Park and were throwing little rocks and who knows what else at houses -- specifically at the windows.

As I always do on extended phone calls, I was on my feet moving around and happened to be looking outside when one came right at my window! Nothing broken, thank goodness ------ that doesn't means someone else's window on the block isn't.

I yelled out the window -- they took off. I followed them through Hamilton Park --- they started to run again when they saw me. Ultimately we all end up back at Cordero where the three boys scattered, and where the girl getting left behind obviously refused to give her name or the names of her friends (big suprise).

The security guard, quite honestly, was not that helpful --- not even in at least trying to identify the girl who I was pointing out. I was simply told that I'd have to come back and talk the principal who was not available at the time.

So here I am --- four kids whose names I do not know and whose faces I certainly won't have a clear memory of tomorrow morning ---- and I'm on my way to the principal's office anyway.

Tell me how much I'm wasting my time (or not) and if I should be handling this differently. I can't imagine the warmest of receptions at the 7th Street precinct since I have no names or clear faces and since I can see no damage on any houses on the block (b/t 7th and 8th).

Any thoughts?

Assuming it really is him and it's not just speculation...................

For someone who is a lifelong resident, Frank should know how annoying stuff like that plays. Even if he were the most eminently qualified candidate, it would still annoy people enough not to vote for him.

Off-point but related in principle, this is also why there are some establishments around here that I won't patronize --- because they have some kid throw a handful of their promotional materials on front steps --- materials that then proceed to blow all over the street (White Star Bar being the biggest offender that comes to mind).

Obviously, the White Star is doing just fine without my business -- as is Frank's pizza place ---- but I'll take my dollars elsewhere until they start showing a little respect for their own neighborhood.

Limiting one's indulgence in "80-proof cheer" is a virtual pre-req for diabetics on account of how the body processes alcohol intake.

I'm really amazed that this has piqued no interest, since there are plenty of vehicles that have JCPA stickers on windshields and which will subsequently have trouble passing their next state inspection at a (relatively) local inspection station.

In any event, I resolved my issue.

I should have added to the original post that I haven't yet addressed this with the JCPA.

As you know, anything out the of the norm with them requires an in-person visit if you want any sort of results (and even that's a stretch), and it also requires about 30-minutes of breathing exercises beforehand to keep you calm in the face of incompetence.

Parking Authority vs. Motor Vehicle
#77
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I was at the Secaucus inspection lanes this morning. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I wondered why this issue never came to bear, and indeed it finally has???

According to the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, one?s windshield is to be free and clear of everything, with the exception of the inspection sticker. Yes, they still overlook PBA placards and official things like that, but they?re now cracking down on the JCPA parking stickers (and Hoboken?s and others).

As you know, if one has slightly darker rear windows (not tinted, which are illegal), the folks on Central Avenue tell you not to place the sticker in the back, but rather on the windshield above the inspection sticker.

Motor Vehicle is now knocking people down on inspection for having the parking sticker on the windshield (which, quite frankly, is legitimate). Ideally, I suppose you could take the sticker off before hitting the inspection lanes and then put it right back on after you pass, but those stickers don?t come off neatly (and rarely in one piece), and they also don?t re-stick very well.

If indeed you do take the sticker off before hitting the inspection lanes (rendering it unusable in the process), you will inevitably get humped another $15.00 by the JCPA for a new one, which is bullsh*t.

And in truth, you?re breaking the law by continuing to put the sticker back on the windshield --- and conceivably could be cited for it (if stopped for another violation or if perhaps passing through a small municipality, where they have nothing better to do than to enforce such things).

One of the inspection folks mentioned it to me just as I entered the lanes, so I ducked out with sticker unscathed ---- but I still ultimately need an inspection! I figured I better have a plan in place first before I head back.

I?m sure there are several who will soon be in this position too ---- and it inevitably is a procedural problem that needs to be remedied by JCPA and other municipalities? parking authorities.

Any thoughts?

Have to be very careful how I phrase this first part ---- you know, the whole slander thing and all...........

MEM did manage 264-286 Ninth Street (the complex right on Hamilton Park) years ago when I owned a unit in there. I'll just say that they were fired for what I regarded to be very good reason.

For this second part, I need no filter ----- the owner of MEM (Marty Laderman) owns a unit in another building where I also own --- 164 Ogden Avenue --- and he is currently THOUSANDS in arrears on his monthly condo fees --- just as he was a few years ago, and we had to file a lien against the property. He paid it off and then ran up the big tab again (so it looks like it's "lien time" again).

The guy is a piece of sh*t.

Delighted to report that the JCPD was issuing off-leash summonses in Hamilton Park today at 3:45 PM.

Btw, for those who repeatedly beat the drum of how this is "such a huge drain on police resources that are better spent elseswhere".........you should know that the entire exercise took all of about ten minutes. One of the boys in blue sat in an idling police cruiser on 8th, while the other member of the donut squad entered the park, targeted three off-leash violators, and scribbled out the respective summonses in very quick order.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the same meager amount of time that these uniformed geniuses would waste sipping a cup of coffee from Cristo's, so I really don't see the meteoric drain on city-wide resources (or in this case, on the "east end" resources), and simultaneously there are three more dog persons (owners, walkers, whatever) who now realize that the park is not their eminent domain.

To be honest (and I'm not at all trying to be abrasive when I say this), you're not in a position to "insist" on anything, unless it is something that is a clear code violation (building or fire).

Who knows? Maybe if enough people walk through and make noise to the owner that this seems a big security breach that would prohibit them from renting, maybe he/she will do something about it.
