i used to see the silver fox on his police bike in VVP often a few months ago...almost always on his cell phone, but at least he was there. haven't seen him in a while though.

yes!

i used to have one of those police boxes on my corner when i lived in NYC next door to the cuban consulate. 24 hour police presence. never felt safer in my life. even more when fidel came to town for UN meetings.

This case: 12 year old girl lured off the street by neighbor perv who put her in handcuffs.

Hofstra: college aged woman who willingly engaged with a group of guys and needed to come up with an excuse so her new boyfriend wouldn't think she was slutty.

So, NO.

i don't know if it's my route or my timing but i don't think i have heard these beyond a couple of times over a bunch of years.

what could drive me mental are the backpacks. unless you are paying a double fare, please remove your dorky backpack from your back and make room for others. you are a space hog.

oh wait, deep breaths, deep breaths.

Not for nothing but if those recordings are really about to make you "go postal" then I think you need to find an alternate way to work. Or invest in some nice noise-reducing headsets or listen to music or something. Deep breaths.

I'm not sure what you were expecting them to tell you, but for company, be sure to visit PATHSUX.com.

thanks althea! you are closer to this than most so i appreciate your perspective. i remain a fulop fan but i will continue to ask questions -- just probably not on this site.

as for the local gov't 101, i understand how it works, but thanks to many of you who wanted to clarify it. i gets it.

then why bother? if we have such low expectations, how can we expect any improvement ever? why even have a council at all?

i find it incredibly hard to believe that there is nothing that a councilperson can do to rally attention around areas that need improvement and fight for action among the powers-that-be. i don't think anyone is expecting fulop to single handedly oversee significant change. i would, however, like to see a committed and continued effort to improving life in the ward. i am a fulop fan, by the way, and i don't think my own expectations are so out of line.

if not, then, well, anyone can do that job. so who cares. how sad.

My hand is down. There's no way he can do it.

He's young, though. If he's serious, he needs to be patient. He's got a base in downtown. Somehow he has to effect some positive changes in this area (decrease crime, clean the place up, fix the place up, improve schools, improve organization of schools, improve business climate, implement some rational growth strategies, etc.) while expanding his influence in other parts of Jersey City.

This is not a small task. Near impossible, really, without a machine behind you. Someone has to try, right?

regarding effecting some positive change in his ward -- yes yes yes. that's exactly what i was trying to say a couple days ago. you just said it way better.

would love to see him make it happen!!!

AMY: About the cans... have you tried contacting the incinerator authority yourself to complain about the lack of garbage cans?

ME: No, because my neighborhood has cans and i have to pick my battles.

AMY: Have you called the cops to complain about crack dealing in the park?

ME: Several times, for conditions around that park and downtown in general. My favorite time was when the dispatcher scolded at me for calling when I saw a gang of kids repeatedly pushing a nerdy kid INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC on Montgomery.

AMY:When you see something call the cops and if you don't see results then contact Dina O'Reilly and ask her how we can get the problem solved, who to talk to, what to do, etc.

ME: Nope because up until like 3 hours ago I trusted the system. Yah, i know. But this news of Fulop having his eye on a bigger prize suddenly struck me as something to react to. I should have seen it coming, I guess I did, but the reality of it just hit me. Here's hoping he doesn't abandon the job he has now while he still has it.

AMY: Healy isn't exactly a fan of Steve, so I wouldn't be surprised if he deliberately undermines any progress in Ward E just make Steve look bad and screw us over. Just sayin?

ME: In the words of my girl Tyra, "Is that what you think? You said it"!

As for downtown dealing with it's own issues... if he gets elected there will be a lot of shake up in city hall and chance for new "clean" candidates to fill open positions. I've been in Jersey City for 13 years now and I know it can be really discouraging to deal with the city sometimes. When Steve showed I up I became more inspired and hopeful for our future. He's the only person I know that follows up with personal emails. Have you ever received a personal email from Healy or any of his people? So let's can the smack talk and try to focus on what we can all do to help clean up our own streets and help our government help us.

