Re: Space in Hamilton Square-- restaurant

Thanks for the info. I guess the Hamilton Park area must be getting pretty affluent, with a flower shop and a wedding cake shop apparently able to survive there. I was kind of hoping for more every day services. On that same note, it looks like the long-anticipated pet place will NOT have self-serve grooming facilities, which is disappointing. I'll have to continue to go to Clifton to bathe my dog. Not sure how many boutique-y dog treats I'll be needing. But I will definitely be requesting that they start carrying the dog food my dog eats.

I'm glad we're getting some businesses, anyway.

Our city has a lot of problems, many of which are much more complex than dogs running around the pet-free areas of the park. But this problem is easily fixed. That's why people are so upset. Just keep your dogs on the other parts of the lawn, and watch to make sure they don't wander where they should go. That's it. Then the kid who has a fear of dogs can play freely, the family that's picnicking doesn't have to worry about food being snatched up, and the sunbather doesn't have to worry about lying down on pee or something even more gross. How hard is that, and why are people so hell bent on not following the rules just for the sake of not following the rules?

Oh. That's kind of a problem, then. Joe told me I should get all new tires because my current ones are in rough shape. So now I have to get the tires myself and bring them to Ralph's?

Any other reliable tire places where they actually sell tires?

If nothing else, I guess I can go to Sears.

Ralph's tire--good place?

I bring my car to Joe's Auto Electric for repairs, and this time I had a low tire. He put air in it but recommended bringing it to Ralph's at 4th and Erie to see if it's a leak. Does anyone have experience with this place? Are they trustworthy? Any other tire place to recommend?

I think this place is really good, considering it's in the mall. I would never compare it to restaurant food, of course. It's the mall. The people there are really nice. If you're not sure about something, they'll let you taste it before you order it.

Space in Hamilton Square-- restaurant

They seem to be preparing to open one of the spaces in Hamilton Square (off Hamilton Park). I heard it was going to be a dumpling place. Does anyone know if this is true or have any other information?

The kebabs here are wonderful, but the service is terrible. Last time I was there there were three tables filled and two people working the front. Service was incredibly slow and no one seemed to care whether we had a nice meal. The owner seems nice, but I don't understand why he thinks the level of service is acceptable.

I'm a dog owner, and I think it's fine to single out dog owners who let their dogs on the Pet-Free lawns. There are other areas of the park where the dogs can go---the dog runs and the areas that aren't pet-free. So why do some people insist on letting their dogs on the couple of areas where humans should be assured that there's no pee?

It was not directed at anyone on this board. I'm getting lots of e-mails from people I know in the West, laughing at NYers for running outside in the quake and that kind of thing.

Anyway, it was just a joke.

I really like this place. I went with my family for my birthday and we enjoyed everything, but particularly the black cod with lobster, the shrimp risotto, the gazpacho (with sunchoke, not tomato), and the beet/feta olive oil that came with the bread. Also, the desserts were delicious, particularly the cobbler, as someone else mentioned. The service was excellent-- the servers were very attentive, and always making sure we had what we needed. They figured it was my birthday when they saw me opening gifts and one of the desserts arrived with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate.
It was odd that the place was nearly empty. It's a bit out of the way but really not far at all from downtown and worth the trip. Jersey City has a dearth of good restaurants, and this one is really good. It's pricey, but the food lives up to expectations.

I just walked over to this market because I forgot a few things at the supermarket. It's nice, well organized, and well stocked. They've got the produce I've been hoping for (I wish it was organic, but you can't have everything), along with all the basics and more. Lots of Indian products, too, and a deli. Unlike its predecessor, this market really takes advantage of the space.

Fruits and vegetables of all sorts? That's what I've been waiting for in a local market. The coop is nice but a little out of my budget.

The dog in the above pic appears to be peeing.

Okay, here's what happened. There's a fire hydrant at the corner of 8th and W. Hamilton. My dog peed there. The firefighter was driving down 8th toward the hydrant. He saw my dog squatting from 30-40 feet away and then saw me walk away without picking anything up. That's where he stopped his truck. He did not bother to walk over and look at what had been deposited at the hydrant. If he had, he would have seen a wet sidewalk. He assumed that the dog was pooping because she was in a squatting position, apparently not realizing that a female dog's peeing position is similar to its pooping position.

