Re: Atomic Wings owners suing JC over delays in opening
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have had second hand experience with the pay-off's with this building department. Although there were arrests in the past I've heard this is a four year cycle where they just start doing it again - don't fool yourself this isn't still going on. I'm sure we all have stories about how slow, ill timed and contradictory this department is (including the fire inspections) for homeowners, builders and businesses.

I don't understand why the media isn't interested in a full scale investigative story of this department? I know a friend of mine was contacted by a private building inspector they used who was contacted by the FBI conducting an investigation on this department. That is how some of the arrests occurred the first time. There are still too, too many stories of corruption, lengthy delays and contradictions to trust anyone there.

Re: Woman Robbed at Knifepoint on Mercer St.

Maybe this can help. I don't know if I bought mace or pepper spray - whatever is legal in the state of NJ, I bought. But it's worth being familiar with how to use it.

Effective Use of Pepper Spray

What is the most effective use of my pepper spray? One of the keys to effective use of pepper spray is timing and recognizing a potential threat and knowing when it becomes an assault! Exactly when you bring a pepper spray to bear on an assailant can be critical to the outcome of a situation. First you have to make sure the pepper spray is readily available and, second, through practice you can bring it to bear on the assailant quickly and accurately.

Timing Your Pepper Spray is So Important

Is timing important when using pepper spray? There?s much more to using pepper spray than point and shoot! Remember, don?t raise, point, and shoot the spray until you?re ready to fire. Wait until the assailant is in range and you know the spray will hit him full in the face area and incapacitate him! The objective is to surprise him or her before they can have a chance to react or think.

How to Spray Your Pepper Canister

Exactly how do I spray my pepper spray? If you have to use your pepper spray make sure you have distance between you and the threat if at all possible. Aim the spray at the eyes and facial region of the threat then release a 1 to 2 second burst of spray. After you have done this MOVE out of the way but keep your eyes on the threat. Pepper spray ingredients can take a couple of moments to cause a reaction and by watching the reactions of the threat you will be able to determine if you will require another shot of pepper spray.

I bought pepper spray for my wife. It was at the local pistol range. If someone is pointing a knife at her I want her just to give up her purse, but she insists she'd give the purse, pepper spray (for safety if they were to do anything else to her) and run like hell - thoughts on the best way? (I also hate to think we have muggers taking notes on this site, lol).

In my circle of friends alone living in my four block radius (Jersey Ave/Newark) I've had 1 mugging, 1 car break in, 1 apartment break in, 2 personal theft (from potted plants outside to garbage cans). All within the last 6 weeks. To have everyone I know be touched by crime in such a short period of time is no coincidence. This city is getting more and more dangerous.

Once again - what are the proactive things we citizens can do?

Re: Missing package - what to do now?

I heard birthday cards are stolen because they look like birthday cards (colorful envelopes) and could always have some $$ in them as a gift etc.

I worry because we don't have an automatic locking door (if you saw our small condo entrance, it's not built for that capability). USPS said it's not a problem as the carriers are supposed lock the door and know they are supposed to. They often don't. Why wouldn't we suspect they leave it open for their "friends" to pay us a visit later? It gets the wheels turning when we've been robbed recently.

Our building has had consistent problems with USPS postal carriers. It's distressing as they have put our safety at risk leaving the front door keys IN the front door (forgetting to put back in their lock box). We were recently robbed and for them to jeopardize our safety when their main job is to a) open door with key, b) put mail in box, c) close door with key. What am I missing here?

They once delivered our season sport tickets (valued at over $800) to the wrong address. They were popular tickets and we are impressed someone returned them to us. Are these carriers bonded? We've had at least five situations with carriers in the past six months. There's only so many times we can phone to complain. I don't want to complain, I want a solution. But please let's start writing in - power in numbers.

But keep our streets clean cause you guys will be the first to complain when your "nanny" says your kid slipped on it on the sidewalk and now you have to wipe her shoes off.....

Oh dear - get a life and clean up after the damn dog !!!!!!
Or better yet - get rid of the damn dog !!!!!

You know who you are and I know who you are !!!!

Yuppies? Really? It's the hood rats and thugs I see walking pitbulls that don't pick up after their dogs.

It's a giggle when the term Yuppie is used on this site. Such a generalization from just seeing someone walking the street. It feels like high school all over again. Where are the headbangers? The goths? The Jets and the Sharks?

Re: Whistling Crossing Guards

I know this crossing guard's antics well. I drive by there in the morning rush hour and she has dangerously worked traffic on several occassions when it's been unnecessary (no pedestrians). She's batshit crazy. She created a traffic jam with her misguided hand gestures and ill advice directing traffic and all the vehicles were not only confused but obviously one vehicle refused to go for the same reasons I do - she isn't really seeing what else is going on. The car refused to turn left on a red light because it's illegal and she wasn't watching the oncoming traffic so if he had hit something, whose fault would it have been? It was CRAZY to watch this go down! - she furiously blew her whistle but he refused to go and this held up about four lights worth of traffic. Someone should report her.

