Will they truly put in more work into being a council member? Not saying they should put in twice as much time on twice as much of a salary, they were underpaid for their work, but I really despise the fact that people can hold multiple public positions in New Jersey, and part of the aim of this salary increase should put an end to it. Holding a separate private sector job or running a business is far less of an issue and common with locally elected officials around the country.

I don't care one way or the other about this - never stayed in one, nor have I noticed any effect from any AirBnB's in my neighborhood (have no idea if there are any) but won't Jersey City miss the nearly $2 million in added tax revenue? How do they propose to replace that money?

Here's the more obvious question - why is Senator Cunningham even bothering with this B.S. ? This is another case of cart before the horse.
Voter turnout among people who actually are allowed to vote in the USA is abysmal - around 55% in national elections (49% in the 1996 presidential election!). Even less in local elections that don't run concurrently with national elections - Jersey City mayoral and city council races of 25, 30% if we're lucky. Former mayor Healy loved the low turnout because it's exactly what kept him in office for three terms. When turnout went up a few percentage points more in 2013, it was enough to get him out of office. School board elections? Unless they are concurrent with some other election, fuhgeddaboudit. If turnout is so pitiful among people with clean background checks, can you imagine the turnout among people who have felonies on their record, can't find jobs and some of whom (not all) are contemplating a return to crime? This whole effort is a total waste of time and won't bring very many more people to the polling stations. Rather than focusing on something that will do nothing, politicians and their constituents should be focusing on increasing voter turnout in this country and strive for the 70 to 80% levels that Canada and Europe have had (maybe not quite that high now but I can assure you both places are still significantly higher than the United States). Then we reach the voter turnout levels we should be having, that's when this issue should be addressed. Of course no politician is going to make an effort toward such a goal unless it increases their own chances of being elected.

I know someone in New York City who sublet a room in the apartment he was renting and the person suddenly quit paying and it took six months to get them evicted. Six months without getting their share of the rent, not to mention the attorney fees. At the end of the day it's like those old SRO/boardinghouses they had in NYC which were mostly gone by the 70s, with private bathrooms for each unit and a communal kitchen instead of a full-service dining room. What goes around comes around, I guess.

I figure with Jersey City's close proximity to New York there must be some people around here who either went or knew somebody that did. For those who don't know, it was supposed to be a large, luxury music festival in the Bahamas with several headliners including Blink 182, with luxury villas on a beautiful beach located on a private island, with top-line catering and all kinds of things that would make it a five star experience. Then people got there and the accommodations were these unsecured disaster relief tents on a mostly gravel beach, port-a-potties and three portable showers, none of the promised headliner music acts, and a local caterer that served these crummy boxed lunches. People desperately tried to get back to the USA but ended up locked in a small airport for something like 12 hours with no food or water (some people passed out from the heat). It was something like Lord of the Flies meets Woodstock, except the music sucked.
It happened almost two years ago but is now back in the news because of two different documentaries released about it. If you walk around New York long enough you either meet someone who went or meet someone who knew someone that went. Anyone out there care to share some firsthand accounts? Just curious.

How was this dress code racist? I've seen people of all races wearing the items described on the list. It is within the owner's rights to say what he doesn't want people wearing inside his establishment. Did somebody see some kind of subtle overtone from the list and get offended? Just don't patronize the place if you have a problem with it.

Though I have to say it is pretty funny the place was right across the street from the courthouse. Lady should have had a less conspicuous location.

Can't speak to the amenities, they seem decent enough at the place, but the map showing the so-called shopping and dining near the place is hilarious. Nearby shopping consists of Acme, Walgreens, Home Depot and the Hudson Mall. Nearby dining consists of Wendys, Jollibee and Wonder Bagels. Oh boy! Sign me up, I can't wait to move in.
The monthly rents are insane for that area, and the place has no pool, but they are waiving the application and amenity fees, so I guess that's something. They must be banking on the place being so new inside to attract renters.

Perhaps the one thing nobody has mentioned here is that even though the guy is a convicted felon, he is not a sex offender, so Megan's Law doesn't apply and there was no obligation to inform the building tenants ahead of time, nor any issues with the guy living within a certain distance of children.
If the guy is truly causing problems in the building and the landlord is not doing anything about it, you can always call the police.

You can put up whatever you want in the building, if the landlord allows it. Whether you can post this in a park or some other public area, I don't know, but I see peoples' posters for all kinds of things in public areas throughout the city all the time (although not for something like this). You could always put it up and see how long before a city worker notices it, and takes it down. Once the cat is out of the bag, it doesn't go back in so easily.

I'll put in my 2 cents here, hopefully it helps.
When looking at a 2-family home like the one you spoke of, because the duplex shared a sewer line, a realtor told me the law required an HOA to be formed and an outside management company to handle payment of water and sewer bills. I don't know if there is such a law, and though it seems silly to use an outside management company just to pay a water bill for 2 units (because there probably won't be much else for them to do), but I think it is a necessary evil because the water/sewer bill has to be paid somehow and who wants to deal with the awkwardness of asking your neighbor for money every month.
