The article states that Kelly was awarded lifetime benefits back in 2010. Other than ensuring he doesn't continue to receive a paycheck, I'm not sure how any of his compensation is the responsibility of the current administration.

I wouldn't bet on that - perhaps all the diversity and the fact that JC has a pretty hardcore/crime troubled ghetto might be negatives in their new store process.

Harlem Whole Foods will be finished sometime in 2015 @ 125th Street.

An example of how Harlem has gentrified WAY faster than DTJC. Who would have thought such a thing 10 years ago?

As in the case of much of the other recent big box retail development in Harlem, I'd say the only thing it's evidence of is the corporation receiving a huge tax break for building a store which will cater largely to the Morningside/Inwood/Riverdale crowd who are tired of slogging further downtown.

To speak to the general topic, I'll also point out that Brooklyn is only just getting its first WF this fall (maybe), and I'd think additional development would be slated there before JC or Hoboken.

More of a potential problem than the resources spent on the search is the fact that Howard Safir is to lead the evaluation. Safir was at the helm during two of the most damaging incidents in recent NYPD history, namely the torture of Abner Louima and the murder of Amadou Diallo. He oversaw the expansion of the NYPD Street Crime Unit, whose aggressive tactics have been cited as the genesis of the ?Stop and Frisk? policy that is the department?s current albatross in minority communities. If there is to be a renewed effort toward community policing and rebuilding a diverse and representative police force, this seems an odd point of departure.

The MTA actually owns commuter buses whereas PATH/PA does not. It may be a wise investment for them, though, if events on the scale of Sandy recur. They can't rely on NJ Transit to cover the slack (in light of their horrible service after Sandy), and it would keep all those commuter dollars in their coffers, rather than in the pockets of the jitney owners. Seeing a uniformed PATH employee help guide customers onto the jitneys at JSQ served to underscore their impotence during that crisis, for me. Emergency bus service between their transit hubs at JSQ and PABT should be part of their future planning.

My main gripe about the PATH is the lack of weekday service to Jersey City, when it?s patently clear where the majority of the ridership lies. It?s really frustrating to stand on the suffocatingly hot platform at 9th street and watch a train to Hoboken pass by with, at most, 20 people per car, followed by a train to JSQ that?s packed to the doors, even well into the evening.

With the exception of rush hours, I think all trains from 33rd street should terminate at JSQ., with alternating trains taking the Hoboken/JSQ route. It?s the same travel time for folks at Hoboken, since they're the first stop after the city, and people going to JC can decide whether they want to take the express or the scenic route. With all the new development being proposed in JC, something needs to happen to alleviate the overcrowding somewhere along the system, and if new infrastructure isn't going to happen, this seems like the most logical solution.

At the risk of making it even more difficult to book an appointment there, I have to double down on my recommendation of Tousled. I've been going for nearly 3 years now, and my hair is very happy they're in the neighborhood. The price is very reasonable for the quality, and I've never been disappointed in any of their services.

They have integrity. I've seen Rita consult for 30 minutes with experts at Aveda on behalf of a client, and then decline to perform the very pricey service the client requested, which was sure to damage her hair.

They cut, color and style men's hair as well--guys have been there many times during my appointments. They've always left looking great. These ladies know their stuff.

Many of the items available, including the meat, are seasonal and fresh from the farmers and producers, so pricing and availability can change weekly, though there's always a very good selection at lower than you'd pay for something comparable at WF or a specialty store.

During the orientation, you get the opportunity to see the most current offerings and pricing. As a group, we buy directly from the distributors and producers and working together makes the savings on the goods possible. Attending a session helps to explain how it all works.

I'm so happy that they're just around the corner from me! Their dried fruit pilaf and eggplant salad makes for the only decent vegetarian meal I can get around here that isn't Indian, and it's truly delicious. Their samosas are also very good.

As for the chak-chak, I refer to it as "crack-crack". They sometimes have chocolate dipped slices, which is a bit like gilding the lily.

The kitchen at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Five Corners is a commercial kitchen, and they rent it to small businesses and startups at a reasonable price (I believe it's about $25 an hour). They don't have a stand mixer right now, but the facilities include a double convection oven, large fridge, double sinks, commercial dishwasher, etc. They can tell you more if you give them a call.