To the firefighter who stopped his vehicle expressly to confront/humiliate me for not picking up my dog's poop:

1. Thank you for being so vigilant. People who don't pick up after their dogs should be reprimanded, even ticketed.

2. Please don't use profanity when you make your accusation, and please listen when the person tells you they have a female dog and female dogs squat to pee. My dog had indeed peed, and if you had taken the time to go with me to the spot where the act took place, you would have seen that.

3. When I held up my biodegradable dog poop bag and offered to prove to you that my dog had peed, you should have applauded me. Okay, maybe that's going a bit too far.

4. Have a nice day. (Seriously. Thanks again for being so vigilant.)

I'm kind of sick of the same-old same old around HP: pizza and bar food with--what, two or three?--other restaurants that are OK but nothing more. I wonder if that unoccupied space at Hamilton Square will be a restaurant. I'm hoping for something really creative and delicious.

Re: Jersey City councilman wants more parking Downtown

I'm no urban planner, but it seems to me that downtown JC doesn't know if it wants to be a city or a suburb. While some people walk, others do their errands in their cars. The public transportation system is not as extensive as in many large cities. Sure, there is the light rail and there are buses, but not everyone lives close to a stop. Some local businesses are definitely suffering, but whether that's because of permit issues, the way the businesses are being run, or lack of customers, I don't know. Or maybe it's because NYC is so close. I wish there was a bus in my neighborhood to zip me to Newark, Grove, and Paulus Hook, as I don't always have time/inclination to walk and I would prefer not to drive. But would enough people use it? That said, the parking decks should have validation systems with local businesses if they don't already, so people are encouraged to shop locally.

throwing rocks at people?

I was just out walking my dog by Hamilton Park and I heard the sound of young guys yelling and laughing and a loud bang. Just then, three guys on bicycles came around the corner and as they passed me, they threw a handful of rocks at me. The rocks didn't hit me; they just missed me and hit the metal fence that goes around the park and made another loud bang. Maybe the guys didn't realize I was there and just wanted to hit the fence, because they kept going and threw more rocks at the fence as they went down the street. Though they must have seen me. I thought about calling the police, but the three guys were out of earshot within a minute or so.
What is wrong with people?

If you end up opening a restaurant, may I request that you make sure the food is GOOD? I know it may sound obvious, but there are so many places in JC that run from "mediocre" to "decent," and "decent" isn't even that great. There are a few good places, but for a large city (even just limiting it to downtown), it's surprising hard to find anything great.
In any case, good luck with whatever you end up doing.

As for the basketball court, there's a volunteer park cleanup group that cleans up the park every day except during the winter. I assume we're going to start up again soon. Why don't you sign up? But you can really clean up dog pee, can you?

Of course "the park belongs to everybody." But there is plenty of OTHER space for those dogs to run free, if you insist on that. (I won't get into the unfairness of letting your dog off the leash in a highly populated public space.) Why do you have to choose the area that's set aside for people only? Use the 8th Street side of the park. You don't see families spreading out picnic blankets on the tennis courts, do you? No, because there's a lawn for that, and other people want to use the courts to play tennis. The park is a beautiful public space that we can share. It's not about control. It's about making a few rules so everyone can enjoy the park in their own way.

Some people are mocking this thread, and I think the cynicism on this board gets old really fast. Yes, we live in a city with a lot of problems. But a community is not a community unless the citizens work to make it as pleasant as possible for everyone. There are people blatantly disregarding a rule that's meant to let everyone share the park. It's like people who litter. No, maybe the police aren't going to be able to write a ticket for everyone who litters, but that doesn't make it acceptable. Don't throw your trash on the ground, pick up your dog poop, and don't let your dog go where dogs are not allowed. It's just a matter of being a decent, considerate human being and remembering that there are other people in the world besides yourself.

Carpetbaggertil718, there is just so much wrong with your post.
1. If your dog has a "medical issue," walk him AROUND the pet-free zone on to the non-pet free zone on a leash.
2. I'm sorry that you don't enjoy the park. A lot of people like to sit on the lawn and it would be nice to have it pee-free AND green.
3. Yes, there are lots of problems in the world. Personally, I can think about more than one problem at a time. I'm smart that way.

Every evening I see people with their off-leash dogs in the pet-free zones of Hamilton Park. As a dog owner, I just don't understand this. There are two dog runs. And if you still insist on having your dog off-leash, there are areas that aren't designated pet-free. Now two of the pet-free signs have been uprooted. I have no idea who did this. I'm just wondering why we can't have a couple of pet-free zones where people can sit and enjoy the park and not have to worry about sitting in dog pee.

