The land vs. building assessments aren't publicly released, are they? My downtown friend's assessment had her land as almost 4/5 of the total.

Nicky, you were not around downtown, so to say I was against anything being built is 100% wrong. As a former president of the Van Vorst Park Association, I supported development and green space. I had meetings with former Mayor Jordan. I was instrumental in getting the funds for Van Vorst Park and Hamilton, green acres. It was the first time Green Acres were used in any urban park. That took a lot of work with tons of meetings. By the way, I personally stopped the city turning Van Vorst Park into a basketball court because green acres required active sports. The trade off was vacant land on Wayne Street which has a basketball court and later became a park. Van Vorst Park also supported cut curves that are part of standard sidewalks. Someone had to the first to do that. I also started the Meet Ball, it happened to celebrated the hours we spent on the park renovations. I also got grant money to have trees place around Van Vorst and other parts of downtown. You know nothing because you were not around.

Well, what the hell happened to you?

I'm seeing a ton of downtown properties for sale on Zillow right now, whereas it seems like the market has been super tight for the last few years. Of course they're all going for more than a million, but still interesting.

Exactly. This is how RRC works. The city wants you to do the inspection work for them.

Some time back I called what is transpiring in Jersey City in as far as this real estate madness as economic violence. Now, more than ever it has revealed itself as extreme. I have looked at the assessment tables and focused on The Village area of downtown, since it was my father's neighborhood. There are elderly tenants still inhabiting many of those wood frame, attached buildings. We're talking about structure built in many cases before the twentieth century.
Valuations are in a large number of them north of three quarters of a million dollars with the attendant taxes now imposed. What in the name of decency is going on in Jersey City ? Is there no one who is going to stop this insanity? Jersey City was once a wonderful city in which to live instead of an investment vehicle or a bedroom community for NYC workers. The last remnants of those who remember that are now under a vicious attack by the forces of the real estate market.
Pity the poor and the aged. true economic violence now reigns supreme in Jersey City.

I understand the sentiment, but a lot of people have been able to sell their properties for > $1 million. They're not exactly dragging people out into the gutter.

Sort of.

The interior of LSP is an emergent woodland habitat. It has some bird nesting activity but doesn't support very much feeding activity, and doesn't support any of the tidal / marshland species that Caven Point does. Perhaps when (if) the interior restoration project is completed and is found to successfully support those species an assessment of Caven Point could be considered.

Not every square inch of land needs to be intensively utilized by humans. Undisturbed habitat is exceedingly rare in Jersey City and this area should be preserved.

Ha ha ha! What a joke. Since when has it been illegal, or impossible, to "prepay" property taxes? It has always been legal and possible to pay your property tax bill before its due date. This is just grandstanding.

They're extending it to encompass the entire year, something that not all towns do. Please make informed posts in the future.

I tried that! Showed up at 8 am on a Sunday. I was amazed to see that the caretaker was almost too drunk to stand. After a futile couple of minutes trying to communicate with him he started screaming at me about Fulop. But thanks. I hope he gets the help he needs.

This is sugar coating the situation over there quite a bit. She may be nominally in charge, but the man who is there 24/7 is someone who certainly has problems and needs help. It can feel downright dangerous in the cemetery if you visit alone and he's the only one there.
