Re: Legislation needed requiring people to identify themselves before they vote!

A valid NJ driver?s license would do. All the new digitized licenses have photos and soon all NJ drivers will have one. For non-drivers, a NJ licensed ID card. People need picture IDs' to fly and many to take trains. You can?t get through life without a picture ID.

Today I returned $8.44 of left over stuff at Loew's. I didn't have a receipt so I had to show my driver's license to make the return!

Using non-English speaking poll workers supports the machine since they won't questions/challenge people who vote under other people's names. Poll workers should be chosen because they live in that district & know people. They're not. I didn't know a soul at my polling place, and I've lived here 24 years and always vote, but HC Board of Election turned me down. They don't want people who might questions how it all works and how poorly it works.

This has got to change..... We can't continue to live in a city that's run like a 3rd world city but our property taxes are in the 1st class category....

I changed a few months ago to Jacky Paramo, 42 Central Avenue by Route 139. 201-222-8200. She's NYU trained, very reasonable, very professional. She's been in JC for about 12 years. She did some bondings for me & her hygienist is very thorough.....
I took a jitney bus up Newark Avenue & he left me off at the first stop on Palisade Avenue & then I walked over.... There's parking there...
She came recommended to me.

Legislation needed requiring people to identify themselves before they vote!

Just can't stay away

In this post 9/11 world, you can?t enter an office building in Manhattan or the JC waterfront without a picture ID. Most office buildings take your photo on the spot for your temp ID, which you must wear. You can?t get on a plane without showing a government authorized picture ID. My mom who lives in a small, rural town in PA couldn?t buy a CD at a new bank without a picture ID so she got a state issued Identification Card! Banks have to comply with the government?s ?Know Your Customer? rules. You can?t cash a check without a picture ID usually a driver?s license. You can?t buy investments on-line without a government ID. You can?t start a corporate job without showing documentation including a photo that you?re a citizen or a Green Card holder. You can?t rent a car without a picture ID if your license doesn?t have one. You need 6 points of ID to get a NJ digital drivers license.

How is it you can walk into any polling place in Jersey City with 250,000 people and vote without showing any ID? I?ve been voting at the main library for the past 24 years. On Tuesday 6/5th, I didn?t know one person handling the books and I always do. I always vote. I applied to the County to be a poll worker and was turned down. They said they have plenty of local, seasoned workers at the downtown polling places. Where were they on the 5th? I pointed out my name, signed and no one scrutinized my signature.

My neighbor was a challenger at School 3 in Downtown and several times during the day, guys walked in impersonating people he knew. Luckily he stopped them but what about the other impersonators? I?m sure this was repeated many times on the 5th. I got an email regarding 2 women at a major condo building in Journal Square who went to vote in their building but found someone else had voted using their names! A friend voted at Grace Church in downtown and said not one poll worker spoke a word of English. How can they challenge if they don?t speak English in a predominately English speaking gentrified neighborhood?

I still get sample ballots for tenants who moved out 3-5 years ago. Every time I send them back with a note that they?ve moved. I still get them. Maybe the issue is people are voting under their names? Tens of thousands of new residents have moved into JC and JC like Hoboken has a huge annual, turn-over rate. I don?t know half my neighbors anymore. In a low turn-out election, especially a primary, this could easily impact who wins. Elections have been won by a 1 vote margin. We?ve seen election fraud at the federal level. This is Hudson County, notorious for fraud! You can?t open a paper without reading about some scam.

We already have issues with the computerized voting machines that lack a paper trail. Our democracy is based on fair and honest elections. Anyone who has lived in Jersey City for some time has heard of all the ?street money? changing hands on Election Day. We?ve met people who sold their vote for $20. Now with all the new faces, it couldn?t be easier to steal votes. Elections cost hundreds of thousands of dollars here so what?s a few more to get the hired guns to vote multiple times under other people?s names?

Folks it?s time for us to move into the 21st century and protect our democracy by insisting that everyone show a government issued picture ID. Our democratic system is at risk. Legislation must be passed requiring picture IDs? to vote in any election. New York has it.

Re: JC Municipal Utilities Authority - history of mismanagement
#64
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Steve Fulop is asking assistance from an operational view. Getting the JC MUA to fix the flooding and sewage backing up into people's homes when it rains. They're pleading poverty but then they cut North Bergen a sweet heart deal at our expense.....