I was living in Greenpoint when WORD opened around the corner from me, and I was sad to leave it behind, after many years of wishing for a good bookstore nearby. They had some fun events, and it was also friendly and low-key--a great place to browse while waiting for my laundry to dry. I can't wait!

WORD is also one of the independent bookstores taking part in the Kobo/American Booksellers Association partnership, which gives the participating bookstore of your choice part of the proceeds of e-books purchased for the Kobo reader or app. I've been holding off on getting an e-reader, but now that I can also benefit a local business, I'm going to pick one up. The Kobo Mini is awfully cute.

If you need italian cookies, pastries or cakes go to Monteleone's on Newark Ave next to Casa Dante, 5 min walk from JSQ PATH. Doesnt get more old school than Monteleone's, you can't go wrong there.

No hipster, gourmet, organic overpriced nonsense at any of these 3 places. That's why they've all been in business forever.

I second and third the sweets at Monteleone's, though the place is diet kryptonite. They're my go-to local bakery for holidays and special occasions. Their rum cake is now my favorite birthday cake, and their cookies by the pound are delicious and affordable (and they'll let you choose your favorites!). Their cupcakes are only 50 cents, and they're quite good, though not so pretty. If you're not nearby, it's really worth the trip. The quality is consistent and it's a great value.

Hey MoxieBaby:
I think you're a West Sider, like me. The NJT 119 bus from Bayonne to PABT along JFK is running their normal schedule, but be advised that "normal" means that there are no buses between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. You can catch it at rush hours and the last bus out of NY is around 10 p.m.

The 87 and 80 buses are running from Gates Avenue to JSQ. If you can get there, the 125 at gate C4 also runs to PABT, or you can catch any of the commuter vans for $3 a ride. They're at gate B2 and they run pretty frequently until 1 a.m. and you can pick them up at gate 51 at PABT.

I think it's ridiculous that they're blaming the loss of the 10/99s routes to NYC on a lack of ridership, since I've yet to be on the buses to or from NYC when they're not packed to the gills--especially late at night. If anything, they need to run a few more buses on the route, particularly on the weekends, since that's when I've noticed the service is frustratingly spotty. I would use it more if it showed up on schedule.

I live in McGinley, and having a bus from NYC that stops on my corner has been a lifesaver for me many nights, especially in bad weather when it's impossible to get a cab from JSQ, and waiting there for a bus isn't much better. I feel very sorry, though, for those in the Heights for whom this bus is the most cost-effective and convenient option. A bus that's full upon leaving PABT, pretty much clears out by the time we hit JSQ, so i'd say that's the majority of their NYC to JC ridership.

Rita at Tousled on Jersey does an excellent, long lasting blowout with Aveda products, but I think it will set you back $40. She really styles well though, so you end up with red carpet premiere hair, instead of the greasy, stick-straight do you can get at cheaper places. If you're due for a trim anyway, you should make an appointment there. She's an expert stylist and haircuts are just $50, with the shampoo/conditioner/blowdry included.

http://www.mytousledhair.com/

Don't know what else is available Downtown, but most every salon uptown will do a blowout in the $20-$30 range, if you don't mind traveling.

I've mentioned this before in another thread, but wipe the areas you see the ants originate from and their path with peppermint essential oil. They hate it, it's totally natural, and it leaves your house smelling minty fresh. My ants show up every spring, attracted by the japanese maple outside of my window. I just wipe down my windowsills and floors with the oil after the first day, and they don't come back.

IAMA Woman who's been inside the cafe!!!

Seriously, it was fine. The conversation stopped as I passed through the phalanx of smokers outside, but again, as a woman, nothing I haven't encountered before. I smiled, said good evening, and went in. I think the surprise (if that's what it was) was due to my not being a regular rather than being female. There was another middle eastern woman inside eating supper with a man, perhaps her husband.

The guys at the counter couldn't have been nicer to me. They handed me a single greasy menu from which I couldn't decipher anything I could eat. When they saw I was having trouble, they just asked me what I would like to have, and then grilled a whole fish, put it together with some rice, bread and olives and made me a salad. I think the whole thing was less than $10.

I think Hoboken is watered down enough, so I hope JSQ doesn't go the same route.

