It seems that cultural pride celebrations always carry a stigma about them, some true, many not. I can't remember the last time a knife fight or vandalism broke out at a Chinese New Year parade, yet it seems to be more likely to happen with festivities revolving around Hispanic/Latin American cultures. Same with St. Paddies Day. Being of German decent myself, I'm not really blessed to be able to march around in the street celebrating my heritage for various "historical" reasons/blunders.

You never heard of Octoberfest?

Tonnele avenue isn't the Heights. JC Heights is East of JFK Blvd. Tonnele ave is way downhill from the heights, literally and figuratively.

I was talking about the Heights location, not the JSQ restaurant. If you talk to them, they will make anything. I have had excellent experiences there.

There is a new Egyptian restaurant on JFK, just south of Lake St in the heights. It seems very authentic to me, but I've only spent 2 weeks in Egypt in my life. I don't remember the name or address, but food, staff, and hookah were all great. On the East side of the street.

Hello neighbors,

I would love to watch this from the water. I am an avid Hudson River kayaker, but I don't think a kayak is a good way to watch this. I'd be constantly paddling, and may have to move a good distance depending on visibility.

I can't rent a motorboat since I don't have a NY or NJ permit. Does anybody with a permit want to split a boat rental with me for the day? Or let me and my girlfriend share your own boat for the day? We will compensate with cold beverages, good food, and good cheer.

Re: Car Dealers on 440

Okay, I lied - it's actually FOUR CENTS...

Buying a car from a private seller can save you a lot of money. However, it's only for people with some degree of savviness. A dealership might pressure you with obnoxious sales techniques but they will never sell you a car that they know will throw a rod or lose its brakes within 100 miles.

Dealerships have reputations and business licenses to protect that private sellers don't. The difference between a reliable car that will last you a decade and one that could kill your whole family might be invisible to someone who doesn't now what a master cylinder is supposed to look like.

I'd recommend the dealer route for someone who doesn't have the time to make repairs and is clueless under the hood. If you are buying from a private seller, please have someone with some real knowledge - not just a big talker - look it over first.

Here's my 0.02 on this...

I have bought every vehicle I've ever owned from private sellers, which is the best way to do it IF - and only IF - you are a reasonable judge of character, are (or know) a decent mechanic, and are willing to accept a bit of risk.

My job required me to purchase a new car last year so I ended up grabbing a Honda Accord from Metro Honda on 440.

I spent two weeks going to all the dealers on 440 as well as another half-dozen around Northern NJ.

My 0.02 as a former mechanic and someone who's bought and sold over 20 vehicles in my life is that all dealers are basically the same. I wouldn't recommend one over another. They're all slimy, and just want you out the door owning anything, whether its a good choice for you or not.

The best thing to do is read - and re-read - all the online guides on how to deal with car dealerships. They are pretty accurate. Just google the topic and read them all.

Every dealership works the same way and the advice is good. Basically know what you want, know what its worth, make a reasonable offer, and keep walking away until someone is willing to do the transaction. Don't listen to any pitches, accept any stories, and walk away if they are being too pushy.

They're all going to treat you like you are stupid. Just smile and accept it, find the car you need, offer what it is worth, and let them take it. Ignore their crazy schemes and counter-offers.

He probably claimed residency elsewhere for tax reasons :)

Or else he had a wife and family in the suburbs, and an apartment in JC for overnight rendezvous during work.

Re: Wave of gentrification that leapfrogged the Hudson has reached new heights - Jersey City Heights

I would just like to point out that the Heights has incredible block-to-block diversity. Literally one block can be all well-kept houses with quiet, working inhabitants, and the next block can be noisy and run-down.

I think this explains some of the varying opinions and experiences presented here. It really depends on who your neighbors are in the Heights.

I've been a homeowner here for 2+ years with great neighbors, quiet streets, and zero annoyances. However, I can go for a short walk to experience loud horrendous music and people sitting on stoops all day with paper-bagged bottles.

Hopefully the Heights will continue to trend more toward the former crowd. One can certainly not call the Heights as a whole "gentrified" although some blocks are definitely full of friendly old-timers or young professionals.

There are great deals on rents or properties in the Heights compared to other civilized areas 20 minutes from Manhattan. But I would certainly advise anyone to visit the specific block frequently and at all hours before signing anything.

I never understood why universities sanction these things. It makes as much sense for an institute of higher learning to provide a platform to a rapper as it would for a hospital to host seminars by the Marlboro man.

$200 for a 3-way isn't a bad deal. It would have cost anyone that much for two nice dinners and sufficient liquor, anyway.