I'm asking people to contact the following people:

US Attorney Christopher Christie
US Attorney's Office
970 Broad Street, Room 700
Newark, NJ 07102

Attorney General Stuart Rabner
State of New Jersey
PO Box 080
Trenton NJ 08625

Public Advocate Ronald Chen
State of New Jersey
240 West State Street, 16th Floor
PO Box 851
Trenton, NJ 08625

Assemblyman Brian Stack
3715 Palisade Avenue, 3rd floor
Union City, NJ 07087

Just a quick note asking them to investigate the JC MUA deal with North Bergen, which the taxpayers of Jersey City will be subsidizing. Processing North Bergen's waste and rainwater will add approx 24% to the JC load, which the system can't handle as it is. Plus we have thousands of new housing units coming on line in the next 2 years as it is....

The North Bergen deal will hurt us financially for generations as well as make our quality of life worse....

JC Municipal Utilities Authority - history of mismanagement
#65
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Earl Morgan of the Jersey Journal and I discuss the history and mismanagement at the JC MUA. Find out how the money has been squandered filling in city budget deficits to avoid tax increases in election years. No money is available to repair an aging 140+ year old system while new housing is added every day. We've averaged 7% rate increases for the last 10 years but there's no money. The JC MUA has been loosing multi-millions of dollars ever year since they were established in 1998. Learn about the North Bergen deal which will only exasperate our flooding and raw sewage problems while the JC MUA collects pennies from them. The JC ratepayers / taxpayers will be subsidizing the North Bergen taxpayers for decades. North Bergen is about 24% of the size of Jersey City. We need to expose this bad deal. Everyone in JC suffers.

31st District endorsements - Talking Politics
#66
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Endorsements.... Primary Election- Tuesday, June 5th
You can build all the condos in the world, even at full taxes, but unless we get some decent local and state government there will NEVER be enough money to cover the cost of corruption and waste. The infrastructure will continue to deteriorate as your hard earned tax dollars are squandered on patronage and NO-BID contracts. Whoever wins Tuesday's Primary wins the General Election. It's that simple. We need your vote and Primaries are always low voter turn-out. We need the taxpayers and middle class voters, who are not beholden to the pols, i.e. jobs, city or county, out there voting tomorrow!

Lou Manzo has been a very hard working, accessible and knowledgeable Assemblyman and we need him in the Senate. He's been on Talking Politics TV show several times and has never declined an invite to speak about the issues unlike Sandra Cunningham, a no show, and soon to be former Assemblyman Dr Charles Epps. In the 20 plus years I've lived here, Lou has been the only Assemblyman you could reach out to and take action. Electing Sandra Bolden Cunningham for State Senate would be 5 steps backwards to the dark ages. See Friday's Star Ledger article written by a seasoned reporter, really summed it up from an outsiders perspective. This Hudson politician is an insult to the voters.
For the 31st district please vote for Lou Manzo for State Senate - 1B - Democrats for Hudson County.

For 31st District Assembly - Please SPLIT YOUR VOTE.... Nicholas Chiaravalloti - 2B and Anthony Chiappone - 3A. You can see them on my tv show streaming off our website.
Nick Chiaravalloti, 2B is smart, an attorney and has years of economic development and legislative experience at the local level under his belt. He's a great candidate and you can't say that very often. My other State Assembly endorsement is Tony Chiappone, 3A, who never should have lost to Dr Charles Epps. The talk 2 years ago was if elected, Dr Epps would get JC more state school aid but ironically we've had our aid reduced since he became the poster boy for Abbott School spending abuse. Tony Chiappone initially sponsored the bill that convicted pols in office would forfeit their pensions. That's the only way to stem the rampant political corruption which is costing us taxpayers tens of millions in higher taxes. Once Tony left the Assembly the bill died until recently when it was re-introduced.
I was not impressed with Sheila Newton Moses, who was on my show, and she never admitted that she was the owner of Sunnyside Academy. See Fridays' Jersey Journal article, "Say candidate's company owes J.C. schools $555K". The article is not on-line but you can see it on our homepage.

In the 31st, I also support Joseph Cassidy for Sheriff 5B and Mary Jane Desmond 6B for County Clerk.. Quite frankly the County Clerk's position should not be an elected one. That's another TV show...

Help us turn this place around....Don't forget to vote tomorrow.... Independents declare as Democrats so you have some say in government in HC... A good voter turn out would scare the pols and change history... Polls are open from 6AM to 8PM......

I interviewed the 4 candidates & Jenny Garcia would be another slug on the board.... That's the problem, the pols and teachers union love people who can't read a financial statement / budget & then they buy them off with favors or jobs.... See my TV show which streams off our website. The budget has gone to almost $633 million with a school employee for every 5 kids! Janitors & painters making over $200k with OT! McCann knows the issues & can read a financial and is not afraid to ask questions, unlike the others.... Slugs will bankrupt us. The state is not going to keep shelling out the big bucks forever.... The JC taxpayers only pay about 18% of the school budget!