Assuming you were responding to me:

1. I wasn't talking smack, so relax.

2. I don't disagree with you overall but i don't think that just riding on the hope and dream of change is enough. I'd like to continue to see progress made in Fulop's current ward. That's just me, but I do have a vote. And I want to be able to vote for someone I believe in, not just a less-sucky-option than the current administration.

3. I don't think the literal and figurative "cleaning up" are mutually exclusive.

4. I still think it's woefully ironic that there was a shooting just 4 blocks away from Fulop's fundraiser.

5. Stop settling for so little.

I don't disagree. But change begins at home, as they say.

I'd like to see attention paid to the crack park on Wayne and the lack of garbage cans throughout the ward, just as two very topical examples.

While there's a shoot out on Wayne Street, just blocks away.

Such lovely irony.

I am a Fulop supporter but we've got a long way to go cleaning up even the most obvious issues in our own ward before Team Fulop starts tackling the bigger city issues.

Do we know that the dog was off-leash or did the owner just lose control?

Dying to know more about this -- why on earth would the dog just lunge and bite? I know you don't know, Parkman, but I am very curious.

At this time of day the park is a toddler booby trap (I mean that in the nicest way possible) so this could have been even scarier.

Then i highly recommend you reevaluate your methodology so you can make a credible point. You seem to be putting a lot of time and effort into this so it's worth doing it on the up-and-up.

But as I mentioned before, even though it's not a legitimate survey, it just might get some attention, so good luck with it!

The pool certainly felt Boca Raton-like, with people getting up at the crack of dawn to claim lounge chairs (nightmare) and single dads entertaining their kids in the pool all weekend.

this assumes that no one before this driver parked funny on this block, like too far from the corner, setting off the whole line-up. or perhaps there was a motorcycle parked there -- better yet, a vespa! -- or maybe even a teensy smart cart, which also would throw off the line-up.

in other words, don't assume that this guy is a d-bag just because you resent the car he drives. or she. d-bagette.

Reading this thread shows the ignorance of so many...

First off, JCorNYC is full of BS. To go to LSP, you do not need to go through bad neighborhoods, or even approach them. You take the HBLR and get off at the LSP light rail station, which is the one after Jersey Ave (if heading South) and before all the other ones referenced by JCorNYC.

As for Wibbit, JennyMayla and GreenevilleChick, you are all taking extreme sides of the same topic. I live in The Foundry, which is very near where the shooting took place, and across the street from the LSP area. The area that sorrounds The Foundry definitely looks sketchy (at best) but it is rather safe most of the times. We could argue ad nauseum why it is "ghetto" but the fact remains that most people would find the area, at face-value, to be "undesireable". Still, I like the area and feel safer here that I would living in many other parts of JC, including the Ocean Ave mess, as well as many/most parts of the Heights. I bike in the area often and do not fear for my life, and my hot beautiful wife (who, if it matters, appears whitey, but is actually Mexican) walks in the area and visits the bodegas and corner stores, and we never feel threatened or at risk. The worst aspect of this area, besides the litter, chicken bones and dog poop, has got to be the constant noise late at night of trucks and cars, as well as the ocassional low-life arguing with a boyfriend/girlfriend.

for the record, and since it will shame wibbit to be grouped with me, i don't think my reaction was so extreme. is it a sketchy neighborhood? maybe. but i don't think it's life threatening and i don't think there are gangbangers on the corner 24/7/365. that was my point.

oh wait, maybe you meant what i said about ocean ave. in which case, i stand by it. 100% scary and near daily police activity to prove it. so call me an extremist then. i can live with that.

Agreed. Not sure what the point of the survey is, since it's got no real validity beyond it's clever little name. A proper unbiased poll could potential yield some action, or at least some local press. Although the Jersey Journal will cover anything, so who knows...
