Re: Flooding in Jersey City

How's everyone been doing with these two recent storms? We suffered badly this time last year, but so far, so good with our new basement system. Be interested to hear if others are OK.

Thanks for posting this. I sat in this traffic this morning and it added an hour to my reverse commute. Today it was an accident, on one hand good (not just construction) if no one got hurt.

My husband and I have eaten there twice and really enjoyed it. It's very reasonable for the amount of food (don't assume that just cause it's 'tapas' style it means small plates). We actually found the bread very good, fresh and warm and perfect for dipping into the many sauces/broths that accompany the main plates. We're happy to have another good place to go to and can see ourselves eating there every 3 weeks or so.

Palisades Hospital in N. Bergen

We are researching hospitals and are undecided between this and Hoboken (which is a lot closer) for maternity care. Has anyone ever been to Palisades and how bad is the drive? River Road can be a bitch sometimes, so just wondering if anyone has any experience with trips there.

Does anyone who uses Dr. Brescia in Hoboken know if they do their own ultrasounds there in that office or if you have to go elsewhere? Thanks!

If someone told me, 'hey, sign this petition, but it may change,' then no, I wouldn't sign it. But I trusted that Telley wasn't going to switch, 'snow removal' to 'give up your first born.' I didn't mind the continuous edits to have it represent all of JC and not just downtown. But I think the immediate jumping on the person instead of constructive criticism was over the top.

Re: 3.75% water bill rate increase
Home away from home
Home away from home

All I'm suggesting is that, for me personally, the relative cost of water, even with the increase, is negligible relative to other monthly outgoing costs, including something as mundane as bottled water (which is often your tap water), which I've now cut from my expenses.

Not to sound like pollyanna, but given the number of people who don't have access to a municipal water supply service in the world, the extra few dollars going to United Water isn't something I'm going to be bothered by. Or if the increase for you is not negligible, invest in a refillable bottle, use a Brita filter, and every time you refill, drop a buck on your counter. I'm sure the savings will more than make up for the increase.

But that's just my 2 cents.

Before we pick on JC's municipal water supply, you may want to check out the movie Tapped, which goes into what a crime the bottled water industry is. I'd gladly pay a few more dollars to United Water than contribute to the Poland Springs/Pepsi/Coke shenanigans of bottled water.

Re: Satis Bistro -Cafe - Gelato in Paulus Hook

Home away from home

My husband and I went there on Sat; we needed to make reservations but they use OpenTable, which is good. We've been missing a great, continental-style sit-down, sorta-special occasion place since Ox's demise ... and Satis delivered. Food was really, really great; we sat downstairs and tables were a bit tight, but we didn't mind. Because of BYO, the meal was an incredible value for what we got (meat/cheese platter for app, two entrees, shared gelato sundae, coffees) for $88 (incl tip).

I wish it was a bit closer because the sandwiches/lunches look great. We'll definitely return in the Spring (it's about 30-min walk in the snow, which clearly is relentless for this winter :)

You're confusing locations and Asian countries... Ox is nearer to Grove St. The place with the wood/yellow stripes, which I don't think is hideous at all, is going to be Vietnamese sandwiches.

Ate there today - highly recommend. We split the whole Eli Manning; it had quality roast beef and was great. Awesome add to downtown and the fact that they deliver is great... if only Basic could learn some lessons for those of us in the HP area.

I've heard from someone who knows Michelle (of Skin Organix) well that she's coming back. She's going to be opening a similar store but with a different twist sometime early next year. I'm excited - I've missed the access to her products and her spa services.

Highly recommend Ellen, Secret Chef:

She did our wedding last November at the Loew's and it was great - she was organized and collaborative and the food was very good. The Loew's doesn't allow any open heat so she had to be creative with prep and keeping things warm and it worked out just fine.

For those of you who expressed lack of familiarity with the ongoing Embankment situation, here's a lengthier thread, which this one is beginning to be similar to:

Tern: It depends on if you are for demolishing or not. If not, it's a good thing...for now, until the hearings/debate over the Certificate of Appropriateness.

Corybraiterman: Deciphering through your post (sorry, I was distracted by 'point of you' instead of, what I assumed you meant, 'point of view').... you seem to project a future for the Embankment that's based on utopia and not reality, as if Hyman is a philanthropist and not a developer... And JC is a fair and balanced city...

If you review any of the posts here on taxes, developers, abatements (the list goes on...) you will see that your points are refuted by the 'simple thing' that JC government is corrupt: pure and simple. To think that Hyman will create a highline park... or that he will be taxed appropriately... or that the high rises will be zoned appropriately... gives a bit too much credit to our City, who looks for any opportunity to have a greased pocket.

One can only hope that the Board does the right thing with the next step, Certificate of Appropriateness.

And that, in a nutshell, is the main problem with the state of our city at this point in time. Crime is obviously a key issue, but the city's current infrastructure is an even more important issue. The administration has allowed (and fostered) the speedy development of the waterfront and other areas of the city, but we are not keeping up with the growth, and the impact can be seen everywhere. Our roads are in very poor condition, the PATH is usually stuffed during the rush hour commuting hours, countless water mains are breaking all over the place, the police force (as a ratio of beat officers to citizens) is getting smaller and smaller... If we continue down this path, the city will collapse under its own weight. And, what a shame... a more balanced approach to growth could, and should, yield better results for everyone. Instead, we are all getting the shaft by the effects of poor planning to maintain and grow the city's infrastructure.

This is exactly it - if you remove a huge watershed like the Embankment and replace with 1500 condo units that are now hooking into the decrepit sewer lines, that water has to go somewhere. And that somewhere is probably resident basements, once again. It's easy to be in favor of this when you don't lives anywhere near an area where the ramifications would be felt.

Yes the water has to go somewhere, that's why the civil engineers hired by the developer are required by law to design something to manage the stormwater, such as an underground detention basin. Your basement might flood but it will not flood because they put condos where the embankment is.

Right... required by 'law' in a city where it's the wild, wild west with developers.... With the poor infrastructure, sewers backing up into people's property, forgive my cynicism that any new development will be managed correctly and take all of this into account.

Three 400-unit high rises were part of Hyman's plan that he testified last month. So much for the unity you aspire to have...

This wealthy developer is arguing that he's had financial hardship and deserves a 12% return on his property. Many residents who testified last night wondered how they too could sign up for whatever he believes he's entitled to....

Last meeting tonight, everyone.

According to the Coalition, if Hyman is granted Certificates of Hardship, that will override any decision on Certificate of Appropriateness to demolish and result in the defacto granting of demolition permits. They believe the board will vote tonight! Please show your support!

It's absolutely asinine that they'll allow witnesses who have everything to gain by demolishing the Embankment testify yet people who may have given 10 bucks to support the coalition cannot. Please try and attend Mon and Tues if you can!

Why just 5th and 6th street - it's my understanding they want to put close to 1500 units, which would be the full space of the current embankment... This will affect anyone living near Hamilton Park, regardless if you're right on it.

Just got an alert email from Embankment Coalition about another meeting tonight at city hall @ 6. Does anyone know the details of this meeting vs. the others? We've gone to every one so far and weren't sure why this one may be more important than the others. Thanks.

I was instinctively disappointed until I read the last paragraph noting that the city needed to wait for this outcome to pursue eminent domain. If the decision was reverse, it seems it would be a lot harder to declare eminent domain. We need to do that already....