I'd take Jerry McCann over Jenny Garcia any day... We need rable rousers to question all this out of control spending before we all go broke.... and the kids still can't read!

This Hudson politician is an insult to the voters
Friday, June 01, 2007
To find the worst that New Jersey politics has to offer, go to the regions where one party dominates. The machines there are so cocky about their winning streaks that they've lost all perspective.

The latest example is Sandra Cunningham, who is running for Senate as the choice of the infamous Hudson County Democrats.

It's been a rough few months for her. First came the revelation that a convicted child rapist was working for her campaign, even collecting signatures for her.

Then the Jersey Journal reported that a foundation she runs has been spending almost all its money on parties and overhead, including a salary for her.

Add her conviction for drunken driving in 2005, and the fine she paid for riding the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail without a ticket in 2006, and you have a candidate with lots of explaining to do.

But Cunningham is blessed with that special quality you often find among New Jersey politicians -- she has no idea how bad all this looks to the rest of the world. She is living in the bubble, blissfully clueless.

So she spoke freely yesterday during an hourlong interview at a Jersey City diner, feeling no pain as she banged a hammer on her head, over and over.

Take Russell Wallace, the campaign volunteer who was convicted by a jury of raping a 13-year-old girl when he was 37. Cunningham insists that he is not guilty.

"He always said he was innocent, and I personally believe he's innocent," she says.

Asked about her charitable foundation, she says its purpose is to provide "training and education" to the disadvantaged. But she defends making its single largest payment on a party she threw to commemorate the death of her husband, Glenn Cunningham, who was both mayor of Jersey City and a state senator.

"The city was in mourning," she says. "I would do it again to help heal the city."

One more. Asked about the drunken driving conviction, she said she was at a brunch with friends and had a bit too much wine that day.

The ticket, it turns out, shows that police pulled her over at 10:55 p.m. with a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit. Must have been quite a long brunch with an irresistible wine.

You have to wonder: Is this really the best and the brightest of Hudson County?

"We endorsed her because we thought she was an outstanding individual with a lot of character," says Sen. Bernard Kenny, chairman of the county party. "And I think she's on the right side of the issues."

Really? We've had a glimpse of her character, so let's take a look at the issues.

Cunningham says her main concerns are crime, jobs and housing. Sounds reasonable. So how would she address those problems?

"I have not really come up with solutions," she says. "We need to come up with an urban plan, to try to come up with programs that address these issues."

She mentions the need to break the barriers former prison inmates face when they try to get jobs, a serious problem we'll be hearing more about. But beyond that, she really has nothing to say.

The truth is the Democratic Party chose Cunningham because her husband was popular, and because she's an African-American candidate in a district where roughly half the voters are, too. Her opponent in Tuesday's primary, Assemblyman Lou Manzo, is white.

"She would be the first African-American senator from Hudson County, and I think that matters," Kenny says.

Yes, it does. But isn't there more to it?

One final note: Party organizations do best when turnout is low, because they can win with a small core of activists. The last time New Jersey had a primary like this, with just legislative candidates on the ballot, only 9 percent of eligible voters bothered to vote.

So for the machines, Tuesday is likely to be a good day.

Meet 4 candidates for JC School Board Election - Latest Talking Politics TV show

Current Show - Meet 4 of the 11 candidates running for the JC Board of Ed...... The election is Tuesday, April 17th. The polls are open from 2Pm to 9PM...
Meet Jenny Garcia, Jenny Campbell, Gerald McCann and the incumbent Angel Valentin. Judge for yourself... It's a sad lot we have to choose from and it was painfully obvious during the show. Jerry McCann was by far the most knowledgeable and could discuss the finances which is a huge issue.
The budget went from $184.5 Million in 1989 with 27,727 students at a cost of $6,652/student. At that time the JC taxpayers paid 40% of the budget.
The proposed 2007 budget is $633 million for 29,683 public students, 3,313 charter school students, and 5,590 employees.... My math comes up with $20,208/public school student. Charter schools spend less.... The JC taxpayers pay about 18% of the budget but there's real pressure to have Trenton cut aid which they have. The suburbs are squawking over the massive spending spree over the years with not much to show for it all...The number of teachers, aides as well as administrators is high. The OT is insane...
The show has been revised with updated financial info and that version will be streaming off the website soon, http://www.talkingpolitics.net. 36 other shows are also streaming.

