Re: Heights to get a new police station?

There is a public relations and marketing benefit to having a police station presence with associated cops and activity in the middle of a shopping and commercial area.

People like to see police around the place.

Tire = rubber exterior covering of a wheel.

Wheel = the entire assembly of wheel-rim and tire.

They stole the wheels, not the just the tires.

Interesting that good old Alb was ahead of her time - Jersey City under Fulop introduced a legal graffiti art program just like she suggested.

Caterpillars in Trees.
#65
Home away from home
Home away from home

Can anyone shed light on the plague of caterpillars that are currently covering trees downtown? Seems to be trees of all varieties impacted, my cherry tree has them, as do the plane trees, pear trees, seems indiscriminate.

The tree branches are covered in unsightly clumps of silk, with hundreds of caterpillars inside. The caterpillars that emerge from the clumps are small, white and hairy.

Anyone know what species this is, are they a new kind of moth that has infested this area? Or is this nornal, and I just haven't noticed it before?

Is it a threat to our trees? Should I cut the clumps off and kill the caterpillars? The birds don't seem to be eating them.

I have not noticed this in previous years.

This building is ugly beyond belief.

Even in comparison to other cheap towers going up around town by Lefrak and the like, this building looks horrible even against that low bar.

Really the architect should be ashamed.

Edit: Architect is Hollwich Kushner (HWKN)

The Paulus Hook Neighborhood Association is even officially called "Historic Paulus Hook Association", so originally at least, historic preservation was important to them.

If they don't go to bat for this, then I can't see they have any shred of that historic mission left.

If the Historic districts mean anythng at all, surely they won't be allowed to demolish this building.

Why can't it continue to be used as a school, the purpose for which it was built?

The funny thing about these new bathroom rules is that it was city/state law that mandated (and I suspect still mandates) separate male and female bathrooms to begin with.

Restaraunts, bars, stores and establishments in general, would in most cases be only too happy to spend less space and effort maintaining one bathroom instead of two.

The overreaction to these snowfalls gets more absurd each time.

Last time, not content with closing for one day, Jersey City schools closed the second day, despite no snow falling, because "there was a risk of ice".

Astonishingly ugly! I appreciate that can be said about most of these modern towers, but your average Lefrak tower, though bad, looks nicer than this carbuncle.

Soviet style brutalist architecture, out of scale and with no redeeming qualities.

On the rear side, which you can't see in the photos, is a huge windowless wall with channels of cinder-block covered with some green siding material. I can only pray that they intend to construct some other structure to cover that part, as the way it looks now is dire.

How is the land value portion calculated? Is there a formula based on lot size and location?

Examples I have looked at seem inconsistent, even for properties in the same neighbourhood.

I heard a rumor that the Lotus (no longer Blue Lotus) Indian restaurant in Vladimir's space on Erie at Eighth Street is up for sale again, though I can't find it mentioned anywhere.

The food in the latest incarnation was/is decent, didn't seem to change much when switching from Blue Lotus to Lotus.

So attorney Mark Steier is going to sue the city, that will clearly help keep taxes down for everyone.

Newport Mall is a good deal, around $100 per month, if you are a resident of Hamilton Park area you receive a discount.

If you have a connection with another country, may be worth considering that option for college.

My loosely-formed plan is to send my daughter to University back home in England. Unfortunately, despite her and me having British passports, we will have to pay foreign student rate in England as I have been in USA so long and am now tax domiciled here.

However, even the foreign student rates at UK Universities are considerably lower than those for USA colleges.

I know a few other ex-pat families planning similar.

Both Ezpass and toll booths have already been made redundant by number plate recognition technology.

Just drive on the road and the toll is charged to your account, is done on roads in England.

Agreed Brewster, there is a huge need for sports fields in Jersey City, Liberty State Park could fit a dozen, and still have plenty of quiet nature space left.

Another thing they should put in Liberty State Park is the mother of all dog runs, some massive 20 acre thing, I don't have a dog, just want dog-people to have somewhere to go.

http://craigslist.org

On all of them you will be presented with many dealers posing as private sellers, but there are genuine sellers in there too, you can generally tell after perusing the ads awhile. Even if you can't tell, you're no worse off than going straight to a dealer, at least this way you have a concrete price you are working with.

The noitceboards around Hamilton park sometimes have cars too.
