Although the reccomendation may be true, that shite is not used in the west 72nd street run, nor is it used in the Thompson Sq. Park run. Both are soil and woodchips, sucka.
Now you?re calling me a liar? I physically went to the 72nd. St. run during our research period and have the picture to prove this is the identical surface used there. We ordered from the same supplier and received the same material. They used neither soil nor wood chips, what they didn?t do was make the surface deep enough and the landscape material below is being dug up by the dogs. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
ok PM, i'll give you this one. i havent been to that run since late 2005, and it was dirt and hay (yes, hay) back then. i guess the trump plaza residents on the west side highway complained. but pictures can be altered and since i work up that way, i'll take a peek myself and report back. so - where's the picture of tompkins sq. dog run. i BET that's still woodchips. either way - the surface still sux. but i'm enjoying bringing my dog there. so you aint all that bad for an old fool.
Is this capitulation on your part? ?What a night..mare!?

Actually, I asked United Water if they had two non-working hydrants they would be willing to donate, should hear back from them this week.

The one in the picture is functional.

and hats off to the wonderful dog run, which seems to be bringing much business (now and in the future to area vets). My next door nieghbor, a nice woman with a really sweet dog, was so excited to have soemwhere to take her dog off leash. she is too old to chase it otherwise and refused to let it loose inthe park before. the dog has gotten a horrible eye infection and the vet - not sure which one, says that the dusts and debris, probably attributable to the new surface, is the cause.

i still don't know why, with so many nieghboring dog runs to use as examples, parkman chose this surface. there are surfaces in NY that are plain dirt, wood chips, concrete, small gravel..... none of those cause me to have to wipe the dog down before going bank into the hoouse, scrap a pair of work shoes cause they are filthy, or take the dog to the vet and incurr unforeseen medical expenses (not me yet, but rue the day).

the dogs love it. but the dogs would have loved to run on other, btetter surfaces. parkman, sho sold you on this flawed product? it sucks.
The surface in the VVP run is the same product being recommended by the Parks Dept. of NY, 2 large dog organizations in Manhattan, and is presently in the 72nd st. and Thomson Sq. parks.

As I have stated from the first day the run was opened, this surface will throw off a fine dust until we get a good rain. There are two signs on the entrance gate telling dog owners of the same.

That said, the last thing I want to happen, is for dogs to have an adverse reaction to this dust. Since we have no water source in the park during the winter and we have had no rain since the run was opened, tomorrow I will ask Public Works to tap into the fire hydrant and saturate the area to wash away this dust. If they cannot get to it tomorrow, I will close the run until they do. As we have observed, when this surface gets wet it firms up and what remains is a soft stone layer.

I hope your neighbor?s dog is better and this is not a cause and effect incident.
We will do what we can to minimize this as a possibility.

Re: Van Vorst Park---You're on notice!

The signs outside the run explain that the run is not complete yet.

When the dividing fence between the large and small run are in place, then I?ll start to hear how small each area is, not that the run is too big for the park.

We have three benches, two waste stations, and landscaping around the perimeter fence yet to be installed.

The two picnic tables that were once dominated by dog owners will be placed in areas, by early spring, that are more conducive to conversation and picnicking.

As far as the overall size, the community was given the choice to have either no run at all, a large run, or a smaller sized area; the overwhelming vote (85%) choose the larger size and that is what the plans were drawn up against.

And NOW you complain.

We?re not going to make everyone happy but I think in the end, this will be a great addition if people get involved in its care and maintenance and respect the rest of the park.

Well played, Councilman. Well played. You'll fit in here juuuuust fine.
Most of the time I agree with your assessments and point of view, however you tend to perceive well-meaning individuals as ?hero/martyrs? and imply that their motivations come from other than just doing what they feel is right; one can actually be motivated by other internal drives. You don?t always have to take on the mantle of cynic; some times a cigar is just a cigar.

Ward E

The public meeting for comment on T&M?s proposals for the downtown parks and open spaces, including Hamilton and Van Vorst Parks, is on Tuesday January 23, 2007 @ City Hall, 6pm.-9pm.

Please visit this site to see what is being proposed for your parks / green spaces and if you have comments, objections, or questions; the above date is the time to express them.
http://www.cityofjerseycity.com/arch/
.

If you pass up this opportunity, you will be accepting T&M?s design and will not be able to effect any changes once implemented.

