Agreed. The FBI's wanton rousting of law-abiding citizens has gone on far too long. #DontRoustMeBro

Really? Have you witnessed lots of wanton rousting by FBI goons? Are they really roaming the streets accosting innocent citizens? This is the kind of loose conspiracy talk that makes the internet so fun.

The word "luxury" gets thrown around very easily here. The palace at Versailles is luxury. Bloomberg's townhouse is luxury. Throwing some neon lights on a building and having a few treadmills doesn't denote "luxury". Set your sights a little higher, my young Masters of the Universe.

Another vote for Pecoraro's. Delicious breads, friendly, old-school service (and I have a crush on the lady who works behind the counter).

Re: Bike Share System

Yeah, the NY system was probably too ambitious because of its huge scale. Smaller bike-share programs work very nicely in lots of places (in Minneapolis, it shuts down in winter and it's still a success!). Those are probably better comparisons than NYC. I agree with you, why would a tourist rent one of those clunky bikes when they can get a real one for the same price? But that's obviously not an issue in Hudson County.

Re: Bike Share System

I'm not sure that makes sense. The number of rides in NY exceeded anyone's hopes, but one of the problems is that the utilization is much more heavily weighted toward annual members than they expected - they're not getting enough revenue from one-time users. There's high demand, just a different demand than they thought and now they need to adjust accordingly.

A roofer is a good idea, but I'd suggest getting references from friends or neighbors. A roofer has a vested interest (have you ever taken a car to a mechanic who found nothing that needed fixing?). You need someone who will give you straight answers

Maybe it's all about perspective. My apartment overlooks the Hyatt, Grundy park and NYC. I had a friend visting and after admiring the view (which distracted her from my shabby furniture), she added "and you get to watch the helicopters flying by, that's so cool!".

Silverstein has been brilliant in his handling of this whole thing. He's used public money to build two huge buildings - 7 WTC is his, too - while putting up very little of his own. And now he's got a 1/3-finished building to use as leverage; it's not like the PA is going to let him walk away and leave it to rust.

It's crazy for the PA to give more loan guarantees, but that is one smart guy.

There are a lot of technically-astute people on this thread, so this is going to be an elementary question. I have an external (indoor) antenna, and it works great on some OTA channels, not at all on others. Any suggestions? I can't put anything outside my apartment.

Yes, because it's a law that everyone must love being around a bunch of drunks screaming at millionaires playing a game on TV.

But why would I be doing MYSELF a favor? Wouldn't I be doing THEM a favor, since they're the ones who don't want me around? You seem confused, Nori.

Maybe you never saw JC in the 80s? If you had, you'd know why it made sense. That area was a post-industrial wasteland, and Newport seemed like a crazy idea. Walling it off from the rest of the its surroundings didn't seem strange at all.

Since I don't drink and don't watch sports, I'm really out of the loop on this. What do 25-TV places do to attract business on non-sports nights? Or is some sport on every night nowadays?

Also...that place is big, but not that big. The idea of 25 TVs in that space makes me shudder-y.

Whattttttt??? You racist, classist yuppie! Why don't you and all your Starbucks-loving friends move to Westfield?!

Okay, I'm done.

We had this same problem at my previous address. It was a condo building, so EVERYBODY had an opinion. There was even a faction that wanted to provide the gentleman a cot to make his stay more comfortable. Whatever this man's issues may be, you can't reason with him. Move the doorbells, lock the door, move on. If it makes you feel better, make a big donation to a charity that serves the homeless. Your tenants are paying good money to live in a safe/clean environment.

Is that place ever filled? It always seems 2/3 empty whenever I go by. Granted, I'm seeing it on my way to/from Shoprite, so maybe the party crowd keeps different hours than boring old me.

Re: Concealed carry coming to NJ?

Guns, guns, guns. I get the civil libertarian side of the argument, I just cringe when people start using phrases like "real Americans" and describing situations in which they'll draw down on a pack of marauding drug-crazed perps. I'm in my 50s and spent the first two-thirds of my life in very sketchy places doing fairly sketchy things (coke-buying on the LES, circa 1979, anyone?). Not once have I felt the need for a gun. The whole "I need to carry a gun" thing feels like carrying around a fire extinguisher in case you see a burning building. Or wishful hoping that you'll get a chance to shoot one of those drug-crazed perps.

I think I'll go with the odds and remain gun-less.

I'm no Christie supporter, but this story isn't exactly dirty stuff - in fact, it's not even a story. Todd Christie partnered with some Harrison guys to buy some houses. It's not like they needed inside info to know that neighborhood is going to appreciate; the new Harrison station and the surrounding development have been public knowledge for years. I can remember talking about buying property there 5 years ago, but deciding that the timeline for redevelopment was too hazy. Probably a dumb call.

Just curious why you hated Newport with such a passion. It's clean, has reasonable access to amenities, great views and commute to NY. I could see not liking it - it's not really my taste either - but HATING it and looking to move after a month?

I fostered a pitbull for 6 months. She was the sweetest dog I'd ever met and super-trainable. But I'll admit that I had some concerns when I walked her - if something had set her off, there's no way I'd have been able to control her; she was as strong as an ox. I never saw a whiff of aggressive behavior from her, but I do understand peoples' fears.
