this is really terrible news...

not sure if this belongs in this thread, but thought it was worth mentioning.

last summer, while at a red light, a Hummer made a right turn and drove straight into me.

I flagged an officer down, who filled out the report, but REFUSED to address the fact that the driver was STINKING DRUNK. I'm talking about bleary eyes, beer breath, wobbly, the works! The guy even told me he drank a 6-pack.

The cops were INSISTENT that the man wasn't drunk, and their attitude was a way of telling me not to push the issue.

Why would JC's cops ALLOW for a drunk driver to get back into the truck and go home?

My only guess is that it was the end of their shift and they didn't want the extra work...

1849 in the West Village, added 20% to a check, and we were only 2 people.

i explained to the waitress that I had planned on giving her a 20% tip anyway (despite the bad service), but that putting it on the check was tacky. she explained that a lot of students and europeans come in and don't tip at all, so the bad starting adding it to food/drink tabs.

i didn't know this was illegal, and now feel like reporting it.

for what it's worth, i asked KAWS to participate in my group art show that took place in October, and he declined. I thought it would have been fun for him to show in the town he grew up in.

without sounding like i am being condescending, i think he just got too big for his own hometown.

sounds like my friend was the victim of this group OVER A YEAR AGO. she was walking in journal square when a car pulled up and a girl and guy got out and grappled with her. she told me they got into a waiting car and drove off...i couldn't understand how two people that mugged her would have a car waiting for them.
i guess i was naive to think that muggers didn't work in packs like that...seems so cruel and heartless to go out and rob people as a group activity...

female friend grabbed by two men at journal square
#71
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

hello,

my female friend who just moved into my building called me and told me she was assaulted by two men at journal square.

she said one asked her for a cigarette, as she was walking past the payphone/plaza area. she gave one a cigarette, and then walked away to continue home. the other one yelled at something to her, like "why you so rude?", and demanded another cigarette.

i think she was scared they may follow her, so she went to give the other guy a cigarette, and then they grabbed her arms and tried to walk her away. she was telling them to let go of her, and they were not letting go. she was very scared, and able to break free, and ran the 3 blocks home from the square.

she asked me if this sort of thing happens a lot around here, and i told her that was the very first time i have heard of anything like that. i told her that she should call the police, and at least notify them that two strange guys are grabbing women in the fountain area of JSQ. she felt maybe she was being paranoid, but we both agreed that a line has been crossed when someone GRABS your arm forcibly and won't let go.

i told her to call the non-emergency line and report the incident. i hope she follows through.

but, we both wondered, what would the cops do, if anything at all?

they really need to have a stronger police presence at JSQ at night. i don't think people feel safe walking through there.

she said the two men looked shabby and homeless. she said one looked like a really bad drag queen (no joke). she said, he wasn't looking glammed up....just like a weird gross cross dresser. she said the other one looked cracked out and scary.

just a warning to you all....

already posted? awesome building at 111 First Street

Just can't stay away

I don't recall reading about this on the forum, so here goes:

Jersey City announced yesterday [Feb. 26th] that it has commissioned OMA [the Office for Metropolitan Architecture] to design a 1.2 million square foot mixed use tower at 111 First Street in the city?s growing waterfront development. The program will include condos, artist live/work studios & gallery, ?public amenities?, hotel, some retail, and parking.

Now, to answer the question that you must have after looking at this model: yes, the design is basically three separate buildings stacked on top of one another to form a 52 storey tower. The volumes serve to separate the various elements of the building?s program into different ?boxes? - public spaces & hotel, artists studios and galleries, and deeper apartments. In order to ?maximize views? these volumes are stacked perpendicular to one another, and as a by-product create roof terraces on the 17th and 36th floors - for the hotel & spa, and shared terraces for the residential units. As a means to ?activate? these terraces, dynamic programs such as the spa, restaurant, galleries, etc, are placed along them.

i think the only solution is to rig your front door, Cape Fear style, and wait with a shotgun.

this really sucks. the police in this city do nothing to prevent crime.

i saw a burglar OBVIOUSLY casing parked cars for things to steal (walking by each car, and looking through the windows). i called the non-emergency number, and noone came to look for this guy.

it seems the cops just barely want to respond once a crime has a occurred.

we need better police!

hitchhiking through Holland Tunnel? has anyone done it?

I am temping at an office that is literally JUST outside of the Holland Tunnel at Canal and Varick.
When i walk out of work, it's very tempting to just try to hitch a ride through the tunnel. instead, i walk 15 mins either to WTC or Christopher Street. i am very curious how i could go about safely grabbing a ride with a stranger through the tunnel....

-this sounds like a tv show i'd love to watch.

how come not one mention of the VIP?

maybe i am biased, as it's just around the block from me. the dinners are usually so-so, but the breakfasts are delicious. i recommend the 'waffle special'.

i've tried Al's before...that's the one on Communipaw, right? the open tuna melt sandwich was decent, but that was years ago.

if you're ever out in harrisson/east newark, do make a point to find the excellent Tops Diner.
