Re: Jersey City considers turning Newark Avenue into pedestrian plaza

I hope it goes through. The revised ordinance seems sensible, with allowances for deliveries to businesses and trash pickup. As a downtown resident with a car, that intersection at Grove and Newark is a nightmare I avoid anyhow, so I think its closure will actually be a good thing.

Is it normal for people to crash or was it made worse by potholes? I saw 3 accidents where people just face planted. On grove street I went into a huge hole that knocked a screw out of my back storage support. I have a cruiser and I ride down broadway from WTC everyday on a citibike so I'm good at not falling BC of potholes. Hurt my arms and wrists terribly.

Does anyone know if the girl who was face down on grove st by Montgomery was okay? She looked like she was really hurt.

The potholes were terrible!

Several groups I rode with would announce 'hole' loudly when they came upon a sizeable pothole.

As for water, I brought two bottles for the ride and it was plenty. And there were people in Greenville giving out water.

Yeah, I got warned by others before about 80% of the potholes I encountered (and passed the warning on myself whenever I saw one). With 1300 riders you'll inevitably have a few people have mechanical issues, fall, etc. - but maybe a "code of etiquette" for riders including pothole/obstacle warnings would be good in the future.

Your loss. Less crowd for those with less arbitrary standards to contend with for table space.

(Assuming you're referring to Third and Vine).

I've been 2-3 times and they always have movies playing silently on the TVs. One time it was a black and white movie, another time some odd film with Helena Bonham Carter. The type of stuff that makes great background eye candy/creates ambiance - not a sports game for people to yell at or anything that IMO disrupts the vibe.

With 90K salary, you can easily afford a 400k home (assuming you have a 20% 80k cash down). With a 320k 30yr @ 4% fixed, you are looking at $1500 monthly payment, plus $1000 property tax/fees. That's $2500 a month net debt. Net income is $7500 - 40% income tax = $4500. Leaving you $2000 a month for discretionary spending/savings. And with 10% down + pmi, cashflow becomes tighter but still doable depends on how secure your job/income is.

Doesn't daycare alone cost that much? Even without kids, if you have a car loan, student loans , utilities and amenities like internet , commuting costs, groceries, all at around ~$200 each, that's $1000 gone right there. And that's not including dinners out or new clothes or other luxuries, OR unexpected expenses like home repairs. How far is that last $1000 really going to go in terms of savings for retirement, college fund, etc.?

I mean, I have lived off of $2000/month so I know it can be done. But it's not easy and it would be a step down in terms of quality of life for me, which is not my goal when buying property, to become land poor and stuck at home eating beans.

Nothing to add except that it seems kind of quaint when people from outside the area worry about the safety in neighborhoods of JC with some of the highest home values/median incomes/etc. in the area. I talked to someone from Montclair recently who had to reassure her parents that she would be safe going to Grove St...during the day. These outdated perceptions may be the only thing keeping rent cheaper than NYC at this point.

Yep, according to that source I should have been able to buy a house yesterday. And if I wanted to be completely cash poor I could. But between emergency savings, investments, retirement savings, travel fund savings, etc. more than half of mine and my partner's assets are tied up. And our expenses are low, we don't have childcare or car payments or much student loan debt.

That ship sailed a while ago. The Museum of the City of New York recently had an exhibit on 70s and 80s graffiti. You don't have to like it, but it's already institutionalized and legitimized as part of modern art culture. Personally, I think museums and exhibits can't really capture the spirit of the culture, but that's probably true for a lot of kinds of art.

I have been saying for a while that they should bring back the produce trucks that used to drive around cities and sell fruit and vegetables (similar to a food truck but with produce). I would love to run outside my apartment to buy stuff when a truck came by, rather than timing my shopping around the farmer's markets (I love the markets, but if I miss say the Thurs. one I am SOL till the next week or have to schlep to one further from my hood).

Sometimes a little terrorizing works. Here?s one I did?..

Jerk around the corner would parallel park in his driveway but couldn?t seem to fit his little Toyota there if you parked within 5 feet of the curb cut. He managed to get a few people ticketed & left a curt note on my car. WRONG PERSON. Solution was to drive him crazy. I took his note & had copies of it made on a color printer, perfect copies. Every time he parked in his driveway, I would go out at night & leave a note on his car. How could he explain who left the notes, he had never seen me & the notes were in his writing. Now after having left the note a couple of times I started calling the parking authority & having him ticketed. After about a month he got the permit to park in his driveway & stopped terrorizing people into believing that you couldn?t park anywhere near his driveway.

I'm confused on that one. Why would you need a permit to park in your own driveway? Unless you mean "in front of" his own driveway?

Sorry caj11, I thought it was understood that this joker was in front of his own driveway.

Ok...that is kind of brilliant. And hilarious.

No one I know hangs in Hoboken, and DTJC is not interesting enough to make someone want to stay all night to (3 am) when NYC is two stops away and you could hang till 4 am or 9 am if you did after hour parties.

Journal Square has little India, the Loew's theater, and Mana Contemporary Arts. Greenville has the Greenvillian, BeLA has 660 Studios, and the Heights just got zoned for more arts spaces so I'm sure things will pop up there too. If you think these areas are "boring" it's because you apparently aren't clued in to the cultural/nightlife options there.

I spend about 1/3 of my weekends in NYC and the rest in downtown JC. Trust me, there are plenty of people closing down bars in DTJC and then heading to after parties. There is an active circuit of sorts of basement, backyard, and garage band shows as well as regular old house parties.

Methinks you may not know about these things because someone with your...disposition is not likely to get invited in the first place. But plenty of places in NYC are happy to take your money in exchange for your idea of a "good time" so feel free to continue believing that is the only interesting night life in the area.

