Trulia Crime Map
#61
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I'm looking at the trulia crime map out of curiosity, and wonder about its accuracy and color coding system.

http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/Jersey_City-New_Jersey/

I see it reports lots of crimes in The Heights, where I live and feel pretty safe. And reports few crimes in B-L, where I'm moving to. However, the B of the B-L, McGinley Sq, and Greenville, are colored as less safe than the Heights, when the number of crimes is fewer, like 200 fewer crimes.

What is that about?

Cool partnership.

I went to a HS that was part of a university system and it definitely had an extremely strong college going culture, where it was assumed we were all going to college and grad school. This kind of expectation, or lack of, can make or break a kid's future.

The ability to take colleg courses for credit, while in HS, was also invaluable. It broadens the kinds of classes you can take, and is super cool to show up to college with some courses under your belt.

Best wishes to Innovation High. Did they say how students will be selected?

It sounds funny but I do agree that it is a serious issue when it disturbs people's sanity.

"Noise pollution is the disturbing or excessive noise that may harm the activity or balance of human or animal life. "

Do you think it could be included under the types of noises that can be reported to county health agencies?

That text group is impressive. How was it set up? As in, how were people recruited for this? How was the buy in process?

I live in the Heights and I love it. I find transportation to be very easy, but I live in the Northeastern section 3 blocks from buses, 4 blocks from light rail.

The intersection of Congress and Palisade is like the Center of the Transportation Universe for me. If I could have afforded a house here, I would have bought here. Manhattan friends from the UWS can easily take jitneys, the 123 or the 119 to come visit. And viceversa. I take the bus or lightrail to Hoboken PATH -by the way, I LOVE being able to use the Hoboken PATH. A lot less people in it. And we all have to go through the Hoboken station on the weekends/late nights.

I'm in the process of buying a house near the garfield light rail station and I'm sad I'll be using the Grove st Path again. I say again because I used to live in DTJC and remember envying the Hoboken PATH users so much. Their trains seemed less crowded, and for some weird reason, more frequent. Later I experienced this to be true, ha!

I will also miss the jitneys a lot, they are awesome, they take you everywhere, and there is one every 2 minutes! If only NJTransit were so reliable.

I do think that light rail stations are the real attraction when you don't know the neighborhood well enough to know if the buses are a good option. And, my husband hates all buses so he has a completely different view on this issue. He's all about the light rail.

Regarding the future of the Heights - I think it will continue to apprecciate, will get more interesting businesses and so on. There are two very active and very committed neighborhood associations that are making a big difference. And now there's a fancy coffee shop. Studies show that fancy coffee shops are basically the 'IT' factor associated with a neighborhood increase in property values, income levels, etc. Yes, it did feel ridiculous to write that sentence.

Plus, the Heights is very attractive to those coming from Hoboken since they can still walk to all the Hoboken bars/friends, or take the bus/light rail/.

All that said, I'm very excited to get know my new upcoming neighborhood and join the local associations and then come here and defend it on jclist!

Update:

We did the sweep today and they found a large metal object about 3 fet deep.

Inspector will have to come back later this week to excavate and find out what it is.

I assume it most likely is an oil tank. Although I wonder, were people in the habit of burying other kinds of large metal things in their property?

I do know there are undercover cops around Riverview Fisk Park.

One early evening on a weekday I was at the community garden, and a drunk man started harrassing me through the bars ( I closed the gate), and the undercover cop car came over, cops got out and showed the guy the badges and shooed him away.

Ok, that's what I was thinking. We'll definitely get a sweep done. Any recommendations?

If we do find an oil tank, what do people do? Negotiate with seller and ask them to remove it? I would imagine that once it is known that there is an oil tank, they would have to tell any future buyers about it, and therefore it is in their best interest to just get it removed, no?

Meaning, I love this house I don't want to lose it!

thanks!

Re: Jersey City one of worst cities for recreation

I would definitely like to see more variety at a wider range of price points and locations.

Most choices are located in the DT area, with a few others in other neighborhoods (pls tell me if I'm wrong and where to find things! )

For example, if i want to do Pilates or Yoga (besides yoga in the heights), I have to go DT or Hoboken. If I want an art/diy class, same thing.

And I wish the parks had more things going on, like Pier A in the summer in Hoboken, or Central Park on any weekend.

Jersey City one of unhappiest cities in the US?

Just can't stay away

Seeing the other thread on lack of recreation opps reminded me of this study which places Jersey City in the Top 10 Unhappiest Cities in the United States. They used survey data from a CDC study with nationally representative sampling.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/07/140722103917.htm

So, are we really so unhappy?

Other studies have shown that regional unhappiness is associated with regional economic inequality - that makes sense to me when you see NYC is in this list also.

I wonder what else is influences this - population density? social comparison? crime? availability of recreational opportunities? education levels?

It's also interesting because other studies show that happiness is actaully an individual charactericti, you are either a happy person or an unhappy person, and will be so regardless of how your life circumstances change.

Oil Tank - How do I find out if property has one?

Hello all!

I'm under contract for a property in JC. Inspector suggested we find out if there is an oil tank in the property.

Seller (who has only owned property for 6 mos, he bought it as a foreclosure and is flipping it) says that his understanding is that the property was only ever served by natural gas.

My broker says we can find out more by either doing an OPRA request and/or paying for a sweep.

I'd like to hear people's thoughts and suggestions on this issue. Is an OPRA request enough? Or should I get a sweep done regardless?

The house is definitely quite old, likely pre-1900.

Thanks!

Does anyone here live in the Western side of Bergen Lafayette?

I just saw a house I love in that area, on Carteret Ave, and would apprecciate input from someone who lives there.
My commute would involve taking the MLK light rail station during normal commuting hours (8AM, then around 6PM).

thanks!

I was wondering about this myself this weekend!

I completely agree with spending less of my salary on housing.

I wonder what they didnt take into account in that calculation on that article. What about childcare if you have kids? Retirement Savings? Emergency funds? Having money for home repairs? Travel to visit family? How about just plain life enjoyment? ha

Hello!

I?m new and wanted to chip in. I?m almost afraid to post, but here goes. A few months ago my husband I decided to leave Hoboken in order to pay less rent, be able to travel more, and save up to buy a house. I started reading threads like this one (in fact, I read this one), and let me tell you, the naysayers are doing a great disservice to these neighborhoods and to the people who are considering them for whatever reason (money, space, etc.)

From the naysaying, I was afraid that if I left Hoboken I would be living in some horrible dump in a crime ridden dirty place, and doubling my commuting time to NYC. I was wondering if our only choice was to continue letting our money go down the rent drain to avoid such a horrible fate. Omg, I feel like a fool! I lived 4 blocks from the Heights for years and had never visited. So we did, we walked over, took the elevator, and voila! What a nice, normal neighborhood! And yes, each area in the Heights is different, but it was great to see with my own eyes how quiet and normal many of its areas are. Because that?s the thing, many parts of the Heights are just normal neighborhoods. It?s true, no coffee shops or fancy lounges, but the middle class suburb I grew up didn?t have these things! Neither did my husband?s small town in upstate NY. We have access to those things in NYC, where we both work, so it?s not the end of the world. And we can walk/bike/bus/train it to Hobo.
Also, I checked crime stats and for the last 2 years The Heights has had half the crime in twice the geographical area when compared to Hoboken.
And, my commute is exactly the same! 40 minutes door to door to the W Village.
We had dinner out the other day for $20? what?! I was giddy with disbelief.
So yes, we can?t afford the lifestyle we want in Hobo, but that?s ok! We are very happy in the Heights! We are now between Europe or Asia for our next trip this year
