Not a productive experience.

You must walk in with a statement/question such as...I am having a problem with my mail delivery, who can I speak to resolve the problem ? BTW don't use the word issue use problem. Why would you get that kind of response, who did you speak with ?

Yes, know how to say the things you suggested.

Sorry if I'm repeating info someone else has supplied, but John Gomez has just written a book on historic JC--he's one of the the founders of the JC Landmarks Conservancy Board:

http://jclandmarks.org/

He is a great source of history and resources (and really nice).

No/low water in Bergen-Lafayette. I draw two conclusions:

1) someone thinks we are part of downtown;

2) no one cares about Bergen-Lafayette.

Just got off the phone with United Water--I was right; we don't exist.

It's only a good idea to you because may not live in that neighbourhood. I do, and I take the LSP exit to go home--near the Park--not DTJC.

Re: Restaurant for a meeting inJSQ?

Thank you all for your suggestions--

So, it turns out that we chose Sanai's. I was sick at home and couldn't make the meeting but I heard some things that disappointed: 1) despite my making two phone calls confirming the reservation (one a month ago and one four days ago) no one was prepared for us, 2) the food was mediocre, 3) when I called to say that someone dropped the ball and should have taken better care of this the manager said, "Are you calling to complain that they just had to wait five minutes in the bar and everything's just fine?" I said that no, I wasn't calling for that reason and she should apologize for not taking care of a party better by communicating with staff.

I can't say much more because I wasn't there, but now I wish we'd chosen Rasoi.

And to the person who said we should just stick to Downtown, the entire purpose of the group is to get all of the wards and neighborhoods in JC involved. Not all of us live in DTJC and we want to be able to support other restaurants. Rita and Joe's and Europa would have been great--definitely next time with carpooling.

I really hope they listened to us at the Morris Canal meeting last night: consistency, trust . . . At some point this neighborhood could get tired of supporting that space. I so hope they want to be here for a long time.

Thank you, but that site looks too downtowny and too advertisey. I liked the cleaner look and sort of lack of focus on downtown and Newport.

You might also consider contacting the JC Landmarks Preservation Board--they give out preservation awards every year. I doubt they'd give specific recommendations but could give you the names and info of the award winners, who could then point you to their contractors.

In case you're around lower Manhattan (you know off the PATH and getting ready to hop on the subway to go to work), there's an excellent place just east of B-way on John. Very good, fast, and reasonable.

It is true--our Pella windows were normally 1k, but the 78'' ones were 2k.

By the way, no one has any actual evidence of where he is moving, it's been a rumor since the election.

I believe the ersatz, new "brownstones" by the hospital and the Jersey Ave. light rail stop call themselves the Liberty State Park neighborhood. I won't believe that he moves here until I see him walking into Provident Bank or going to Pacific Pizza.

I'd also like to point out that Downtown isn't as integrated as some people might think. If anyone saw the Slate article yesterday, we are diverse but not integrated.

Agreed, but I believe the plan is to have enough arrests and chaos happen to drive the activity out of the city. Or to get more control of the situation and make neighborhoods feel safer.

Because incarceration in the US has been shown to be such a smashing success. See: Rockefeller, drug laws.

Restaurant for a meeting inJSQ?

Just can't stay away

Hi--I've been asked to find a quiet restaurant that's not too pricey with a liquor license to have a meeting of about ten people in Journal Square (PATH accessible and not downtown). Casa Dante seems ok but is expensive, Max's of Manila seems fine but I don't know if it has a bar and I've been told Rasoi is a little loud. Are there recommendations?

Thank you

I agree with Susan N. about Uta. She's pleasant, has energy, and has good ideas.

But there is a big difference between starting projects and generating interest and implementing and leading--with an eye to eventually being replaced. Also, someone who does that job must be appealing to various constituencies and be able to communicate in a variety of contexts. In many ways, "the arts" at this level is more about money and making "friends" than it is about being an artist oneself. Artists are vital, but not necessarily as administrators.

We've used Mark Blanchard for eight years, with four cats. He came to our apt downtown and now comes to Bergen-Lafayette. He gives pills and other meds, fluids for renal failure, brushes them, feeds canned food, disposes of litter, brings in mail and newspaper, etc.

He even came the day one of my cats was euthanized to say goodbye a couple of months ago. He is wonderful. He also has people who cat sit themselves and who help out when he's unavailable. Here's his email: catman@catsmeowservices.com

I live on Pacific Ave at Communipaw and am single. I feel fine walking around at night. It is a very nice and friendly neighborhood with families and long-term people. I walk from the light rail at night and in the early morning. We have excellent neighbors.

Oh, you asked about the commute. I go to Brooklyn every day and while I don't love taking three different trains, again, the neighborhood beats it every time.

The light rail I am not sure of since I don't take it really really late, but I've never had a problem around midnight/1 am. It runs often during rush hours, and on the way home, the Bayonne Flier stops at LSP from Exchange Place (though not to it), which is great since it bypasses a couple of stops.

I feel fine and safe going home at night, even more so early in the morning. I have a ten minute walk to the light rail, it's about seven to ten minutes to Exchange Place, and then three to WTC. Not bad. I think when I moved I added about ten or twelve net minutes from what I had before when I just got on the PATH at Grove.

Hope that helps.

Hi! I moved from downtown three years ago because I could afford a large house here for what a closet cost downtown. While I do miss the energy and access of downtown, I love the neighborliness here, the people who live here forever, access to the park, the other parts of JC that I wouldn't have known about, even Bayonne is closer now. My husband and I think it's lovely.

Hi--try Lycel Villanueva (lycel@mvstudioarch.com). She's an architect, city planner, is on the JC Landmarks Preservation Committee, won an award for the work on her own house in Bergen-Lafayette, knows everybody, and is well-liked and respected. Some day, when I can afford it, she'll redo my kitchen.
