Re: Favorite Portuguese restaurant for dinner in Newark?

My favorite is Iberia, about a 2 minute walk from the Newark PATH. Great rodizio and the mariscada is really good too. There are two locations; I slightly prefer the Iberia Peninsula over the Iberia Tavern, but they are supposedly identical in terms of food. The inside decor in the Peninsula is nicer than the Tavern though.

i've always considered taking that late nights from NYC into the heights, as it runs 24hrs on central ave when the commuter vans stop running. alas i've never actually gotten around to taking it.

almost any "general city-wide problem" will necessarily be a sound bite issue.

some issues that are prevalent but get lost in the shuffle:

- driveway permits / curb cutting (legalize it and tax it, or remove them from everyone in violation of the law)
- flooding during heavy rains, especially downtown

there is a little mexican taqueria on sip ave at romaine ave near journal square that just opened up about 2 months ago. $5.00 lunch special - 2 tacos and one of their homemade beverages. they give you plenty of limes and radishes to go with it and have a few different home made salsas there, including a green one.

also in bayonne there's a mexican deli/restaurant that serves great pork tacos. i believe it's around 38th st and on broadway.

i'm sure some of the ones in the heights are good too (cinco de mayo on thorne??) you just need to look around.

The one in Bayonne is El Aguila Dorada. I've been there a few times and the food and service is about 430 times better than Taqueria. Give or take

No way that Christie signs off on this. For someone who already is causing waves within his own party, signing off on what can essentially be interpreted as "new taxes" (by way of the fare hike) will be political suicide for his national political ambitions.

Also, don't feel the need to respond to "heights". His moniker is a disgrace to the neighborhood, and his posts are little more than a string of bigoted non sequiturs. I'm not totally convinced he's not just a typical online forum troll.

correct. The huge statues (bison? bears?) in the park are pretty iconic, at least in an unofficial way.

Yeah, a couple of relatives in the Heights got ticketed recently in similar situations (too close to the corner, etc.), when those were not regularly enforced in the past.

New Haven is still my archnemesis though...got hit with a ticket + tow + ticket + (almost towed again) in a 2 day span this year. F* that.

Probably the latter. Jersey City is small enough that people usually know enough about most neighborhoods and can comment on many of them.

Unless of course the city plans on crating them, force feeding them, and then selling their liver to off set the city budget.

That is the only reason the city should be involved with ducks!!

just kidding, I know it's the latter.

The alternative is to turn a blind eye to animal neglect / abuse on the part of the people who are assigned to protect them.

Jersey City really had no choice. UBS is already moving most of its operations out of Connecticut and back to New York after their favorable tax deal ended and the governor played hardball regarding a new deal, and this just took place about a month ago. JC would be crazy to allow UBS to leave at a time like this. Unfortunately, UBS had all the leverage in this case

I dutifully stopped on Grove at 8th for a woman with a stroller to cross. While she was in front of my minivan I saw in the mirror a car behind me swerve to my left without braking to pass me. I honked my horn in panic at the mother, fortunately she was cautious enough to take it slow and was not hit. We exchanged disgusted looks.

I was somewhat to the right, as I was turning. Lesson is: block the whole road when you stop for pedestrians or you'll be an accessory to murder.

Agreed. I've done this before too, but with a slightly different twist; one day I was driving southbound on Washington Blvd near Target, when I saw a family of ducks/geese (can't remember, but probably ducks) trying to cross the road. I slowed down and eventually stopped well short so that they could cross in front of me.

Mr. impatient BMW behind me could not wait (and in his defense, likely did not see the animals crossing), so he tried to pull out from behind me to pass me, and would have surely squashed a few of the babies in his haste.

Luckily I anticipated his action, moved my car over so he couldn't pass me, all the while he honked at me. Shortly after he saw the family crossing and stopped honking...probably felt like a D bag.

Re: Taqueria

Here's some honest questions for all you Taqueria lovers: if the "business model" is so good in Jersey City (i.e. pretentious / cheeky humor, no guac because it's not authentic, etc.), why is there a completely different model in NYC?

Could it be that the Jersey City location was merely nothing more than a market research ploy in order to see what works and what doesn't work in the NYC market? It's certainly possible, especially given the owner's most recent comments about the "class" of the clientele in Jersey City.

If this is indeed true (and this is nothing more than speculation at this point, but could wind up being true if Taqueria closes in the next ~3-6 months), would your viewpoint change at all? Or would it still be that great taco joint that "does so much for the neighborhood"?

Could this help explain to the naysayers (who have no idea how anyone could say anything bad about Taqueria) why a thread with 400 posts exists on the topic?

Well there you have it folks. The LES spot has learned from the constant mistakes of the JC spot. Guac + good customer service = an ok joint. Now the question is - will Taqueria fix all that's wrong at the JC spot? Will they continue to be d-bags (except the baby obviously); after all, why should lower class customers deserve the same kind of treatment as the high class NYC customers? Only time will tell.

I've been in JC over twenty years and have yet to see anything as toxic as the posts on here, but I've also learned that they mean next to nothing. People troll to troll. They have an inflated sense of self-importance due to how many times they post. (Woo-hoo?)

I've been going to Taqueria since it's opened. I've never had one bad experience with the service there. Some of the other customers, YES, but not the service. And I've never had one bad meal there.

When you're out and about in Jersey City, you get a true picture of the people and the businesses, something you don't get on here. I hope Taqueria is around for a long time--and I hope people make up their own minds about a place, before they take anything on here seriously.

I was in JC for over 25 years, and on this forum on and off for a number of years. People get riled up over things they don't like (especially loud noises, loud bars, Healy, etc. etc.), and are quick to make long-winded threads about it. The fact that Taqueria elicits such strong negative responses from people should serve as a warning flag that hey, maybe there's some truth in what people have to say about this place.