Current Show - Downtown/Newport JC Traffic / Transit Study ........
This is a 29 minute show of a 3+ hour public meeting held on March 1st. This was the 3rd public meeting with Vollmer Associates and the city's Planning Department. Once again the Jersey Avenue highway extension was a hot issue. The next public meeting is scheduled for April 25th when the consultants will present their final recommendations.
If the wrong options are selected, this "Circulation Study" could have a devastating impact on downtown traffic, air quality, pedestrian and mass transit safety as more cars are routed through our neighborhoods. Many of these will be commuter cars and suburbanites who fail to use mass transit and see our neighborhoods as another BQE to the waterfront or Holland Tunnel. Personally I have been going to Eyecare Contacts at the Newport Mall for years. For glasses, try Lensecrafters which is right next to Eyecare. if you're unhappy with your glasses you have 30 days to return them unlike Savoy. I bought a pair of glasses at Savoy & Siegel & never wore them.... They were a very bad fit for my needs, bifocals....never again.

Ross, thanks for clearing the confusion.... I stand by my statement that being an independent locks you out of most elections, the local representation.... As the old saying goes, "All politics is local ".

But you can still vote in the mayoral election- non-partisan..

Grovester stated " Apparently, they said at the polls yesterday, that everyone was Independent and could choose when they got to the polls on primary day."

That was what I was commenting on, the everyone part... His statement implied that I could change to Republican on that date if I so chose. That took me by surprise.

Yes, I know an independent can vote in a NJ primary and I think it's a good thing. I agree that Common Cause NJ etc should promote that....

No one mentioned that to me at the polls but I went at an odd hour. I'm not aware of the law. My expereince years ago when a bunch of us wanted to vote in the republican primary, anti-Schundler vote, we had to file change of party forms by a 4-6 week deadline date. It's good if that has changed.

I'm sure many independents stayed away not knowing they could declare a party on primary day. I've spoken to independents in the past who never realized that by the time they get to the polls in November it's a done deal on the local level....They prided themselves on not having an affiliation but they missed the prime opportunity to have a choice....

It's all about the apathy.... 19% of the registered Democrats voted and I'm sure most were straight party line voters. It's amazing to see that 49.4% of Hudson County's registered voters are independents, which is a waste in HC. Whoever wins the primary, wins the general election so independents don't even participate in the process. See http://www.hudsoncountyclerk.org/cgi-bin/election.pl for the election results...

No, it's not.... Vas is running against the endorsed machine politican so what do you expect? Most of the HC pols could never get elected on their own. Unless the party puts them on the ticket they'd never get elected so consequently they'll never support someone not endorsed by the HCDO. That's how it works... Only those who fall in line get selected by the HCDO....

That'll change when people take notice and get informed... hopefully soon before we're bankrupted....

Tuesday- June 6th - Primary Elections
Tomorrow is Election Day. In Hudson County whoever wins the Democratic Party's primary wins the General Election since the Republican Party is practically non-existent. Independents can elect to vote in the primary. If you're an independent, at the poll, tell the worker you choose to vote in the Democratic primary. Being an independent in Hudson County is like giving away your vote...

One of the open seats is our district's rep to the US House of Representatives to replace Bob Menendez, who was selected to fill Jon Corzine's US Senate seat when he became Governor January 1st....

Talking Politics is endorsing Joe Vas - 2C on the ballot.. He's running against the HC Democratic Party's endorsed candidate Albio Sires, the current speaker of the NJ Assembly. On our website, I've pasted links to various news articles and their bill sponsorships. They're both currently in the NJ Assembly in Trenton.

Vas is the primary sponsor for assembly bill A957 which "Provides for mandatory forfeiture of retirement benefits of elected official convicted of crime involving office held". Tony Chiappone introduced that bill last year but unfortunately lost his seat to Charlie Epps Jr, who has done nothing but "Londongate" may kill his Assembly career. No loss... This bill is not supported by the HCDO. This bill has teeth. The corruption in this state, articularly Hudson County, will bankrupt us... We need that bill. See our website, "Indicted Officials" for a listing of HC pols indicted.

Vas has sponsored 95 bills to Sires 22 for this year. Sires is a one of the sponsors for A3190 - "Permits a local realty transfer fee on property located in cities of the first class." Jersey City, Newark & Paterson are the 3 first class cities. That's more taxes! Sellers of real estate already pay a transfer realty tax to the state but now they want a city tax.

See my JC Budget TV show ( which streams off our Talking Politics website) on the public hearing for JC's SFY 2006 budget. We got socked with an 18% tax increase to cover MORE HIRING/ PATRONAGE plus the city/Healy did an early retirement BUT has hired back many of the folks so they now collect TWO paychecks! The more you give them, the more they squander. There is no shame under the Healy administration!

Stand up & vote so we can break this absolute power of the HCDO which corrupts absolutely..... PLEASE VOTE!

VOTE FOR Joe Vas - 2C

Tomorrow--- Tuesday, June 6th

6 AM to 8 pm - polls open
your regular polling district
