Hi everyone, I am new to the board and a bit clueless about Jersey City (and surrounding towns) geography, so I am hoping you all can help? I have friends that live in the Heights, near Grove, Union City, Weehawken, and I am getting conflicting stories about the commute time to NYC.

I am opening my own boutique in the Garment District and want to move from Central New Jersey so I can be 25 - 30 minutes away from my boutique. My boutique will be on 38th betw. 8th/9th aves so I can come into Penn Station, 33rd Path, or Port Authority 42nd. What areas would you suggest I check out? I want to be able to get to work in 25-30 minutes by public transport. I have a car, but I don't want to have to pay the high prices of parking/Ezpass, etc. Oh, and I don't want to spend more than $1500/month for rent...if I could get a 1 bedroom or squeeze out 1 bedroom plus small den/office that I can have guests stay in, that would be perfect.

Hope you all can help!
Diane

you have options. the best in my opinion is grove street.

I concur. The ride to 33rd is about 20 min so it would be just your walk time on either side that would dictate the rest. And - I think the rents around there would fit into that budget as opposed to being closer to Newport. I think JSQ would put you outside that timeframe.

I have a lot of friends that do the bus into Port Authority but it's very unpredictable because of traffic.

[size=small]My usual dogsitter has also got to leave town while I am away over Memorial day weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice on kennels/dog boarding in JC. I have 2 smallish dogs. I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks

I know others have had mixed experiences but we (both humans and doggies) love Boca's Play n Stay (www.bocasplaynstay.com). I judge a place by our dogs' reactions when we pull up to it and I can tell you that our dogs know the route there and start getting excited 1/2 mile away. They pull on their leashes all the way inside and don't look back when we leave.

They have both indoor and outdoor play areas now which is great with the nice weather.

Gutter repair/replacement

so - this rain has taught me that I need new gutters or to really repair and reconfigure my existing gutters. Anyone have any experience with doing this themselves or hiring someone to do it?

Degree of difficulty? Cost? We have a 4-story row house.

Thanks!

So think about it, how much actual speeding can we do with the potholes?

Can the new lights and trees be taken all the way down Newark Avenue?

I understand there might not be enough money to brick sidewalk everything but lights and trees would really pull all of downtown Newark Avenue together.

Where is the funding coming from? It would be nice to at least carry the new lights and trees "look" to Brunswick -- if not all the way to the turnpike overpass.

I agree. There is life after Jersey Ave and it's frustrating that small businesses there who are trying to make it are left out a lot. (and yes, I am affiliated with one of them)

But, any improvement is good. For sure.

Grilled beef with lemongrass on vermicelli is my personal fav (along with the pho, cha gio, summer rolls, etc.)

The premise that a propane grill is illegal but a charcoal one is ok is a little odd, don't you think? I can see the flame (charcoal/propane) vs. no flame (electric) issue as being possible...

Are they thinking of the explosive vs non-explosive? Are they even thinking?

Savoy & Siegel on Newark Ave by Grove St is decent. The only problem is you ALWAYS have to wait. If you make an appointment, you just wait less. But, the turnaround has always been pretty quick on getting the glasses made.

Having a self-defense seminar is fine. There's nothing wrong with it and can actually be helpful/a good thing. But, SERIOUSLY, are they suggesting we resort to vigilanteism?

Hey...wait a minute... What if that worked?
