Don't forget that the 18% increase only refers to city taxes. This number does not include the increase in school taxs and the likely increase in county tax. Sucks to be a homeowner in a non-tax-abated property.

Let's not forget the much reduced "tax rebate checks" . In my case that was an 8% tax increase. I expect that "gift" from the governor will totally disappear now in light of the gov's latest "NJ is broke" speech which will translate into a 13% tax increase for me + these other increases mentioned on thread.

Just remember not to pick your nose or scratch your ass on the street and you will have nothing to worry about. There is no microphone so you can still fart all you want.

I don't see how these ratings relate to eating out in resturants. They are counting how many people got sick but they don't know where the contaminated food was eaten. Could be bad supermarkets, food processors or bad cooking/food storage habits at home.

Great idea Steve, Thank You! We never can have enough security. I wonder if there is a way, that when a call is made from one of these monitored buildings, the police could somehow dial into the cameras and better assess the situation before the patrolmen actually arrive. It might better prepare them for the situation they are responding to. It might be a valuable tool for the Fire Department as well.

The JCPD cameras are viewed in real time and probably have digital storage as well. I sometimes monitor the police frequencies and have heard first hand how efective they can be. When a call comes in, the people viewing the cameras will switch to the camera in that area and can keep a suspect in view and direct a car or officer to his exact location. Sometimes the bad guy travels out of range of the available cameras and is lost so the more cameras, the better.

Re: How much impact will "The" Golf Course have?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Seeing the words "impact" and "golf course" together reminds me of my first and only real golf experiance. There was, and may still be, a 9 hole chip and putt course down by Lincoln Park. We were in our late teens and always looking for "something to do" so my friend talks me into going down to play golf. I was not then, nor am I now, a golfer but I had seen the game played on TV so I knew exactly how it was done. I had the stance and the form down pretty well and also knew that my main objective in the game was to whack that ball off the rubber tee as hard as humanly possible just like the guys on TV. It was a beautiful shot, I felt like a regular Arnold Palmer. Unfortunately it was a bit off to the left, actually quite a bit off, but still it was a beautiful thing to watch. There is something hypnotic about watching a golfball soar, hang in the air, and make its return to earth. Did you know that when a golfball comes down on blacktop from a great height it will bounce perhaps 20-30 feet and continue to do so for quite a distance? This is especially true if it is bouncing off of a series vehicles moving at 60MPH. The ball was last seen moving south in the vicinity of the intersection of Rt 440 and Communipaw. Needless to say, we did not bother to retrieve it. Do over.

From reading the article, I gather we don't have a system. We are pumping JC poo to Passaic Valley Plant in Newark. Now we will also pump North Bergen poo there through our pipes. North Bergen could not afford to connect to Bergen County plant because they wanted too much $$. This is to be expected since Bergen County caters to a much higher class of poo.

That, or Ogden Ave will be waterfront property in 2100.

IT"S COMING! Between global warming, the inevitable tsunami and the hurricane, you nethercity dwellers don't have a chance. I would advise you to start buying rowboats, inner tubes and inflatable rafts NOW before it's too late. Oh, and get a copy of Waterworld and study it closely.

I don't know exactly how it is done but you might try the NY TV news WCBS, etc. They seem to be more than willing to cover JC lately. Might even like it as a tie in to the Gotti/Sliwa trial coverage and/or Times article.

Since were talkin Newark. Is this scary or what?
Newark police arrest teen accused of having Uzi near school
2/17/2006, 4:32 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Police arrested an 18-year-old high school graduate Friday morning, accusing him of carrying a loaded Uzi submachine gun near his alma mater.

Authorities said the arrest was made after a security guard at Weequahic High School notified a city police officer assigned to the school that a group of four teens may be armed with a gun. The police officer detained the teens as they walked through a nearby alley. He noticed a bulge in the jacket of one of the boys, Keith Canyon, who was arrested, officials said.

The weapon was hanging around Canyon's neck by a shoestring, police said.

Also another "argument" in Hoboken yesterday between teenagers. One dead, gun.

But these people have eyes. Unless they are buying sight unseen they will see the urban landscape. These people are not totally clueless, they were transfered here because they are smart people. As far as paying way too much, the prices are what they are and if the buyer is happy with the purchase then all is well and we have some new neighbors. Re Newark: I have been in areas of the northern part of the city that actually are suburban, really quite nice.

The contractor always pays for an officer on a construction detail. It's actually a good deal for the city because we get a free officer on the street. Even though they are off duty, they will respond to or call in any crime or trouble that comes to their attention. As far as using police vehicles, I doubt the city has any to spare for construction details but if it were necessary there is probably an extra charge to the contractor.

Re: Should Downtown Jersey City Secede?

I'm sure many of you know the history of JC. How downtown was the original JC then merged with Hudson City and some other areas then split up again then re-merged into what we know today. Where we really screwed ourselves was in splitting off from Bergen Co. They kept the name Bergen and we kept the urban headaches. Imagine what we could do with those Upper Saddle River/Alpine taxes today. Our past city/county fathers were such idiots. And then there's the story about NJ giving Staten Island to NY because they were intimidated. Those powdered wig, knee breech wearing wussies.

There are a few grand Victorians in the area on Summit. At the foot of Summit at Grand is an odd shaped building called Library Hall which was once JC City Hall. I would be on my guard walking around the area and don't go alone. Stay off Cornelison.

JC has tax problems because it's taxes are too low. Real estate should be reappraised more often at current values.

Police officers should also step up on enforcing illegally park vehicles throughout the city. Illegal parkers should be heavily fined and towed away.

Permits for parking should be much more expensive, and all parking lots in the city should charge $$ for parking, or heavily enforce short-term parking requirements.

The city could also get more tax dollars by allowing bars and clubs to stay open later. Relaxing the hours of operation would bring in more money, and more tax dollars.

We would all be so much happier then. Sigh.

Re: Those New construction 2 Families

Have you seen the boxes they built on Van Winkle? The block on the north side of White Castle between Tonnele Ave. and Blvd. PINK!, bright Pepto Bismal Pink brick. They chopped away at a huge outcropping of solid granite for 6 months, maybe longer. It must have cost a fortune to break out that rock and what for. Pepto Bismal pink crappy formula box houses. I could not believe my eyes when I finally saw what was going up there.
The box epidemic is escalating at an alarming rate. Saw 2 houses in the heights knocked down in 2 days.
Now there are several ways to look at this. Building identical houses is not a new idea, been done for 100 years. You will see blocks all over the county with identical houses. But why do these new boxes have to be so crappy looking? Because the builder doesn't care. He's a small time builder in it for the money. He has a formula that works for him. He doesn't have to think and neither do his crew. Do it the same way you did the last one and do it fast. For a few hundred dollars more, these houses could have some unique archetectural detail. Cornices, brackets, trim, gingerbread. All this stuff is available in molded foam and just has to be screwed on and it's very inexpensive. Just takes a little thought as to design. And don't get me started on the gaudy ironwork on the balconies of these craphouses. Basic problem; no pride in what they (contractors) do for a living.