As a resident of the area, and someone who has been around when other neighborhoods have been "gentrified", I find that things kind of happen organically. What people usually do is choose to support a local scene or two that is more like the neighborhood they want than the one they have. Have you checked out what's going on with Uptown Crew?

http://jcuptowncrew.blogspot.com/

Have you gone to any of the live music events at Raph's Plaza or checked out the stuff at Ed's Salvage?

http://www.edssalvageco.com/

Do you see any of the flicks at the Loew's Jersey or frequent the Farmers Market in JSQ? Go to any neighborhood association meetings? How about finding out what's up with Lincoln Park (which is beautiful in the spring and summer)?

If you consistently support the new and interesting things that are happening in your neighborhood, and get your friends and neighbors to do the same, you'll be happier with where you are and you'll be a factor in making the area the kind of place that new businesses will take a chance on.

Hi Brian,

Would be glad to see something like this get started in JC. I've read something about the Brooklyn Creative League which offers this kind of resource and think it would be a brilliant idea to offer a mutually supportive workspace for people who work independently here. Just looking at the list of members at BCL will give you an idea of how well this can work for a variety of small businesses, non-profit orgs and other independents who need a place with reliable resources
and without the isolation and distraction of a home office.

I think it would be wonderful for the city, and I'll talk it up whenever I have the opportunity.

Has anyone else visited Tousled? They've been open for about a month on Jersey Avenue. I got a great cut here recently, and though I don't usually do this, I had to post and give them props. Their services are fantastic (with Aveda products!) and very reasonably priced. The owner, Rita, is a skilled stylist, and after years visiting high-priced salons, I'm glad there's a place of comparable quality I can support in the neighborhood that won't break my budget. Hope everyone else will support them too!

RJ,
Glad you love the L, but you've caught it in it's heyday. I rode the L train daily from Rockaway Parkway to my EV high school once upon a time, and I assure you, it was pure skankeriffic torture. The cars were the oldest in the line, and broke down regularly. When I spoke about rats on the subway, I was specifically referencing the dachshund-sized creature that nearly nibbled my jeans at the First Avenue stop. I'm convinced the line got the new subway cars first because the old ones couldn't go another month and they didn't care about using the riders from East New York and Canarsie as their guinea pigs. Please observe the bitching from a few short years ago:

http://gothamist.com/2007/05/22/l_train_crowded.php

I'm happy it's improved enough to both impress you and become a prime pick-up spot for hipsters burrowing their way into Brooklyn.

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/no ... rn_UebD8tTwSPIDi7VmuYKpmJ

The PATH is not perfect, and I'm sure the line could benefit from constructive feedback, but it's not the worst I've seen, and most days, I find it downright pleasant.

I ride the PATH daily, and I don't have much of a problem with it either. Maybe a lifetime of riding on the subways with rats and other wildlife on the platforms, being groped by strangers, and nearly being mugged has put things in some perspective for me. I've never seen a PATH station as filthy as a subway station, even without the garbage cans (the lack of which I too lament), and the most crowded rush hour trains are not as packed as the subways I've been on.

Do I wish the service were better nights and weekends? Sure. But at least I feel safe when I'm waiting at 33rd street at odd hours, even if it is a longer wait.

Is it too hot in the stations in the summer? Yes. But they run on a schedule, and I try to show up at a time when I know I won't have to wait long.

As for the rough ride, I think it depends a lot on the engineer and the equipment. There are some bucking broncos that I just never ride with, and a couple that make the trip as smooth as glass.

And it's not much more than a 20 minute ride, wherever you're taking it from or to, which is something I can deal with.

Re: JC-Hopkins Ave or Fairmount

I live in the neighborhood of the Fairmount property and am familiar with the neighborhood around Hopkins. There are lots of kids around here, as well as some pretty cool parents. The kids seem to be playing outside all the time when school's out, so if they're terrified, they're hiding it well. If in doubt, the Lincoln park playground is not a far walk and it's usually full of parents and kids from the neighborhood. You can just ask them.

There are also schools and day care within a short walk. I think either place would be good for transportation for you, but in terms of general convenience, i'd have to give my neighborhood the edge, since there are lots of stores and services nearby. I don't have a car either and i get around fine most days. there's lots of transportation here, even for short shopping trips.

In terms of the property, I'm not sure of what you'll be getting on Hopkins, but I've seen much of what's there, and I'd rather have a renovated, spacious pre-war apartment than a floor of a frame house. Of course, there are other things to consider such as common charges and the general maintenance of the property. I think you'll have space to grow on Fairmount, and better prospects for resale, if that's your choice. Good luck!
