I love the irony - 20-30 years ago, the rich lived in low-rise houses, and the poor lived in ugly towers. Now, the 'rich' of jersey city live in ugly hi-rises, and the poor have houses with roofs and lawns and trees.

Yet the "rich" people in these cages don't act like animals as you describe.

Perhaps you could attend the next Hamilton Park meeting and see if , as a group, you can come up with some suggestions to give to our council.

Also, you could question why the JCPD allocate multiple cars to the BJ's parking lot to monitor a closed off one way street. You would think that these resources could be better utilized monitoring troubled streets. Not only would this bring in revenue, it would also send a message that the heaviest used streets are being watched.

Anyone besides me getting tired of seeing the big concrete borders at the Pershing office building on Columbus/Marin/Grove?

They should spend the money and get some permanent bollards.

How many employees (before the cut) does the JCHA employ?
I was a bit surprised by the number of people, 50, but what % is this?

Also, they oversee 2600 homes in JC? What is an adequate house-employee ratio?

It would be nice to see some other cuts in government across the board and not just this division. If a company is loosing money it must cut costs, see Ford.

To get change, someone needs to bring attention to the public just how important this issue is. It is apparent just by some comments on this board that not everyone knows exactly what this ordinance would mean.

Then, when the next election comes up we bring up this issue again and slam the incumbent.

Two items are being mixed up here

1) Pay-to-Play. There should be no hoopla, the ordinance is to limit developers to contribute to a politician under some circumstances (not all) for a year.

2) PILOTs / abatement. This issue is not even in question tonight and doesn't have much to do with pay-to-play.

abatements /= pay to play, however a developer could give money to a politician in return for a vote for an abatement.

This is the way I see it, correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Developer Pay-to-Play Press Release- Steven Fulop
Home away from home
Home away from home

Looks like the two main arguments apposing here are:

a) Since JC gave control to the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency there could be a lawsuit against the city if the ordinance passes.

This seems a little ridiculous to me however it would have been nice if they had exact stats on which cities have a similar agency with the pay-to-play ordinance and do real risk analysis regarding a potential lawsuit.

b) Since Fulop doesn't receive as much political contribution from developers as the other council members they think it is unfair to them to enact this specific law which would give Fulop a unfair advantage regarding raising funds.

While I agree that this is important legislation, this idea will be relevant as it could possibly relate to motive. The publics best interest is not always the reason.

How does ending dual office holding mean the demise of local control?

This issue is important enough to stand without adding it to the Hudson Co reform mentioned.

Steve can you give your public view on the two separate issues (dual office & tax changes/state oversight)?

development is good, corrupt politicians are not.

There is nothing illegal about putting up an "ugly" building, otherwise all the vacant buildings and vinyl siding would be gone.

Re: Clothing Drop Box

The boxes at shoprite are not from a non-profit ORG. They are from American Recycling Technologies and they will get paid for whatever you drop off.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today sued American Recycling Technologies, Inc. of East Northport, New York for labeling its clothing drop boxes in a manner that falsely leads donors to believe they are making a charitable donation. In reality, American Recycling receives and sells for a profit all the clothing left at its bins, while paying a small yearly stipend to charities listed on the boxes.

To me, at least, it seems clear that Sonia wants to run for Ward E council. Becoming enemies with Fulop and splitting the voter base would be her best way to do this.

I really don't think she cares about the Korean vets any more than Fulop does, her actions are purely politically based.

How much of this is janitors working very hard and getting overtime and how much is just cooking books to get more cash?

The article makes it sound like Keating gets 50k/year salary and *in addition* to this he made 163k in overtime over two years which averages to $131,500/year. This sounds excessive to me.

It passed. Apparently the head of the committee was arguing against it, but would have accepted a 7 story building, but it was a case of "me too" because a 12 story is going up directly across the street on Newark Ave? I don't know the details.

The building looked amazing, but they always do in pictures. I don't have much of an opinion either way except that I hope it is sucessful and causes no negative impact on its immediate neighbors.

I do however, question the garage... one of those electronic garages. The was one in Hoboken and when it broke down many cars were trapped for awhile and then the garage was inoperable for about a year, making the parking situation in that area a nightmare. That's my only pause for concern.

I didn't break down, there was a dispute of the software license and maintenance and it went to court.

The story made /.

If you all were on a board dedicated to building design we would still be staring at vinyl siding and abandon buildings.

I'm not saying the buildings are masterpieces but what are you really expecting? Not every building can be the 8th wonder of the world.

I think people are complaining because they are afraid of the changing landscape so hey take it out on things they have no control over.