Wyoming plagued by big-city problem: smog
By MEAD GRUVER, Associated Press Mead Gruver, Associated Press 34 mins ago

CHEYENNE, Wyo. ? Wyoming, famous for its crisp mountain air and breathtaking, far-as-the-eye-can-see vistas, is looking a lot like smoggy Los Angeles these days because of a boom in natural gas drilling.

Folks who live near the gas fields in the western part of this outdoorsy state are complaining of watery eyes, shortness of breath and bloody noses because of ozone levels that have exceeded what people in L.A. and other major cities wheeze through on their worst pollution days.

"It is scary to me personally. I never would have guessed in a million years you would have that kind of danger here," Debbee Miller, a manager at a Pinedale snowmobile dealership, said Monday.

In many ways, it's a haze of prosperity: Gas drilling is going strong again, and as a result, so is the Cowboy State's economy. Wyoming enjoys one of the nation's lowest unemployment rates, 6.4 percent. And while many other states are running up monumental deficits, lawmakers are projecting a budget surplus of more than $1 billion over the coming year in this state of a half-million people.

Still, in the Upper Green River Basin, where at least one daycare center called off outdoor recess and state officials have urged the elderly to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, some wonder if they've made a bargain with the devil. Two days last week, ozone levels in the gas-rich basin rose above the highest levels recorded in the biggest U.S. cities last year.

"They're trading off health for profit. It's outrageous. We're not a Third World country," said Elaine Crumpley, a retired science teacher who lives just outside Pinedale.

Preliminary data show ozone levels last Wednesday got as high as 124 parts per billion. That's two-thirds higher than the Environmental Protection Agency's maximum healthy limit of 75 parts per billion and above the worst day in Los Angeles all last year, 114 parts per billion, according to EPA records. Ozone levels in the basin reached 116 on March 1 and 104 on Saturday.

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality urged the elderly, children and people with respiratory conditions to avoid strenuous or extended activity outdoors.

The Children's Discovery Center in Pinedale set up indoor obstacle courses and turned kids loose on computers instead of letting them out on the playground in the afternoon.

High levels of ozone happen in the Upper Green River Basin only during the winter. They result from a combination of gas industry emissions, snow on the ground, bright sunshine and temperature inversions, in which cool air near the ground is covered by a layer of warmer air. Pollution builds up during the day and becomes visible along the horizon as a thin layer of brown smudge ? smog ? by midafternoon.

People have noticed the air just isn't as clear as it once was.

"It's like maybe when you're not wearing your glasses when you ought to be," said Miller, whose daily commute from her log home includes an eight-mile snowmobile ride just to get to a plowed road.

The gas industry has drilled hundreds of wells in the basin over the past decade and made the basin one of the top gas-producing areas in the U.S.

"Ultimately it comes down to accountability," said Linda Baker, director of the Upper Green River Alliance. "It doesn't seem to me the companies are being very accountable to the residents here." High ozone, she said, gave her a constant nosebleed three days last week.

Crumpley, 68, reported having difficulty on walks and showshoe trips. "You feel a tightness in your chest. You seem to be less able to hold in air. My eyes burn and water constantly, and I've had nosebleed problems," she said.

Drilling of new wells, routine maintenance and gas-field equipment release substances that contribute to ozone pollution, including volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides. Last week's ozone alerts weren't the first in the basin ? they also occurred in 2008 and 2009 ? but they were the first in more than two years.

Gas industry officials say they are working hard to curb smog by reducing truck traffic and switching to drilling rigs with pollution control equipment. They have also postponed well completions and routine maintenance until the ozone advisories have passed, said Shell spokeswoman Darci Sinclair.

"Shell has taken some meaningful measures to really reduce our measures. Some were voluntary and some were mandatory, but they've resulted in some significant reductions," Sinclair said.

Indeed, gas industry emissions that contribute to ozone pollution, as reported by the petroleum companies themselves, are down by as much as 25 percent in the Upper Green River Basin since 2008, said Keith Guille, spokesman for the Department of Environmental Quality. Gas production in the basin is up 8 percent over that time.

Gov. Matt Mead, state regulators and industry representatives met on Monday to talk about what else companies can do to control pollution.

"We talked about the effectiveness of these contingency plans. We've seen them, they are good. However, we haven't been able to prevent these exceedances," Guille said.

Crumpley said the warnings to stay indoors are hard to take.

"We're all outdoor people here. We don't live inside," she said. "That's why we chose to be here."
