What Obama does or does not do will have very little to do with the outcome. It is a global situation now. It is all based on human perceptions, attitudes, fears, hopes and dreams. That is all the economy is based on. It is not and never will be a science.

I don't see why the hospital would think it appropriate to dispose of a body, stillborn or not. It is very common for parents of stillborn babies to have memorial services and burial or cremation. This is not the first stillborn they have had to deal with. I'm sure they have a standard procedure to handle this situation which would probably involve a grief counselor who would ascertain the parents wishes and intentions. I can't imagine how a morgue attendant would come to the decision to discard a body. Was it his first day on the job?

I agree, shoot first ask questions later that's how I roll, the element of surprise is everything. Unfortunately for them, everyone I have maced so far was just walking up to me to ask for directions but hey, you can't be too careful. I graciously repeat the directions a few times while they are sitting on the curb rubbing their eyes so they will remember them 45 minutes later when their vision returns.

As much as it sucks, the towing happens for a reason. That being the greed of the Newport Mall owners in charging from the very first minute to park in their garages. There used to be a very reasonable 2 hour grace period to park in the Newport garage. I used to go in the mall back then, I haven't been in there in years. Does anybody know if they even had the decency to suspend the first 2 Hr parking fee for the holiday season like the cities do with the parking meters?

NYC counts record number of homeless families

Associated Press - December 22, 2008 10:55 PM ET

Corrected Version

NEW YORK (AP) - The number of homeless families staying in New York City shelters has hit its highest level in 25 years.

The Coalition for the Homeless says a record 9,720 families stayed in shelters in the month of November. That breaks a previous high of 9,500 in September 2007. It's 13% higher than a count of 8,607 families in May.

The coalition says it's the highest number of documented homeless families since the city began keeping count in 1983.

Homeless advocates fear the number could jump even higher if the economic turmoil in the city worsens.

City Department of Homeless Services officials say the city is equipped to handle the increase and is serving all homeless families.

Great Depression II

Home away from home
Home away from home

I keep hearing horror stories from economists, the worst is yet to come. A second and even bigger wave of mortgage defaults is on the way. Every state is in budgetary distress. Banks are not lending to businesses, business are collapsing or laying off workers, workers are afraid to spend money. It's a vicious cycle. And how many more Madhoffs are hiding out there? I'm not much of a worrier but what worries me is that the experts have no idea how to fix it. In the depression of the 1930's, it took WWII to revive the economy. Seems to me that the Federal Gov is in a state of low key panic and totally clueless about a solution. I am throwing this out here because I know that JCList posters have the answers to most of the worlds problems but nobody ever listens. If you post your economic solutions here, the webmaster would feel compelled to print them out and take them down to Washington and put them before some House committee.

"Mr. Chairman, I hold in my hands an economic stimulous plan authored by an esteemed member of the JCList community, a Mr. Fat Ass Bike"

I always thought LSC was part of the state park system. I guess not. Anyway, rich people donate money all the time to universities, hospitals etc. 2.5MIL is peanuts to a rich guy(or gal). Doesn't LSC have a department that solicits gifts and donations? Yes, for big money you gotta name something after the gift giver but who cares? As long as it's not Trump. 70%! WTF! I'm NOT paying it. I will board up my doors and windows and and not answer the phone. They will NEVER get me out of here. Why do these schools cost so much anyway? Why does it take 12 years to teach a kid to read and write? And why do we need all these kids anyway? We have enough kids now, we don't need anymore and they don't need to be so damn smart either. They just need to be smart enough to wipe our ass and make us soup when we get older. That's all that matters. I don't really care about the future of the human race, just my own comfort in my old age. When I'm dead, then the job of the human race is done.

An unfortunate incident but it makes me wonder. Do people get progressively dumber as they get older? How does this work? We start out dumb and get progressively smarter. Except for the years between 14 and 20 where there is a precipitious, and as yet, unexplained drop in intelligence. We then resume the upward trend but where is the apex in this learning curve? At what age is the breakpoint and the ensuing steady decline? 40? 50? 60? This scenario holds true for most people but I myself seem to be an anomily. I just keep getting smarter and smarter. I calculate that at this rate, by the time I am 91 I will have the intelligence of 17 Albert Einsteins. I will NOT stand there holding the toilet handle down to keep the house from exploding. I will TAPE it down. It must really suck to not be me. You may think this post cruel and insensitive but you must realize, I am smarter than you and will be even more smarter than you tomorrow.

I can't even find the words..........well, I'll try anyway.

I am strongly opposed to renaming streets for ANY reason. Change is ALWAYS bad. I am still upset about renaming Hudson Blvd. for JFK. Not that I have anything against JFK but what connection did he have with Hudson Co. besides being a Democrat. Anyway, I don't even know who Morgan (Morgan St.) was but I'm sure, whoever he was, he is more worthy of the street name than that clown Trump. The guy has a reality TV show for Christ sake!I remember reading that Trump really had no interest in building in JC but was enticed into this project with the promise of having the buildings named after him with little or no investment on his part. What other developer has a street named after them around here? Is there a LeFrak St. ? Maybe there is, I dunno but at least he was a pioneer on the waterfront. Who in JC government proposed this idea? I want names. Who thought is was a good idea to honor "The Donald" with his own street?

"Cahn also said he was unaware that the City Council was considering an ordinance to put the Trump name on a Jersey City street."

Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnn! You're full of $hit. This was "unwritten" into the deal from day one.

"When the public was allowed to speak, local resident Della Womack questioned the purpose of the ordinance, eliciting laughter and applause.
?What is Trump doing for the city of Jersey City to be able to have a street named after him?? Womack said."

No Della, the question is - what can WE do for The Donald?

"The existence of Trump Plaza: Jersey City is actually cited in the ordinance as the reason for renaming Morgan Street, saying, ?it is both fitting and appropriate to commemorate the importance of these projects.?"

Was this line stolen from The Gettysburg Address?

It seems to me that that's really quite a bit more than a studio costs in most of the country.

So, if the economy tanks, and the economy here becomes more like the economy in the rest of the economy, then maybe you need to pay just $75,000 to get your money back in 10 years.

On the other hand: if an investment holds half of its value over time, maybe that would be a good deal in a really rotten economy where all investments were doing poorly and inflation was running at 10 percent every year.