I don't understand why color in a description isn't just that. If I was missing I'd sure like someone to put in the description I'm light brown. If I mugged a person, I'd LOVE them NOT to put in my color. Phew!

I need a trusted, excellent tailor to alter a gown and tuxedo. I tried the number for http://decarlosbespoke.com/ who I heard was very good but their number is out of order and voice mail says they don't have access, I worry that's not a great sign.

Any Suggestions?

Yea, a place for all of the residents and visitors to bike, converse, walk and be elevated from the traffic is just so darn horrible and embarrasing. What a joke. Please, for the love of God, Judge Gallipoli can you please send Donato and Hyman packing.

Should we not be concerned Judge Gallipoli is on Hyman's payroll? Rumors are always swirling about Hyman and his past antics, why wouldn't he continue with his rumored corruption? I don't necessarily hear things from what I'd call "solid sources" but individuals who know of Hyman's reputation and how he's made his money in the past and this Judge, and what I have heard, worry me we are in a situation where they aren't motivated by legitimate means.

This is my wife's and my new favorite place. Fresh food, authentic, well presented, good price point. We're addicted.

When we were there so many people came and went with take out and milkshakes we had no idea it was that popular. Best kept secret no more.

Furious about getting a certified letter Tuesday that I missed because I work like the rest of the population. I sign the certification notice to accept it being mailed, post man picks it up on Wednesday and I suppose I get the letter today. All owners in my area had the same issue. We all don't know what it is, but it makes sense it's telling us about LAST NIGHTS meeting. I call Bull Shiz! Now he's made me angry.

Anyone know what happened to the meeting I was never informed about thanks to their well timed certified letter I still haven't received?

Who is this dude paying off? The judge? Who is on the take here?

We were frauded too. But it was CHASE credit cards being used for gas in Texas, cigar shops in Spain. I know three other people who were frauded by CHASE with costs in Europe recently on their credit card (not ATM card).

Why is it that a double parked car gets more police attention than a drug deal happening out in the open? Why is it that when my house was robbed it took the cops 47 minutes to arrive? Why is it that a park like the one on Wayne Street can be an open air drug market, with no action taken by the JCPD? Why is it that you cant feel safe walking down our streets at 3 in the afternoon?

It is not because we dont attend the captains meeting, we do. It is not because the tax dollars are sufficient - we are in one of the highest tax brackets on the eastern seaboard.

It is a CULTURE OF CORRUPTION - despite our efforts the spine of that corruption has not been broken. In no other city in the united states have 42 public officials been simultaneously charged. We have an overwhelmed police force, self serving - pocket lining politicos - insufficient services for our youth and the list goes on.

We need an organized effort to TAKE OUR CITY BACK. We need to step up - step out and show up in much larger numbers than we previously have.

I'm dismayed my fight is gone. Genuinely thought I could step up to it. But there are so many levels of corruption and crime here and they present themselves as elected city officials, city workers, realtors, builders, bank tellers (if CHASE is frauded like they speculate) to gang shootings, muggings, break and enters, car theft, to litter. Like Spinal Tap - our volume for fraud, grifters and crime is 11 in Jersey City. My family has been hit by every kind on that list. Just when we think we're acutely aware of how things "go down" in this city we're rudely awakened by another way fraud or crime can work here.

They've won. I'd rather move my kid, my dog and my wife go somewhere where I pay the same exorbitant property taxes and I feel like it GOES somewhere other than to support fraud and crime and the people who know how to manipulate this fractured system to their advantage. Trust me, they find each other and start traveling in packs here. I'm gone.

Resident Break & Enter 5th Street, Between Jersey & Coles on August 3

Home away from home

August 3. Break & Enter at Fifth Street residence between Jersey and Coles between the hours of noon and 5pm. Closer to 5 pm as it appears the robbery may have been interrupted.

Someone noted suspicious looking woman smoking outside watching unit and two lanky hispanic men, shaved heads, white tank tops and jeans (they thought they were movers) all across the street from the unit.

Know no further information at this time but will post when known.

Re: PATH (pathetic attempt at transporting humans)

Home away from home

Go to GROVE PATH yesterday afternoon. Escalator broken going up, opposite escalator used for going down is going up. Have to go down stairs. PATH employee blocking it with mop bucket and him mopping. Say excuse me twice and the dude doesn't move. Not an inch. Have to shimmy past and step over bucket.

Walk down stairs to PATH, three PATH employees sitting on stairs blocking people from walking down, swearing "F*ck this, F*ck that" about something they're evidently all pissed off about. Dude is about 300 lbs of fatness and blocking the entire stair, I have to shimmy past him. They don't budge.

WTC train sits there for about 8 minutes not moving.

Me loves my PATH train. So delightful.