1. take uberX, not uber - it's cheaper and just as good
2. Surge pricing means you're going to pay anywhere from 2-4X as much. It tells you that on the screen and you have to click accept. If you do so, expect to pay a lot.

The surge pricing is the one thing Uber has been criticized most heavily for. Apparently their New YEars Eve prices were insane.

I do believe the FOLs know the theater better than anyone at this point....

Why?

Again, they haven't shown the ability to fund-raise, their programming skills are decidedly unimpressive, and they think they can sue their way into control of the theater. Nothing about their recent track record makes me say "yeah, those guys know how to make the most out of a 3000 seat theater."

This is not to detract from their efforts to save the theater in the first place. I just don't see any evidence that they are the ones to make the most of it.

I mean in terms of the restoration efforts. They literally know the place inside and out. I think their talent lies in historical preservation. They have basically worked miracles. It seems inefficient to bring in a new group to learn from scratch when there is already an experienced group who probably just need better funding/staffing/etc.

It is not reasonable for 2 full time staffers to serve as managers of a multi-million dollar restoration AND run a fully operational theater. I do think the city has held up the restoration process, not them.

But I also think it was short sighted of them to focus primarily on restoration at the detriment of their community engagement. It has led to ambiguity and even malice towards them because people don't see what they do all day and why they're getting paid to do it. Stuff like movies not being advertised until a week before. Lack of visibility has hurt them and led to the news pieces that minimize or downplay their efforts.

It's telling that they do not have a dedicated communications director, program manager, etc. (or even a team of 2-3 volunteers each fulfilling part of these roles). And that until the last few weeks, their facebook page was sporadically updated as was their website. I have very rarely seen flyers or posters for any Loews events downtown (stagefest being one exception).

Well, ask and ye shall receive! From the Loew's facebook:

"Q: ?Why doesn?t Friends of the Loew?s just respond to the Request for Proposal that the Mayor called for??

A: The RFP process is not the best way to build an arts center to serve our community and region. The most successful art centers around the country are typically founded by non-profits that grew with the venue and took careful consideration as to how the venue expanded with its community?s needs. The RFP process is how governments solicit bids for supplies and routine services, not develop a unique resource such as an arts center. It?s true that some cities that weren?t fortunate to have a non-profit in the picture tried the RFP route, often with mixed results that led to turn-over in theatre management and inconsistent programming.

For the Loew?s, the RFP process would result in a for-profit company taking control, but that is not the way to maintain and grow community arts and other varied programming. It?s also not the best way to safeguard the well-being and future of one of our most iconic landmark. Remember, it was for-profit management that led to the Loew?s decline and closing in the first place.

FOL won?t participate in a process that?s not the best for the Loew?s. And the RFP process is just not necessary for the Loew?s. FOL is in the picture and has proven both our dedication and ability. We?ve demonstrated that we can work with major promoters at the same time that we are civically minded and care about how the Loew?s serves it community and the impact it has on nurturing community relationships. We are committed to the plan to move forward with the Loew?s that is clearly outlined in our lease dating back to 2004."

OK so my next question then is, does the RFP require the bids come from for-profit organizations? The statement says the RFP "would result in a for-profit company taking control" - so why not form Friends of the Loews LLC as the for-profit arm of their organization?

I do believe the FOLs know the theater better than anyone at this point, and conceivably could then propose the most informed RFP. I stick by my original suggestion that Fulop should have hired 2-3 full time staffers to work on things like grant writing, fund raising, project management of upgrades, and programming at Loews and give them a fixed amount of time, like a year, to meet certain benchmarks. Of course this would need to be paired with the city not holding up the funding for projects as they apparently have done.

Wow, very different tone coming from FOL vs. Fulop. If you follow the FOL facebook they have basically launched a PR campaign to raise awareness of the scope of the renovations they've done (good) but also criticize the City's RFP process (maybe ill advised). I am still not clear why they didn't submit an RFP themselves or with another group - do they not have relationships with groups like Mana, NJCU, or other non-profits like Art House Productions to submit something together? They have voiced many of their objections to their portrayal in the media, etc., but I'm still not clear what about the actual process they object to.

If Jersey City wants to be a truly diverse place it cannot cater to one demographic. Unfortunately right now IMO there are too many hipster places and then the other places have trepidation about defying the stroller set. .

My problem with Powerhouse is that it won't commit to doing one thing, and doing it well. If they wanted to make it a nightclub, then fine - put in club lighting, a DJ booth, platforms for dancers, and have bottle service. I'll never go there but plenty of other people will. But don't pull this "Sports bar! Sushi bar! Brick oven pizza! Lounge! Corporate Happy Hour!" bullshit where you try to be everything to everyone. It makes me feel like they think I'm stupid - like if they have sushi they're going to get some % of the "sushi crowd" but if they also thrown in sports bar, lounge, etc. they'll get those crowds too - but in reality I don't want to sit down to eat some sushi with sports fans yelling at a TV next to me. Or with club music thumping and people fist bumping. There are a limited number of "fusions" that work, i.e. Barcade, but they have 2 elements (video games and craft beer) not five.

I have noticed one positive form of graffiti though I'd argue it's actually street art.

A building on the corner of Coles and Columbus has been abandoned for decades. It's on the list of properties the city is planning to seize. Someone tagged something lewd on there a few weeks ago. About a week ago I noticed that someone had put up what looks like a wheat paste drawing, that is a figure heavily inspired by "the thinker" but sitting on an oil drum. They completely covered the lewd graffitti.

Whoever you are who did this - thank you! If I'm going to have to stare at a dilapidated building, I'd rather it become a piece of art than a regular piece of sh*t.