Hamilton Park is the largest of the downtown parks to be discussed and will have its first renovation since the 1970?s. A small fraction of downtown residents have been heard from to give input into what is being presented as a community consensus. As for my opinion, there are not enough decorative gardens, passive areas, and though T&M proposes reseeding the lawns, they do not provide for a supplemental sprinkler system to keep the lawns alive. You also have the issues of tennis courts, a dog run, and children?s play areas.

Please be proactive and participate in this decision making process for your park system.

Re: Whitlock Cordage Interrupted?

My understanding is that the developer in is the process of trying to settle with the bonding company that insured the project. With a resolution, they will be able to complete the construction.
The monies were provided by private and federal funds, I don?t know what ramifications there are with the current lawsuit.
I did hear that a number of individual actions are being taken by some of the lessees.
I?m just hoping that they will be able resolve these issues soon, for their project would definitely be a stabilizing agent for the neighborhood.
I?ll let you know if I get any updates.

Re: Whitlock Cordage Interrupted?

Seven months ago the developer and their contractor reached an impasse. The developer claimed that the contractor was behind schedule and the contractor said the developer had run out of funds and was not paying his crew.
They are now in litigation with no date set as to a resolution. $45,000,000 worth of construction sits silent after 200 leases had been signed. Many of the buildings are exposed to the elements and have started to deteriorate, if this project sits for the winter, who knows what will happen to it.
As to the cobblestone street, Whitlock did not remover the stone, that was done by the contractor on the opposite side of Manning Ave, I was told they will start reinstalling the original stone next week.

I can tell you for a fact, that the owner of the hardware store has been trying to find a developer to buy his property for a number of years. Parkman, I'm appreciative of the work you've done for the dog run. I feel like I missed something though (maybe since I was on vacation for a while). Last I heard the dog run construction was going to begin in August (as per the sign in the park), and then early Fall. Now it's not going to start at all? Why was the public told that contstruction would begin if plans weren't final?

How much money is needed to make this happen? Has there been any sort of drive to pull the money together? I know there are a ton of dog owners in the neighborhood, myself included, who would be happy to chip in some cash to make this a reality.

Welcome back from vacation.
Please see the thread; ?VVP Dog Run Begins, now it?s up to the community?.
The dates given were in good faith. The delay was a result of last minute City politics, which have since been resolved. The initial construction has started, with the removal of a number of trees. If all goes as planned, excavation will begin next Tuesday.
Again, please see the above thread to donate.
Thank you.

Re: Ode to Parkman

Home away from home

A pleasant surprise to come home tonight and see this.
I don?t know what prompted this thread but I?m very appreciative of your support and acknowledgment of what I?m trying to accomplish in VVP. I truly believe that our park can make a difference in our quality of life and that it reflects well on us as a community.

I?ve taken this process far as I can, trying to provide a dog run for the VVP under financial constraints, administration resistance, and in general, a derisive atmosphere. It?s now up to the dog owners of downtown to decide whether or not they understand that their financial input is necessary to complete this process or adhere to the concept that the City should take care of everything for them.
This dog run is an addition to a park that has already received 1.6 million dollars in funds and never was designed to have a dog run in it. The new bonding for parks by the City is designated toward many parks that have not been addressed for decades and many are in the poorest sections. This is the most affluent part of town and yet the biggest objection I hear, is that the dog owners feel the City should be taking care of the entire cost. I wish that this were the case so I wouldn?t have to put myself out there trying to explain every nuance of a four-year process.
Sorry, but to paraphrase, it?s either ?run, or no run?; it?s now up to and for you.

Re: Goodbye to Cobbled Manning Avenue?

Home away from home

A private contractor is in the process of adding new water lines from Communipaw to the new houses on the east side of Manning. My property runs along most of Manning and we have been keeping an eye on what is being done. I was told by the contractor and the City that the cobblestones are being stored and will be replaced upon completion of the work. I will be following up on this. I think this one of only six cobblestone streets remaining in Jersey City, it would be a shame if it were to be left damaged.

I can highly recommend Rackley Custom Upholstery @511 Communipaw ave. 201 451-0897. Not the greatest of neighborhoods but his work is of high quality with reasonable prices. I?ve used him a number of times to re-cover some antique chairs and a settee.

I recommend J&N Carpet Cleaning @ 201 432-2168. They have a truck with a built in vacuuming system with a 75 ft. hose. I've used them for about 10 years and their prices have been reasonable. Ask for Nick. Good luck.
