Re: Journal Square Vs. JC Heights

The Heights has many transportation options -- I'd say more than any other neighborhood -- it's just none of them are exceptional.

You can take a bus to DTJC and then to the PATH. You can bus the 119 or 123 to the PABT. You can walk the distance to the Light Rail and then take the PATH from Hoboken. There are numerous jitneys. You can walk to the JSQ PATH. I also have a folding bike and just do the commute myself, with a PATH ride under the river.

Nothing is going to beat living in DTJC by City Hall and having the Grove St PATH right outside my door. I'm spoiled for life because of that. If you're willing to get a little bit of exercise (biking, walking) and don't mind an extra 10-20 minutes in commuting in exchange for green space and nice views, than the Heights is a great option.

Everyone's eyes are different. If you have poor vision (and would want LASIK to begin with) it's because you were either born with poor vision or your vision degraded with time. Lasik will fix either scenario, but it doesn't prevent your eyes from continuing to degrade as you age.

I'm going on four years of 20/20 vision after getting surgery. Best thing I ever did.

I went to LASIK Plus in Woodbridge, NJ. Their deal was: if I made all followup appointments (which I did) I'd qualify for free surgery in the future, if needed, assuming my eyes were still candidates for the procedure. This is probably not something you'd get from a local practice....

The bikes were delivered by truck, but are mostly redistributed by a single bike rider who has a hitch and a four or six bike carrier.

Financial, yes, for a number of reasons.

Engineering? As in, the bikes? The docking stations? "Engineering failure" is a bit of a stretch.

.... and of COURSE subscription fell. The excitement of a new system and yearly access to transit cheaper than a single month's unlimited metrocard resulted in high subscription rates. Last year's terrible winter and the bicycle = exercise factor resulted in a dropoff.

Anyone who wanted to try Citibike did it in the beginning. What new wave of people can Citibike possibly tap in to the next year without actually expanding to new neighborhoods (which they did very little of)?

Expanding Citibike to NJ is a step in the right direction and will result in more subscriptions...

The only other time I saw anything remotely close to Teddy on PATH was about 2 years ago when a younger guy put his open guitar case on the ground and began strumming. He was shut down in about 30 seconds by the conductor. He was an amateur on multiple levels -- he tried to pull this off in the second car in clear view of the conductor.

Teddy is smooth because he walks and talks, and if you're watching from another car or on a camera, it's hard to see that he's saying anything at all.

As posted above, it's not a Penn Station issue, never was, and likely never will be, even if that station is a shithole. It's the two nearly-100 year old tunnels under the Palisades and Hudson River that prevent any increase in peak-time traffic.

Urban renewal of the 1940s-1960s encouraged large chunks of neighborhoods to be sectioned off for one purpose, i.e. WTC, Lincoln Center. The Shoprite complex is not a mid-century product, but its design is. (Re)introducing the street grid has been done whenever possible to these big plots of land.

Maybe we're looking at two different things, but the street grid hasn't been rearranged. Streets have been added to what is now a parking lot. Adding streets is supposed to integrate the section back in to the city ......

I don't have a perfect answer, but around this time of year, it would be great to have a list of places close by where one can volunteer, rather than have the individual seek those options out.

Do you have anything in writing that states what appliances can and can't be used under this arrangement? If not, your tenant found a cheap way (at your expense) to heat their unit.

I really hope the first thing that goes (in addition to the six-figure upper management) is the policy of CHECK OR MONEY ORDER ONLY to buy a godddamn $15 parking sticker.

Question -- how will dissolving the parking authority result in 24hr enforcement, as the video hinted at? Patrol officers can write tickets now (but rarely do) so if we're relying on patrol officers 100%, wouldn't that be a decrease in the amount of ticket writing? Am I missing something?

Also, the PA's 50,000 number does not reflect the uneven distribution of ridership. How much of this 50,000 number will have a tangible benefit on the most crowded trains at the busiest times of the day?

How do you suppose they add capacity into NYC without also increasing the amount of empty trains out of NYC? Where do you expect those extra capacity trains to go once they reach NYC?

If you increase the frequency of trains inbound, the outbound trains must increase in proportion.

Use your head.

Much of the water that came in and flooded the heart of DTJC (near city hall) came not from the Hudson River-side (east) but from the south, through the marina.

How does one fill in land, build a wall, and still have a marina?

It's so hot down there in DTJC, you could even say it's on fire. The next rain storm will flood the place and cool it all back down to normal soon.

Yes. CC Blvd / Railroad Ave is one of the few streets downtown wide enough to accommodate head-in parking. Very northern & western Hobokenish. The road has since been changed to two lanes in either direction.

Don't bother with sightings that low on the horizon. You likely won't be able to distinguish the ISS over a distant airliner coming in to Newark.

This past weekend, we had two good sightings over New York City, ranging between 60-65 degrees.
